I also see a lot of people saying that adding more rares would help new members, but thats simply false.
For rares to be rare, there has to be scarcity. The chance of getting the rare pet by adopting would still be very low, even for new members, but since they don't have years of fodder saved up, once they miss the rare pet (which most of them will) they will have to struggle to get that rare pet (more than old members with old pets to spare), and often even struggle to swap for that litters missed outcomes in general as most people will be seeking the rare pet too. Yeah, there will be a few newbies that get lucky on their first few adopts and end up with a rare, but its not like theyll have spares of it to trade off (again, scarcity), and while its true that not everyone has the completionist mindset and some newbies will trade their rares away, more newbies will miss them and struggle to get them through trades.
Like people have said before, events are a great way to stock up on rarer outcomes, as your gains are equal to the time you put in to checking back and grabbing that banner. It is fairly easy to end up with doubles if you have the time to spare (and most people do when the event lasts for a decent amount of time), and many of the pets are on the rarer side, which I think helps newbies so much more than introducing a fairly rare outcome often.
I do wish that cs would take steps to slow down the rate at which old (non store, at least) pets grow in rarity, though. Such as having more often/bigger amounts of re-releases. I've been on the site since 2010 and grew most of my collection through selling art, but even then I've never managed to catch up, and the peak rare pets will probably elude me forever which only discourages me from trying to get them. Even the ones I have gotten, such as skellebun, didn't feel worth it at the time of trading due to what I had to give up to get it, and I can only imagine its gotten exponentially worse since then. And to some extent, thats probably the case with most pre-09 pets. And I don't know if I'm in the minority there, but thats just not fun. When aspects of a game get so hard that the reward doesn't feel worth it, and you don't even want to Try to get there anymore, then its a massive loss for me. Introducing more rares (than the current rate) would only make that worse in my eyes.
*I also want to add that to me, CS has never been a trading game. The appeal has always been to adopt pets and watch them grow, along with collecting, sometimes hoarding, and participating in the events. Trading for missed outcomes feels more like a hassle than something I'm excited to do every month, Especially when I see the trade thread and everyone else is looking for the same pet that I need.*
