Cassius' ears pricked up as Rogue spoke, to indicate that he was listening, but when she was finished, he pinned them back again. He felt hopeless and depressed, and his situation would never change. The white canine walked back down the trail he had walked up to sit by the pond, but he had to stop because a cart was being pulled across the path in front of him. The cart was being pulled along by a Bernese mountain dog, and sitting in the cart were a mother red fox and her two cubs. Cassius smiled and wagged his tail in a friendly manner, keeping his white ears pinned back. The cubs were too cute to ignore. One of the two cubs reached out with a tiny red paw to wave at Cassius, and Cassius took a step towards the slow moving cart.
"Ryan! What are you doing?! That's the evil hybrid I was telling you about!" The mother fox suddenly bleated, pulling her now terrified cub away from the side of the cart.
Cassius pricked one ear up at this sudden burst of anger from the fox, and he took a step back. "My apologies, ma'am. I'll be on my way now." He apologised rather sadly, lowering his head and stepping away. However his submissive posture was mistaken for an aggressive one.
The mother fox suddenly made a loud screeching noise and pulled her cubs closer to her. "Help! Help! He's going to attack me! Help!" She wailed, leaning forwards towards the cart driver. The cart suddenly sped off down the path at top speed, dirt flying from the wooden wheels, with a screeching red fox and her crying cubs.
Cassius just stood there, speechless.
