LAVANI
where: the forest, then the camp tagged: calynn

Green and white - flashing by in a blur. Curls of white leapt from the jaws of the predator. Thundering feet sounded the song of war.
Closer, closer still - the time was drawing near. Over a scatter of outcropping rocks the hunter leaped, jaws apart, claws ready. A
victorious rumble filled the air, but as it would seem, the chaser called its triumph too soon. A harty grunt floundered from Lavani
as she spilled over the ledge of the rocks. She managed to twist her shoulder prior to collapsing in a flailing heap, but it did little to
evade imminent disaster. Snorting, snarling, and grunting, Lavani skidded across a mossy patch, her catch - a hare - springing away
with its head high; Lavani hated rabbits, always so crude. Sighing, the silver she-wolf watched with loathing as the meant-to-be prey
hopped away without a worry in the world. She had half a mind to remain where she lay, but duty called. When duty called, one
did not get to revel in their woes. Another heavy sigh left her, before Lavani shook off her loss with a ruff of her flank, then carried
on her way. The pack would wake soon. She would want to hear what Calynn had to say when she greeted her sleepy family.
The walk, though short, was spent admiring the rising sun. She loved the morning - it held a certain aloofness that reminded her of a
tranquil time that come to pass long ago. She missed the days where it was easy; where she didn't have to worry about the members
of her pack - and what was inside of their hearts. She didn't want to imagine it - how someone she loved could be so cruel as to
murder one of their own. She took pride in the way she handled her job; she was to ensure the protection of her family. Lavani's ears
rolled to sit flat against her head. It seemed she had failed. With the death of the alpha, everything had changed. Tensions were
higher than she'd ever witnessed. She'd been with the pack since she'd dispersed from her parents years ago: not a single problem
had ever risen to challenge her - nothing like this, anyway. She wondered what would become of her friends - what she'd have to
do if - heaven forbid - she discovered the truth.
She had her theories - but none of them were kind. She scolded herself often for even considering such terrible things of the wolves
she'd come to love - but that was just it, wasn't it? Someone she loved had committed a terrible deed. Whoever they were, they would
have to face their consequences. She'd be sure they did, if it came to it.
Rounding the bend, Lavani pulled through a cluster of ferns, her eyes sweeping about the camp. Everyone seemed to remain asleep. Aside
from Calynn - whom had her head stuck in Brunhilda's den. She turned her head to the right, doing her best to catch the words her alpha
whispered to her packmate, but to no avail. Even her good ear was beginning to fail, it seemed. One day she'd fall prey to deafness.
She narrowed her eyes. Today was not that day.
She loped forward, anchored herself at the bass of the outcrop, digging her paws into the loose earth beneath it. She'd wait for Calynn
to finish her conversation. She sat, alert, intent to receive her orders for the brave, brand new day.
