xx'xxThe nursery was bustling with conversation, all kits had different opinions on the rite of passage and only a select few would choose not to talk about it. Sweet nostalgia rose in his thoughts, he remembered being both excited and nervous for his trial. Once the time came he was carried out into the wilderness and left alone in the darkness of the cool night. His trial had been in the warmer season where the snow was shallow compared to what is was now. Goldenbark's thoughts were interrupted by a soft welcoming mewl. It was Twigheart, one of the queens, a very caring and devoted molly. He dipped his head towards her in response, then broke away from his comfortable position. As he looked around, he noticed Vinekit with his mother also giving him a warm welcome. He purred at the kit, he knew the small tom would do well in his trial as he reminded Goldenbark of himself. Rite of passage could be tricky and confusing since kits do not leave camp until they come of age, unless they break the rules, but Vinekit could handle himself well including his ability to pick up terrain quickly. More thoughts came into his mind.. Which kit would find him first? He wasn't the best at talking, and he worried that this would affect his mentoring skills. Sighing, he crept by the cats in the nursery heading towards the exit of the den, then ventured off to find something to do.[259]

xx'xxThe black and white molly had curled her fluffy tail around her beloved son, purring softly in her motherly tone. She understood his kind smile, reassuring her that he would be just fine during his rite. Sometimes she found herself thinking that Vinekit was more mature than his own mother, something that truly made her feel accomplished as a mother. Time crept on slowly, and Lilypond found herself looking back on when all of the kits were first born. New life, celebration of new offspring, tiny balls of fluff wiggling around the nursery. Then she began to think of Vinekits' father.. nobody knew of him, nobody had even questioned it during the time.. she was startled by Cloverfrost when she spoke. "Greetings Cloverfrost! We're doing lovely this morning, and you?" the molly replied with a purr. The white and brown tabby was doing well, she seemed very chipper when speaking to others. The conversation was nice, Cloverfrost was right when she said the den would be colder though. It made her a bit sad to imagine Vinekit not being right beside her most of the time, she adored the time they got to spend together. Most kits would be too focused on the rite to come visit, would Vinekit forget about her? Would he come to spend time with her after he became an apprentice? Ignoring the lonely feeling in her chest, she chuckled at Cloverfrosts words. Some kits would surely be disappointed after hearing the stories of fighting the lynx. Hopefully nothing would happen during the trials, a safe trip home was all she could ask for. Icicletooth greeted the group kindly, and she replied with a mewl before she left to visit her son.[286]

xx'xxHis ears swiveled towards his mentor approaching him. Where was he before, Silverpaw didn't see him a few moments ago, maybe his eyesight was tricking him? "Morning, Palenose." the young tom paused before speaking again, "Do you think they'll like me? What if someone gets hurt during the rite? Do you think I could go with you, maybe I can be helpful?" His mind raced with tons of different questions. He wanted to watch the kits become apprentices too, but he wasn't sure if he was allowed to. He was excited to finally get a new partner to play with and train with, but what if they really didn't like him? Would Palenose still be able to mentor him like he has been, or would things be different? His soft lead-grey eyes gazed up to the tom with curiosity. Silverpaw didn't understand everything all too well and impatiently waited for Palenose to answer, fiddling with the snow under his paws. [160]
