- Copperstar sprawled out across the sandy floor of his den
while a large, lion-like yawn escaped through his maw. He
sat back on his haunches, satisfied with his stretch, and hastily
began grooming his tabby pelt with broad strokes of his rough,
pink tongue. Today was going to be a busy day, and, if he wanted
to get off to a good start, he would have to start the day earlier
than usual.
The sun was starting to rise above the horizon, and it was already
lighting the camp with all its golden glory. Copperstar padded out
into the clearing with brisk, enthusiastic strides, noticing he was
the first to wake. This would be a good opportunity to share his
meal with silence as he thought about today's plans.
The fresh-kill pile was noticeably small, but would supply most
of the clan for breakfast. Copperstar spotted a nice, plump vole
and picked it up with a swift motion of the jaws. Leaping upon
the Sandrock, Copperstar settled down on the warm stone to
enjoy his meal.
The first thing he would have to do is to organize the patrols for
the day. The dawn patrol would be led by Cloudpelt, and
Ravenfeather, Sootpaw, Yellowfern, and Wisppaw would join him.
The afternoon patrol would include Duskflower, himself,
Smallpaw, and Brookpaw and would be led by Lochfoot. The
apprentices also needed an assessment, and he planned on letting
them practice their hunting abilities, which would also take care
of the majority of the hunting for the day.
There was one more thing, though. He had to choose a deputy
before moonhigh, and he knew it was one of the most important
decisions a leader could make. He had a few cats in mind, but
today would be the day they would prove themselves worthy
of the position.
Copperstar looked up from his delectable meal long enough
to notice a petite she-cat had entered the clearing.
"Good morning, Copperstar," the medicine cat mewed with
a joyous ring to her voice.
"Hello, Moongazer," Copperstar replied as he observed the
medicine cat pick up a brown mouse and a large thrush from
the fresh-kill pile. She gave a small flick of the tail and
disappeared into her den.

- Moongazer hummed quietly to herself as she sorted through her
beloved herbs with graceful dexterity. Her duty as a medicine
cat was of great importance to her, and she was determined
to be prepared for any situation at any time of day. There
was no way she was ever going to fail her clan or the spirits
of her warrior ancestors.
Finished with her morning routine, Moongazer padded over
to her apprentice's side, a small sigh escaping her maw as she
watched Robinpaw's flank rise and fall in an endless rhythm.
She had such high hopes for the young one, but her blindness
was proving to be a challenge. However, Moongazer did know
one thing; the apprentice was a determined cat who wouldn't
let such a small hurdle keep her from her dream.
Suddenly, her thoughts were interrupted by a small rumble
coming from her stomach. Moongazer gave her chest fur a few
swift licks and padded out into the clearing.
"Good morning, Copperstar," Moongazer mewed in greeting to
the leader, dipping her head as a sign of respect, as she made her way
over to the fresh-kill pile.
"Hello, Moongazer," the tom replied with a twitch to the whiskers.
Moongazer removed a nice, plump mouse and a large thrush off of
the pile, careful not to puncture the delicate skin, and carried them
back to her den.
"Robinpaw," Moongazer mewed with a poetic voice, "wake up."
She prodded the apprentice with her nose and sat the mouse
beside her, hoping to tempt her with the smell.
Curling up into the soft moss of her bed, Moongazer began to eat
the thrush she had picked from the fresh-kill pile, while luxurious
purrs rumbled in her throat.
