Rem
Open
Rem slowly opened his eyes as the summer sun began to peek over the horizon. He had spent the night in an old alley, behind a row of apartment building. The large dog sighed and heaved himself onto his feet, stretching as he stood. He knew he had to start his days off early now that it was the hot season, as it often became too hot for him during the daytime. Taking in a deep breath, he closed his eyes, concentrating on the scents around him. Like usual, the air was full of the musky scent of street rats, but there were none to be seen. As he walked down the alleyway, the mastiff would tear open any garbage bags the humans had left on the ground, searching each one for any edible scraps. Sustaining his massive body had proven to be a daunting task, and he was pretty much constantly searching for food.
The streets were empty when he reached them, just the occasional human hurrying to get back inside could be seen. Rem sighed and trotted down to the local park. There were usually at least some scraps of food from the humans. Plus, the trash cans were easily tipped over, to reveal even more human garbage. The wary dog would lift occasionally glance around, making sure no one was trying to sneak up to him as he rummaged.
Spencer
Open
As the first rays of sun hit him, Spencer yawned and blinked a few times when the bright light hit his face. Cautiously he lifted his head, careful not to wake the alley cat curled up on his tummy. Many dogs would find the act of even socializing with a cat distasteful, let alone sleeping with one. But, the large white dog was quite thankful for a snuggle buddy. His short hair didn't offer much protection from the night's chill. Spencer was actually fairly well acquainted with the stray cats of the city. Sometimes, during the winter, he would huddle up with four or five of them. They were thankful of not only the heat he also returned to them, but also for the protection he offered them from other stray dogs and other potentially dangerous animals, like raccoons.
Suddenly a howl broke the silence of the morning, sending the cat on Spencers stomach into a frenzy. Spencer yelped as it leaped off of him, leaving behind a few gashes from it's sharp claws. After thoroughly cleaning out the scratches the dog trotted off towards the howl he had heard before. It sounded quite close.
Soon Spencer stumbled upon exactly what he had hoped for. Not too far off, there was a large shepherd dog and an assortment of others gathered around him. As quietly as he could, the large dog crept over to the remaining shadows and positioned himself so, he hoped, the dogs wouldn't notice him. He peered over at them, trying to listen to their conversations, but he was just out of range and could only make out the occasional word or two.
