Oak, Bramble, Red, Pumpkin and Bird are in the forest, practising battle moves. They've just reached the clearing, and Pumpkin showed Bramble, Oak and Bird the back-kick. Oak and Bird have just tried it, whilst Red sits in the corner and watches

Voe is in the camp, she is worried about Oak's safety whilst training

Was that jealously she felt as she watched Oak and Bird constantly talk to each other? The strange feeling was rising up inside her, bubbling ferociously and causing her to narrow her evergreen eyes. The apprentice gave herself a rough shake. It made sense for them to be friends; after all, they were much closer in age, with only two moons between them. She herself was six moons older than Oak; she could remember sitting in the nursery in her last few days before her ceremony and seeing Voe laying in her nest in the milk-scented den with her bulging belly. Pushing the feeling away, the she-cat turned to watch Red and Pumpkin as they demonstrated the back kick; a simple move, easily executed. Bramble had learnt it moons ago, but it never hurt to go back to the basics and refine your skills. Kneading her paws for a few moments, the bicolour glanced around the clearing until she spotted a brittle branch that looked like it had fallen moons ago, possibly in a storm. What better way to test the strength in your hind legs than that?

Bounding over, Bramble turned so the tip of her tail almost draped around the branch and thrust her weight onto her forepaws. Her hind legs kicked out strongly, and her claws unsheathed with the movement. It was as if the branch had transformed into an enemy. As her pads hit the branch, her claws scored through the rotting bark and the strength in her hind legs caused a crack to ring sharply through the air. Within moments the move was over and Bramble stood with all four paws on the ground and the branch snapped in two behind her. If that had been a cat, she thought, that would have inflicted serious wounds.

The crack made Oak wince, flinching back at the sudden noise. His heart hammered in his chest, and it took him a brief moment to check that all was fine, that no cat had broken their back, like he'd originally feared.
Glancing around, he saw Bramble by the broken branch. He saw the bark laying on the ground, and the she-cat looking back at it. Surprise and thrill rushed into his heart. "Wow!" he cried, running over and patting the branch with his tabby-striped front paw. "That was brilliant, Bramble!" He gazed up at her with shining amber eyes; there was a strange sense of pride as he spoke to the older cat. This is, after all, technically my Clan. And I have cats as good at fighting as Bramble! He playfully nudged the apprentice, laughing. "I thought you couldn't do battle moves, huh?" he challenged.
