Velveteen ears swiveled in every direction as Gull listened for Semahj's movements. She felt his cold eyes skim her figure as she lie quietly, back toward him in defiance. Eventually she heard the King settle near the mouth of the den. Typical. He was blocking Gull's path while making it seem as though he was protecting his precious mate. The Queen sighed heavily and closed her heavy lids.
Gull's sleep was plagued by nightmares. Valerian appeared in many, though so did her precious Daniel. Semahj was in ever last one. Though it came as no surprise to the she-wolf. Semahj, after all was the reason her life went so awry. In many of them Valerian took Daniel and fled into the night. And even though Daniel was nearly grown, Gull still feared that Valerian would someday steal him from her.
But not all of her dreams were so awful. Some of them involved Lillith, her dear friend. Gull appreciated Lilliths trustworthiness, so naturally most of her dreams centered around Gull throwing her burdens onto the gentle wizard. Furthermore, some of her dreams featured Maddox. Those were Gull's favorite dreams. They all started the same; Maddox was ahead of the Queen, walking down an old path through the forest. One of many that the pack had permanently trampled down over the years. He was searching earnestly for herbs, while Gull was busy watching the birds and admiring the pretty, but medically useless, flowers. Abruptly Maddox stopped ahead of her and sighed. Gull could sense something heavy in the brute's tone. He always acted restless when there was something of importance he wished to share with the Queen. And every time Maddox acted that way, Gull became uneasy.
The Wizard waited on Gull to catch up, and he motioned with his cranium for her to sit beside him. Gull sat down, her eyes already full of tears for some unknown reason. Her voice cracked with fear and regret, What is it, dear Maddox? The Queen thought of a million things for him to say, and not a single one was good.
Maddox's maw opened slightly, revealing pointy canines, Gull, I've been waiting to say this for a long time and I-
Each time Gull would awaken disoriented, grey eyes searching the den for Maddox. Such earnest longing she had to know what he was about to say. But so sad to know it was all but a dream.
Gull twitched, tossed, and turned in her sleep. Not comfortable even for a second. Though the sun was not far away, and her Queenly duties awaited her, so Gull fought hard to find even an hour of precious rest.
