Copperstar grinned micheviously at his taunting apprentice, "I was just giving you
a head start."

The large tom bounded after Smallpaw and out into the open forest. He gradually
slowed his pace the father they went, enjoying the warm rays of sun that peered
through the leaves of the trees above. As they approached a small clearing, the leader
stopped and turned to face his apprentice.

"The first thing to remember is that you always want to stay downwind of your prey; that
way you can creep up on it without it knowing of your presence. Of course, this is a given,
but it's important all the same." Copperstar meowed, beginning his lesson.

Dropping into a hunter's crouch, the tom continued, "Another basic of hunting is the hunter's
crouch. It can be easily well-executed if you follow three simple instructions. One, you should
always use your tail to your advantage. It will support you and keep you balanced. Two, you
should always have your stomach a few inches above the ground. This well enable you much
flexibility if you happen to pursue in a sudden chase. Three, you should always remain focused.
If you were to lose focus, your hunter's crouch would be incapable of supporting you in any way,
and, if that were to happen, it's almost guaranteed that your prey will detect your presence."

Copperstar stood up from his near-perfect hunter's crouch to look at his apprentice. "Demonstrate
a hunter's crouch for me, Smallpaw." the tom winked casually at his apprentice. He knew this would
be easy for him to accomplish, but the basics were mandatory for every hunting review.

Moongazer smiled warmly at the two apprentices, Sootpaw and Wisppaw, as they replied to her
greeting. They were rather blunt and straightforward about it, but she suspected the hunting
assessment occupied their thoughts at the moment.

Ravenfeather dipped his head at the medicine cat, and she nodded respectively in reply. Sitting
down with her tail curled neatly over her paws, Moongazer sat the beech leaves she had been
carrying gently on the ground. "I'm doing great," the she-cat replied cheerfully to the black warrior's
question, "How about you?" However, the tom continued without waiting for a reply, asking her if she
would like to join the patrol. "That would be wonderful," the medicine cat purred, "I just need to visit
the small stream just outside here for some marigold, and then to the Meadow for goldenrod."

"You know, I could always use some extra protection," Moongazer added, her whiskers twitching in quiet
laughter. She was more than capable of handling herself, but the stereotypical medicine cat was not.

"By the way," the she-cat mewed, scanning the forest around them, "Where is Cloudpelt?"

Robinpaw let out a soft, simple minded sigh as she entered camp with a rather large bundle of moss in her jaws; as well as some tucked under her chin the exact way her mentor had taught her. Her sightless eyes remained toward the ground as she dropped most of it off in the medicine cat den before taking the rest to the warriors den and settling amounts of the soft dry moss in nests that needed it. Although she looked busy with the moss, her mind was clouded with thoughts full of fear from the nightmares that haunted her whenever she slept.

"I must forget of these mere dreams... They are interfering with my work.. Yet, they seem so real, so dangerous.. Perhaps that is only because they are the few times I can actually see" she uttered softly to herself as she finished. Turning, she padded out of the sheltered, quiet den and returned to her own, picking up the moss and putting it away in the place where it was usually kept; which was towards the back of the den. The apprentice then let out a rather soft yawn, having had not slept for a few days. Shaking her head, she exited the den, passing by her own barely used nest

"I need to stay awake... I'm already useless enough without me sleeping away precious time that could be spent working..." she uttered sleepily, heading out of her den to try and find her mentor, or at least a bit of coltsfoot that the clan was in need of. Changing direction from her mentors scent which she had picked up the moment she left camp, she turned and went off toward the somewhat calm river to find the coltsfoot she was in need of.

As he settled himself, Ravenfeather kept an ear pricked to hear what the wise medicine cat was saying. He smiled, when she was done, and laid his tail across his wide black paws. His eyes glowed as he looked up at the apprentices, feeling an overwhelming sense of pride in them, both. "I'm fine, thank you for asking." He replied, enjoying the little talks he had with other cats. "A bit excited about the assessment, but apart from that, still my grumpy old self." Ravenfeather added, watching the young cats and feeling a sense of responsibility toward them. "They are clan, though." The tom murmured. Cloudpelt would be unhappy if I let anything happen to Wisppaw. he noted, silently. "I'm sure that Cloudpelt would love to bring you along. It would be our pleasure." The warrior spoke louder, to Moongazer, this time. "Oh, he's waking up Yellowfern. I brought these two here to get some more practice in. Though they don't seem to need it." he explained, watching them both with pride in his eyes. "They are both talented warriors and I'm proud to know them both. I'm sure Earthclan will be in good paws, even when we are gone." he chuckled.

Sootpaw nodded as he heard his mentor mention that the apprentices could start to practice, and his amber gaze went on to the tree. Sighing slightly to himself, the tabby apprentice padded forward, stopping at the base of the Grand Oak. Sootpaw watched as Wisppaw made her way up to the first branch, soon moving on to the second. Hesitating, Sootpaw unsheathed his claws and gripped the bark of the tree, slowly pulling himself upwards. Maybe I should just work on climbing the tree for now, rather than hunting. The light gray-furred apprentice thought. He could hear both Ravenfeather and Moongazer speaking below, though kept his glance on the tree so that he wouldn't lose his hold. When the first branch came into sight, Sootpaw reached for it with a paw, letting out a mew of surprise as he felt himself start to slide downwards. Panicking, Sootpaw tried to scramble back up the bark, and made a clumsy leap towards the branch. The branch swayed slightly before coming to rest, and Sootpaw sighed, glad that he hadn't fallen. The apprentice's eyes glanced up towards the second branch, as he waited a few moments before attempting to climb up the Grand Oak once more.

Moongazer's tailtip flicked back and forth as she listened intently to the warrior's words.
"Oh, yes," a smile crossing her maw as she looked up to observe the apprentices, "Sootpaw
and Wisppaw are sure to do well. They may even have a chance at earning warrior status
this go around."

She stood onto her paws, "Well, I'll be back soon to join you and the rest of the patrol. I need
to visit the stream as mentioned earlier. It shouldn't take very longer as it's not far from here."
The medicine cat bent her head to the ground to pick up the beech leaves she had laid there.
As she turned to go, she dipped her head respectively to the tom.

With a mouthful of leaves, she disappeared into the bushes and off towards the direction of the
small stream.

Smallpaw smiled as he saw his mentor race from the camp and out the entrance. he followed him until he came to a holt, tripping over a rock and falling onto his back. His eyes squinted and then Smallpaw got up, shaking out his fur to get rip of the miss and dirt in it. Smallpaw watched his mentor demonstrate a hunters crouch for him. Smallpaw rolled his eyes playfully, as to say 'I know how to do that'. As Copperstar finished and asked for Smallpaw to show him a crouch, Smallpaw smiled and got low. His belly was slightly on the ground, his tail was in the air. He looked over to his mentor, Like this? He asked Copperstar was a slight smile, hoping it was alright.

Copperstar watched as his apprentice slipped eagerly into a nearly perfect hunter's
crouch. Impressed, the tom lavishly praised the younger cat, "Wonderful! That was
close to absolute perfection."

He lifted his head high into the air as the smell of mouse flooded into his nostrils.
Perfect timing. the leader thought happily to himself. Turning away from his
apprentice, he whispered quietly, "Watch this." He slinked silently towards a pile of
leaves set near an elderly oak as he gently opened his maw to scent the air, hoping
to pinpoint the exact location of the creature. He crept closer and closer until the smell
became stronger. His tail swaying back and forth in anticipation, Copperstar lunged
forward, scooping up the mouse in one swift, fluid motion.

He padded over to his apprentice, dropping the bundle of fur at his paws. "Now you try,"
he meowed as he began to dig a hole to store the mouse until they could take it back to
the camp later.

Smallpaw grinned proudly with excitement. It was nce to get a comment on how he went, and his hunters crouch was near perfection. He smiled to himself, slipping out of the crouch and then watching his mentor. He looked at his mentor and nodded, watching his every move. Smallpaws ears twitched, how could Copperstar hear a mouse?! Smallpaw shook his head, it was near impossible. Then he watched as Copperstar brought back a mouse and berried it. Smallpaw nodded nervously, he couldny hear a thing. But then he remembered he had his nose. He scented the air, his head high. He smell a faint smell, and looked around, following it. As it got stronger, he stalked around, belly low to the ground.
With the scent strong now, he looked around to see a small mouse in the clearing, nibbling on a seed from the oak. He smirked, waiting for the mouse to turn. As it did, he leap from the bushes and swiftly moved his paw, but little did he know his foot was jammed. He tumbled out to the clearing, hearing the mouse. he sighed, he had let his mentor down. He started to walk, but felt something under his paw. He lifted it to see blood. He did it! But where was the mouse?
He stalked again, waiting for the mouses scent to return. He saw a small burrow, and figured it must be it. Smallpaw smiled and ponced on the hole, many mouse coming out at once. He looked at each one and claw at them all, not knowing what to do.

{{ Copperstar must have excellent hearing, because he hunted that mouse just by the sounds it made. Haha, I'm sorry about that. I've been reading the Guardians of Ga'Hoole books lately, which is about owls, and they hunt by sound instead of smell. As you can tell, it kind of messed my post up, but I fixed it. }}

Copperstar watched as the eager apprentice prowled over to the oak tree. He swiped
at a mouse, but missed it, scratching its shoulder instead. Copperstar was about to
speak as the mouse scampered away, frightened, but the young tom directed his
attention to a small burrow. He pounced onto the mound, mice flooding out if its
crushed opening. The cat began to claw at every mouse unfortunate enough to get
too close to his open limbs.

Copperstar hurried to the apprentice's side, silencing his actions by a swipe of the tail.
He looked down at the younger cat, disappointment flickering across his face. "A warrior
never kills more than he needs to," the leader explained, "He only hunts to survive."
The tom looked around at the fleeing rodents, shaking his head.

Smallpaw sighed, hanging his head low. he flattered his ears, knowing he had failed his mentor already. Smallpaw looked at the mice, some killed, most had run after, they may be killed from loss of blood. Smallpaw nodded slightly at his mentors wise words. Sorry Copperstar, I just- He said before he cut himself off. it would be best no to speak now. Smallpaw sighed to himself once more, looking around with sadness in his eyes. But he didn't want this to affect him in his assessment. Can I try once more, please? He pleaded to his mentor, looking up at him. His eyes almost looking those of a dog, large and sparkling. His tail flickered as he waited a reply from Copperstar.
