lydia's mother had had enough of ghost's whimpering and had let the shar pei out. lydia had, of course, protested, but regina would have none of it. their yells made ghost confused, and when lydia finally told him to go outside for a bit—a command the loyal shar pei followed, despite his misgivings—the older woman closed the door behind him, which only made the poor creature more anxious.

his ears were down, tail tucked between his legs, and the whites of his eyes were showing clearly. he made a hurried, clumsy lope along the halls, wondering if there were monsters chasing after him. his overactive imagination made him run faster and faster until he nearly crashed into raven. ghost squeaked, whining, "don't hurt me, pleeeaaaase!"

the rottweiler snorted at blaze's reply. "yes, in fact, i do believe you are daft enough to throw yourself into the churning ocean and possibly drown," she countered lazily, lifting her head up high. if the female decided to attack, the rottweiler was sure she could hold against the kelpie. being a fighting dog in the past did help to resolve arguments.

              sometimes.

at another dog's voice, the rottie was quick to stand up and face juliet. nico didn't reply, but her eyes did catch sight of mika sitting some way off. like the dogo argentino, nico recognized mika as one who fought in the ring. she, however, was not interested in making friends and having a conversation, nor did she want to bring up the past, so the rottweiler just nodded in acknowledgement.

Fiona awoke to the sound of the ship creaking, her dark brown eyes drifting to one of her four humans. She typically slept in bed with the oldest pup of the couple, a young girl who they called "Effie". She was much calmer and quieter than the young pup, a little boy who they called "Finley". The small sheltie shifted slightly, giving Annie's face a few licks before leaping off the bed. She stumbled slightly as the floor shifted beneath her, a slight growl of irritation escaping from her throat. Despite her annoyance, she carefully walked on, stopping in front of the door. She looked over her shoulder, her hopeful eyes resting on the mate of her master, "Maisie".

Maisie caught Fiona's gaze, sighing as she stood up and walked over to the door. Fiona eagerly stood up, and calmly walked out the door once it was open. The female trotted elegantly along the halls, trying to keep her best balance even as the boat swayed. Honestly, she was starting to miss the thrill of keeping the sheep in their places, and she missed her conversations with the Old English Sheepdog, Donald; the dog who fought away any beast that dared come near the precious animals they were protecting. The humans didn't bring him on this trip, maybe because he was very uneasy around strangers, or maybe because they wanted him to stay to protect the sheep.

Ringo glanced over at his master and his apparent mate, huffing as he noted that the two were deeply distracted by each other. He trotted over to the door, clawing it loudly and obnoxious to catch their attention. The female groaned in annoyance, but his master stood up and opened the door for him. Wagging his curled tail in appreciation, the male strode out of the door, glancing around the halls as his owner closed to door behind him. The ship seemed gigantic, meaning plenty of places for the curious dog to explore. Smirking slightly, the Shiba Inu began to walk down the halls from his room, examining every spot so he can find his way back to his room later on.

GENDRY
male;; four years old;; tagged: no one
▂▂▂▂▂▂ ▂▂▂▂ ▂▂▂▂▂▂▂ ▂▂▂▂▂▂▂

The sea called to him from far below, the waves crashing against the sides of the over-sized vessel. Gendry stood poised on the wall keeping the living things aboard the ship from falling overboard. His eyes were cast down to the chaotic water while his owner stood behind him with drink in hand, her own gaze away from his pet. Soon, she would turn. Soon she would-

      Gendry, get down from there!

The dog heard her, but didn't turn. How bad would it be to jump down into that water? It was a good fall, but Gendry had learned that the landing into the liquid would be a soft one. He had four good legs for swimming and had gone swimming multiple times before this. It was one of his favorite tasks - his owner throwing the ball into a pond or lake and Gendry running to get it. Waves didn't bother him. This seemed to be his natural place, aboard this large ship. He felt the smallness of himself when he looked out at the never-ending sea of water.

Despite his growing thoughts to leave the ship behind and make out on his own in the sea, he turned and jumped down from the wall, moving to his owner who gave him a sharp scolding. It wouldn't matter, and they both knew it. He would most likely be on that wall again before the day ended. It was the only place he felt like the world was not weighing down at him, with the wind whipping his face and the salty sting of the water in his eyes. There was nothing but him and the open sea, and he had decided that it was as close as he'd get to flying.

None of these other dogs could say that. Half of them were scared of even being on the rocking ground. If they only knew what flying felt like. Then they wouldn't give him such strange glances when he was up there.

      "Lincoln, go play."

He had been waiting for these words for a few hours now. The doberman had so far refused to leave his owner's side. It was the first time they had been on a ship together, and Lincoln had slowly become certain that it was going to sink. Having decided this, he refused to leave Owen's side, facing the fact that soon he would be saving them both from the turgid sea. Unfortunately, his own was growing restless from the dog's watchful gaze. Lincoln was getting in the way, never straying inches from the man's legs. It was the fifth time he had attempted to get up and tripped over the large doberman's paws. It granted him the word go play.

Lincoln stood, wanting to obey Owen but already becoming somewhat stressed from the idea of leaving his side. A brief image of the man's water-logged body, carried off by the waves flashed through his mind, and a soft sigh escaped his lips. He would 'go play' but would make sure to keep on eye on his owner. He would be nearby if the ship decided to buck and sway more than it was already doing.

There were a number of dogs aboard the boat. Most Lincoln had avoided, as his only interest had been in his owner. Now he was faced with the decision of who to interact with. There was a large black female, looking thoroughly unimpressed. There was a brown and white male jumping down from the wall of the ship. Suddenly, a dog collided with the black female, and Lincoln shook his head. Moving forward stiffly, Lincoln continued his search for company that he didn't want.

brown orbs flickered up to the towering humans, examining their every move. it was them controlling the boat, or at least one of them. it would be a simple mistake made from one of them to send the whole boat crashing. these stressful thoughts occupied the mind of mika, and would not drift away.

    it couldn't be understood.

the fact that humans could ease the pain of a dog, or could take away all the stress. it was typical of her to think this way. after all, it was the homo sapiens that had forced her to fight for her life. this quickly lead to ignorance, and the dogo argentino assumed every human had about the same feelings as a rock, other than the lust for inflicting pain on others. these thoughts came rushing back to her after she met back with her fosters. no stress was reduced. none whatsoever.

there was a neutral feeling about the ride. somewhat calming, as if all thoughts were simply washed away. the way the waves lapped at the sides of the boat, and how the sea seemed never ending. this thought could be calming to some, or downright overwhelming for others.

once again leaving the human's sides, the "pit bull" made her way to the bow of the boat. she wanted to further analyze the rolling waves, this time from a closer view.

Just what in the world made her stupid human think that a trip on a flimsy, ungodly contraption over an endless pool of water would be just dandy? The Bernese mountain dog laid at the foot of her human's bed - a middle aged female by the name of 'Madeline.' Well, sometimes Scarlett heard her being called 'Maddy,' too, but the dog much preferred Madeline. The sound of the shower was all that could comfort Scarlett, and even that wasn't doing a good job. Her ears perked at Madeline's soft singing, which somewhat soothed Scarlett. Somewhat. "Why are humans so stupid?" Scarlett grumbled under her breath, rubbing her muzzle with a paw. "She wouldn't know if anything was wrong even if it smacked her across the face." For heaven's sake, the ship was rocking - and not in a good way. The unsteady rocking of the ship made Scarlett feel a bit queasy and brought on an ominous feeling. Were cruises always like this?

Scarlett lifted her head off of her paws when her human stepped out of the bathroom, her long, damp fur hanging heavily over her furless shoulders. "I don't feel good," she whined to her human, but of course Madeline did not understand and only gave her a comforting, sympathizing scratch behind the ear.

The human cooed some words at the dog before climbing on top of the bed to join Scarlett.

"Do you ever listen?" Scarlett snapped irritably. "This ship is a disaster waiting to happen! I can feel it, and I can also tell you one thing - I'm a heck of a lot smarter than you when it comes to this stuff!" Scarlett crawled up to Madeline, plopping her muzzle upon the human's lap. "I don't want to die," the mountain dog lamented a bit dramatically, "I've made too many accomplishments to have my life end now."

Madeline narrowed her eyes at Scarlett and raised a pink paw, jabbing a finger at the door.

"Are you kicking me out?" she cried indignantly. Her suspicion was confirmed when the female stood and shooed Scarlett off of the bed and door, slamming it shut behind her. "Sorry for helping," Scarlett barked. "I hope you know how to swim." Tail swishing angrily, Scarlett turned the other direction and padded down the hallway. In her cloud of thoughts, she hadn't noticed an approaching Doberman Pinscher and, consequently, collided with the other dog. "Hey, watch where you're going," the female growled immediately, backpedaling and rubbing her muzzle. Of course, she had quickly recognized that she was the one at fault, but the chances of her admitting that was nigh impossible.

Honestly, the whole prospect of this "ship ride" wasn't all too bad for Hotaru. For one, he never got seasick. In fact, as a pup, his humans had owned a little boat and would often taken him in the boat on a short trip. He had grown accustomed to the steady rocking motion of the ship, and of course, knew how to swim. The water was second nature to him. However, even he knew that the current swaying was not supposed to happen. He could feel it in his bones - something was wrong. But would his humans believe him? Definitely not. Hotaru had tried to warn them, had whimpered and pawed at his human's pants, but had been dismissed. So perhaps nothing was wrong? Obviously the people of this ship knew what they were doing. Perhaps Hotaru was simply a worrywart.

He strolled down the hallways, short claws clicking gently at the wooden floors, as the ship rocked to and fro. People passed by him in a hurry, but had not taken the time to notice Hotaru. After all, there were plenty of dogs on this ship. Hotaru hadn't met them, of course, because he simply wasn't the type to approach others. But he had noticed them earlier when boarding the ship. Eventually, the pale orange Akita reached the bottom of a steep staircase. A male human passed by him rather rudely, slightly shoving the male dog out of his way. Hotaru glared at the man's disappearing form.

Deciding for a change of scenery, Hotaru carefully climbed the staircase and onto the deck. The fog around them was light and he sighted the crystal blue, endless ocean that surrounded them. They were perhaps hundreds of miles away from any cities. Hotaru padded down the deck, sniffing the salty air. Seagulls cried from above, but other than that the ocean was completely quiet. A bit too quiet, in the male's honest opinion. It reminded him of the peace before a storm. As he neared the bow of the ship, Hotaru spotted a white dog staring at the waves, deep in thought. Curious, Hotaru quietly approached the female. "The ocean is pretty peaceful, isn't it?" he asked, voice quiet as to not startle the female.

She felt the presence of another dog, and then, as they bumped into her, she let out a throaty growl, glancing over at the dog who bumped into her. A male, and... she couldn't tell what breed he was, but he sure was skittish. Hm... "Look, I'm already sick, my body is retching, and I'm stiff as a board. I'd rather not tear you to pieces." Giving a grumble under her breath, she leaned towards the side, letting a small exit for him to pass her. The faes tail slashed over the moist wood, and she glanced at the rest of the dogs curiously. She wondered how they were tolerating it.

"If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong." She barked lightly, as her curved tail swung over her back, legs stiffening as she felt the boat rock again with another sickening creak. Bags legs stiffening sharply, she pressed her ears back for a moment, until the boat turned back the right way, and she was now pushing off from the rain, and planted her two front feet down on the ground. Stopping to shake out her short, rough coat, the female just noticed Juliette.
"Ah, I've seen worse. And not only on a boat. But... yeah, it is pretty rough."

ghost squeaked a wordless sound of understanding, rushing to get out of the scary-looking female. "i'm sorry, i'm sorry!" the flighty shar pei whimpered as he ran, bumping into several other dogs along the way. finally getting out onto the deck, ghost was surprised as a spray of seawater drenched his coat, immobilizing the dog for a moment. finally managing to snap out of it, he found that he was with two other dogs: a white female and an akita male. he whimpered out a shaky greeting, wondering whether they would hurt him or not.

ghost's reason for his skittishness was due to the beatings and abuse he received from his old owner, the one before lydia. ever since then, he had been cautious and terrified of anyone who weren't his owners. he tried to be nice, he tried to make friends, but his terror usually won in the end.

it didn't help that he was near water, which could drown him at any second.

nico rolled her eyes. she was getting bored of this conversation and was showing it. the rottweiler turned away and padded off, paws hitting heavily against the floor. other dogs were boring, boring, boring. she needed some company from someone who wasn't so boring.

or perhaps no company at all.

she was happily company-less as she wandered around, until she almost crashed into another dog. nico stepped back, somewhat surprised, before grumbling, "watch your step," to the male. it was her fault, really, but the prideful dog wouldn't admit that. no, she wouldn't.

the waves rolled repeatedly, blue-green tides shoving at the sides of the boat. yes, now they were shoving.
pushing at the ship. it wasn't a friendly tease, however, more of an intimidating threat. she was never one
to get seasick, but anxious? definitely. the worry was beginning to sting her again, and every blink was an
image of lives being ended. swallowed by the once beautiful sea.

she gazed once again out at the ocean, and once she had enough, her pupils directed themselves to the sky.
the clouds were lined in yellow and pink colors that beamed out of the sunlight. so much like the waves, the
clouds seemed to be alive, although moving gradually.

her thoughts were quickly interrupted as an akita approached from behind. she nodded at his words in agree-
ment. it surely was, despite also being intimidating. "It certainly is." she replied, turn-
ing to face him directly. a whimpering sound echoed in her ears, and as her gaze shifted, she saw a what seemed
to be frightened shar pei. mika tilted her head slightly, questioning him silently. what was the reason for such
panic? her looks were intimidating, sure, but mika didn't expect discrimination from her own species.

"Are you okay?" she asked the terrified dog.

Another dog who enjoyed being on a boat? That was a bit strange, considering how all the dogs he had met so far displayed nothing but anxiousness. This dogo argentino was a bit of an oddball, but then again Hotaru could be considered one too. He sat on his haunches, looking at the white, foamy waves that crashed at the boat's side. "The water does seem to be a little wild today, though," Hotaru said, deep in thought as he stared at the deep, endless blue ocean beneath him. The cold wind ruffled through his thick fur - and thanks to its thickness, he did not feel cold at all.

The Akita's thick, triangular ears pricked at the sound of incoming pawsteps. Whoever this approaching dog was, Hotaru could tell by his shaky, unsteady walk that he was as unstable as the water beneath them. Hotaru turned around at the sound of the dog's whimper; he sounded truly terrified, and Hotaru felt his heart drop with pity. "Not a big fan of water, I see," Hotaru noted, tipping his head to the side. The male's fear was understandable, for the waters underneath them was certainly unkind to those who have never experienced such treatment before. Even for Hotaru, who had been on many boats in his lifetime, found the waves to be ominous today.

      Watch your step.

The words came to Gendry's ears before he had realized anyone was beside him, let alone nearly running into him. Open your eyes, cur, were the words that very nearly spilled from his mouth before he turned his gaze to this female and saw just how big she was. A rottweiler, no doubt about that. Black and tan with muscles on top of muscles. The scars criss-crossing her body like paths on a map spoke of a life that Gendry would never know.

Sure, he had been in fights before, but never with teeth. The male was not a fighting dog, and knew when confrontations with others would lead to physical fights. He tried to stay away from those, the carefree male enjoying laughter more than the stressful snarls an opponent could bring forth. If he was going to get hurt, it would be due to his own recklessness. Not another dog's. So instead, he threw up a smile, perked his floppy ears, and clumsily side stepped around her large frame. "Let me get out of your way," he laughed as he once again jumped up on that partition between him and the sea. He danced along the short wall, still laughing as he gazed down at the large dog. If she decided he was worth attacking, she would take them both into the sea now.

Something bumped into his shoulder. In his effort to keep an eye on his owner, he hadn't noticed the large female barreling toward him at half speed. He did not notice her, in fact, until she was touching him, bumping him hard enough to back him up a few paces. There was a moment when the surprise of it made a snarl catch in his throat, when all he wanted to do was attack whoever was 'attacking' him. He was swung back into those days were it was fight or die, and this dog was his opponent. But Lincoln's mind worked far faster than his body, and he had assessed the danger of the situation before his fearful eyes even turned to her.

He was safe, on this rocking ship. He was here to protect his owner, not himself, and he would do that without question. This dog did not pose a threat to either of them, no matter her size (and she was large). Lincoln gingerly lowered his head in a slight bow. "I am sorry, Miss," he commented softly. "I did not see you there. It was my mistake." A quick glance back at Owen told him that his owner was still seated in a chair, drink in hand, and feet propped up on a nearby table. There was no danger here. Slowly, his heart beat returned to normal and the need to pin this dog vanished.

Lincoln remembered the vacant words of his own. Go play. Here was someone to 'play' with as he had suggested. Perhaps she could hold a halfway decent conversation, though the way they had started seemed to be leading to a tumultuous conversation. "It's a lovely day," he grinned, looking up at the sun which was lighting up his blue and tan fur, emphasizing the fact that Owen had bathed him just before they had boarded the ship. "I can't say I love the sea, but I'm slowly growing accustomed to it. Have you been having a good time, Miss?"
