- swindle pricked his ears, hearing a call in return, bit no others. he growled, biting a bone in half and finishing the marrow before burying his kill and romping away. he kept his tail high and his head held alert. he looked like a true beta of the pack, and through his small size and arrogantly playful nature, he was. the beta stopped and watched a herd of caribou. they were headed north, quickly and quietly, though there were some anxious brays as they spotted him. swindle lowered his tail and trotted around the group, head low. he was telling them he was no threat. the beta mind worked quickly. he gave a low whine and pawed the ground, scent marking it for good measure.
it was becoming winter soon, and there wouldn't be much to eat. apparently the caribou had decided it would be better to travel north and then cut through a pass to head down south. the brief but intense cold would be worth avoiding death. swindle knew if he didn't alert his pack, there wouldn't be food for winter. then again, most in his pack were shifters, and they could walk into the village for food. but the precious few wolves in his pack needed this, and so he perked up again, staring at the caribou.
the grey beta broke into a steady lope, circling the fearful herd and snapping at heels to keep them tight. he growled at an oncoming bold yearling, and it's resolve vanished. swindle kept at this, driving them against a wall cliff. he growled baring razor canines at them, before throwing back his head, lifting a paw and letting out a hunting howl. his pack would hear and come charging. they needed at least half these caribou, and he couldn't do it alone. another howl tore from his throat as he frantically snapped and laced at the angry caribou.
