but to all, it is the fall of lightclan.

a generation before the cats of the present day, shadeclan ruled only over the northern half of the woods. the southern half was dominated by lightclan. the clans were in a constant state of warring, brought about by annual prey shortages and generations of territorial disputes.

the eminent leader of shadeclan, shrikestar, made a move to put a stop to the endless conflict once and for all. under her leadership, shadeclan launched a ruthless attack against lightclan, successfully wiping out majority of the populace. blood was shed without mercy, and without regard for the restrictions of the warrior code. shadeclan lay claim to the territory that once was lightclan's, and from the losses of their enemy the clan flourished. shrikestar is hailed a hero, and forever thrives in the memory of the living as the legend that made the forest whole as it was destined to be.

the few surviving stragglers of the fall fled further south to the nearby twoleg settlement, where they nursed their wounds and nurtured their righteous anger against their conquerors. today, unbeknownst to modern shadeclan, lightclan lives on in the descendants of those few survivors, and their desire for vengeance is fueled by the stories of savagery passed down by their elders.

life as the only clan in the forest has blessed shadeclan with many months of fruitful hunting and peaceful days. the only reminder of more violent times are bedtime tales told to sleepy kits about the great battle and the folk heroes that led shadeclan into victory. the cats of the town have observed that the forest residents are growing lazy and easygoing. border patrols are done more out of convention rather than necessity, allowing for outsiders to slip in and out of the territory undetected.

hatred and scorn can only stir and simmer for so long before they ignite into something much greater. the cats of the town have gathered into a group named the flames of retribution, or the retributionists, recruiting both clan descendants and local rogues alike. a new voice of command has risen among them, claiming direct lineage from brightstar himself, lightclan's last leader who gave his life to defend his clanmates against the attack. this figurehead is spearheading the movement to take back the forest and rebuild lightclan anew, only greater and stronger from having learned from the follies of the past.

only time will tell what will happen when their plans are set in motion.

clan naming system
the prefix of a cat is assigned when they are born. it reflects their pelt color for easy identification.
the suffix of a cat changes with time, via ceremony. kits get -kit, apprentices get -paw, and warriors receive a suffix that either represents a skill, represents personality, or is a descriptor suffix. leaders get the -star suffix.

refer to ailuronymy for prefix ideas, though you can be more flexible so long as the prefix is reasonable and represents a pelt color. the clan is set in britain, so any animal or plant must hail from there.

refer to ailuronymy for list of suffixes. skill suffixes are prioritized, if there isn't a suffix that matches a cat's skill set then personality suffixes get next priority, if none of the personality suffixes fit then the cat receives a descriptor suffix (-fur, -pelt, -stripe, -dapple for patched cats). the naming system only deviates if the cat makes a personal request for a particular suffix, or if a mentor deems one that fits them.

when a cat is born, they are given a birth name by their mother.
it is the choice of the cat to keep their birth name or not.

holidays
shadeclan has a tradition (called the snowmelt) that after the end of leafbare, on the first day of the snow melting and the newleaf beginning, they have a celebration as one clan. the leader commends everyone on their progress through the past year and addresses significant events, and makes a speech for the future of the clan. there is a lot of sharing tongues and bonding among members and overall a spirit of hopefulness and pride in their survival.

the holiday they celebrate from the passing of newleaf to greenleaf would be a bonding experience called the heartshare. cats will be grouped or paired together for heart-to-hearts with clan members they are not as close with and usually don't talk to, to create stronger bonds and understanding and camaraderie among the clan. tales are told by the best storytellers in the clan and everyone has a merry and entertaining time.

the holiday they celebrate from the passing of greenleaf to leaffall is the thanksgiving, starting with a prayer to starclan in thanks for the fruitful months and guidance for the new season. dead leaves are gathered and decorated all over the camp, also doubling as play things for the younger and energetic members of the clan. everyone in the clan then personally tells as many clanmates as possible how they are thankful for them and compliment them on their character and achievements.

the holiday they celebrate from the passing of leaffall to leafbare is more solemn. it is called the snowfall vigil. upon the first fall of snow in the forest, the medicine cat (accompanied by their apprentice if they have one) will travel to the moonfall, looking for omens sent by starclan for the future along the journey. when they reach the location by nightfall, they sleep and memorize and examine their dreams and interact within it (lucid dreaming) and receive guidance from their warrior ancestors, sometimes through literal manifestation of dead cats and what they have to say, or in the symbols and themes in the dreams. they do this for three days. afterwards, they take this knowledge back to the clan and announce the vision for the coming months. everyone stays awake for a silent vigil of prayer to protect them in the harshest season.

the flames of retribution


religion
the flames have idolized and placed on a pedestal lightclan's final leader to almost god-like status. they revere him for his bravery, courage, dignity, nobility, and drive to protect and serve his clan to the very end. he is a folk hero that everyone looks up to and have their values based on. disrespecting his name warrants punishment. he is referred to as saint brightstar. every day the flames have a morning prayer to praise brightstar and to ask for good luck and good hunting/foraging for the day.
