The large tom stopped as his apprentice tried to get his attention. He turned to glance in the direction her ears had signaled in and then nodded upon seeing the mouse. He sat and wrapped his tail over his paws, dipping his head to her to instruct that she try alone. He too tested the air and detected that it was blowing toward Softpaw. He had smiled, but then sighed when the shift in direction gave her away and deprived her of her kill. He stood and padded toward her, nodding. "You had good technique, but sometimes, that isn't enough." he told her, starting toward the scent of another mouse he had picked up. "Luck is not always on our side." He had no doubt the apprentice knew that, but it was important that she know how much of a factor luck really played in what warriors did. Oftentimes, the cat without as much skill as another will catch more prey. There was much that was left up to luck. "Let's try another." Crookedheart flashed her a smile, hoping she wouldn't have been disheartened by the mouse that got away.

Listening as intently as he could to the senior warrior's words, Smokepaw nodded and then cocked his head. "Ah. That was difficult for me to conquer, too." he admitted. "Being that I can't hear well, I didn't really know how much noise I was making. Recently, Snowdrift says I've gotten better, though." Smiling softly, he then nodded. "Our training has been going well, I'd say. I feel confident that I have retained most of what she's taught me. She's been a great mentor to me." And she really had been. Smokepaw was glad they'd been assigned to one another. At first, he had felt she was too lenient, but she had proved him wrong. Any apprentices she got later on in her life would be lucky to have her as a mentor.
