poseidon had never been one for love. in fact, he hated
it absolutely! the god considered it petty and foolish, to
devote yourself to someone knowing they will leave you
in the end, whether by death, choice, or force. no body
can stay together forever, love eachother so completely.
in fact, he once had an argument with aphrodite over it.
he said that he would never fall in love, that he thought
being the goddess of it was something to be ashamed of.
aphrodite simply smiled and said, "we'll see about that."
a few days later, demeter came into poseidon's bedroom
at night. the goddess was like his sister; ever since she'd
lost persephone, she had been having awful night mares
that only poseidon could help with. but on that night all
he could think about was how beautiful the goddess was.
as demeter curled up in the crook of his arm, her perfect
face nestled in his side, poseidon could not help him self.
the words just fell out. "i think you're gorgeous," he said.
"and, forgive me for saying, but i think that i'm in love."
demeter looked up at him, still half asleep, and smiled.
"prove it," she whispered. "make me the most beautiful
animal the world has ever seen. if it measures up to my
standards, then i will love you." then she slipped out of
poseidon's bed and ran back to her bedroom, nightgown
slapping at her ankles as she went. he watched her go.
poseidon spent months perfecting the horse. and as the
god labored, demeter watched him from the shadows,
eager to see her gift. she knew it would not be perfect
enough for her – she didn't love poseidon, nor could she
ever – but she wished to see it all the same. watching
them both was aphrodite, smiling as she saw the fruits
of her labor. she would show poseidon the beautiful bit
of being in love . . . then she would show him the ugly.
true to her word, aphrodite relinquished her hold on the
god just as he finished creating the horse. they rode out
of the rolling waves, as beautiful and unique as demeter
had instructed. when she approached poseidon, smiling,
the god simply said, "don't bother. i changed my mind."
