for as long as anyone can remember, the fenrir family bloodline has alway
s sat comfortably in their castle. with a substantial amount of wealth and
healthy soldiers spilling from every inch of the kingdom, the thought of th
e years-long peace ending has never crossed their mind. the rich thrive of
f the efforts of the less fortunate, the royal guards swat away any waft of
rebellion, and each string is pulled just how it should be to keep the uppe
r class happy. this is how it's always been, and how it will always be. ───
within the deep reaches of the land , far from the clutches of soldiers and
law, resides a ragtag group. all young and bright-eyed, trained to fend for
themselves with quick wit and sharp tongues and sharper blades. the grou
p does what they must, be it thievery and trickery or honing skills to live o
ff the land. the messy family will take in any misfit that stumbles across t
heir path. they throw away their birth names and take on those of creatur
es, accepting that they are no longer those who feed the mouths of royals.
─── fall brings on the cold days and early nights. with the forest freezing
over and supplies running low, the creatures are pressed to steal from the
castle's supply carts. it seems they've bitten off a bit more than they can
chew as wanted posters appear around neighboring towns and whispers of
rewards for thieves bubble within the taverns. patrols spot the smoke of s
oldier's camps in the late hours, suggesting potential search parties for th
e group of criminals. the pressure leads to them hopping frequently betw
een four of their hidden bases in hopes of fenrir's men not finding their tr
ail. the children are being taught to fight and the older members are adv
ised to train daily in preparation for any combat. the tension of potential
capture and the coming snow leaves the small family with dwindling hope,
an escapee of the royal family is found, a newcomer brings distrust, and a
valued member of the gang is swept away and presumed dead. ──────

────fox had tried, when he was young and considerably more stupid, to catch a fish with his bare hands. for what felt like hours he'd sit quietly in the river and try to snatch up the silver creatures that shimmered past. the only time he ever got a hold was on the tail. the thing was more slippery than the devil. in an instant it thrashed out of his fingers and he was sent tumbling into the current, at which point he nearly drowned and barely managed to splash back to shore in a heaving mess.

this felt like trying to hold that blasted fish. every time he yanked the rain-slicked tent, fabric bundled in white-knuckled fists, the wind yanked back twice as hard as if it wanted to take his fingers along with it. the man was a soaked mess by the time he had the rope in his hands, trying vainly to hammer a stake into the muddied ground before the howling draft could catch under the opening and billow the cursed thing back up again. freezing hands and the shroud of night gave no leniency. his clothing wasn't made for this weather - as soon as the storm started he was busy moving things to shelter, be it under one of the tents or tucked into a tree's roots, and changing had been the last thing on his mind. he was cold and angry and blinking water from his eyes as it came down as if the gods had opened up the skies and let the falls of the heavens come through.

he wished he could catch a break.

'never', said the gods. a clap of thunder rolled out from behind him, deafening over the fall of the rain. it rumbled with a force that shook his chest, violent and powerful and everything he hated, and sent his mind into a temporary panic. if the world hadn't have stayed blanketed in black he would've thought lightning had struck the ground he stood on. in his moment of fear the rope had slipped, and the tent was sent barreling into the trees around camp.

fox let out a cry of a defeated man and stood, throwing his hands up in disbelief. every limb creaked with exhaustion from wrestling the storm, and every inch of skin burned with the chill of the winter rain. he looked to the silhouette of mouse, now visible with the tent no longer between them.

"you had one job!" he had to yell over the gale beating on his ears and the roar of the shower. "hold the tent! just hold the tent, mouse!" he gestured to the crumpled bundle that now clung to the forest's lining. "damned trees can hold it better than you!" the wind whipped wet strands of hair around his face, stinging wherever they landed. he shook his head and sent a halo of droplets into the night air. the past few hours had been frustrating, and as much as it wasn't mouse's fault, his temper would tell him so.

fox reached up and grabbed at his black locks, giving them a tight and aggravated tug. bear was busy trying to scrounge up a cold dinner without a fire, though his strength would be much appreciated at the time. feeding the little ones was a priority. owl was likely trying to stop her tree house from tumbling down. everyone was busy preventing things from being destroyed by the downpour or protecting the youngins from freezing.

he whipped his head around and squinted through the sheets, singling in on the first person he saw. "mustang, get over here." fox called to the man, giving a sharp beckon with his hand. the man was tall and strong and could help the two with getting this thing into the ground - all else fails, the cooking tent would have to stay wrapped up for the night.

It was no surprise that on the day Ram woke up with a killer headache, the Gods above had similar plans for the weather. Usually, Ram enjoyed a good rainstorm. It suited her mood, and the way the aggressive, seething raindrops dove into the wet soil like a hawk with a small rodent was always a pleasing sight for her. Soothing to the mind, it was, as well as an oddly motivational sight to get up and going. Today, however, she was miserable. Woke up miserable; started the day miserable; continued about, well, miserable. She was the type of person to consider the entire day an utter disaster if something went wrong, regardless of what it was. Yes, consider her whiny, or dramatic, or a bit hopeless, but to Ram, it all made sense. Bad headache? Bad day. Usually, it was a challenge to change the mindset the young woman had settled on. A stubborn one, she was, and it took a whole lot of convincing for her to swap her mood around. It had been tried before, by both her old family and her current one. While Ram hadn't ever physically bitten a finger off, the looks she often shot said speakers were likely just as painful. Or so she hoped, anyway. Only on her bad days, though; Ram wouldn't consider herself that cruel. Just a bit... edgy. There was a difference, and she hadn't an issue clarifying such a thing if anyone were to ever question it.

But a session of question and answers wasn't quite something officially written out on Ram's agenda. In her opinion, she didn't have time for that. So, while she liked stating her point, determined to make it agreeable and so forth, it was more of a last-case scenario type of situation. They'd figure out eventually, whomever "they" qualified to be. That was another thing that drizzled on her mood; unnecessarily spelling out everything for those who were a bit duller in the mind. Just get smarter and figure it out yourself.

Today, however, things were looking a lot brighter on the mood swap.

She wouldn't go as far as saying she was downright pleased about the heavy rainfall, for she really wasn't; between the near-tumble she had taken down the slippery hill this morning, and the booming inside her tense skull every time lightning crackled or thunder hollered, it was far from a good, dreary weather day. But what was unfolding before her very eyes was a sight to see. The wink of bright light in the midst of these dreary times: her struggling campmates.

Ram wouldn't consider herself a lazy being. In fact, she thoroughly enjoyed keeping herself preoccupied; it was better than sitting around, stirring up a boring conversation about who-knows-what. But for the time being, the raven-haired woman felt very little need to get up and rush over to the small cluster of people she had learned to call her family. It was quite an adventure, watching their desperate hands claw at the slimy-looking sides of the tent. Fox looked as though he was losing his mind, scampering about with far more energy than what Ram could even dream of mustering up at that moment. The rollercoaster of frustrated groans every time even an inch of the tent caved in was a whole movie for Ram, and with the raindrops skimming her lashes, creating a blurred effect every-now-and-then, it was almost a ten out of ten rating.

It was evident there were only a few campers helping with the disaster, though. Perking up the way Hound always did whenever he caught a promising scent during a hunting trip, Ram turned her head to gaze off in another direction. Ah, yes. Moose. It wasn't at all a surprise to find Moose resting peacefully by the bubbling river, as opposed to offering his two hands in a job that was sinking by the second. Ram really couldn't say much; she wasn't doing much better. Still, though, she always found the sight oddly amusing, though she could never quite place a finger on what exactly it was that tickled her senses. Lifting her hand, she offered him a somewhat lazy wave, unsure if he would actually see it or not, then returned her attention onto the somewhat-collapsed tent, drawing a knee up to her chest. She knew it would only be a matter of time before she got roped into helping. For now, though, Ram was most content sitting from the side, soaked to the bone in rain, watching the others figure out the unsettling problem in front of them.

raccoon had slept well the night before, though not for long, which wasn’t all that uncommon. she couldn’t help her internal clock, forever tracking the rise and fall of the moon in the sky and dragging her along with it. despite the few hours she managed every night, the brunette was brimming with energy every day, to be used for productive means or wasted on silly pranks and jaunts down to the nearby river to search for shiny things and knick-knacks to bring back to her friends. she’d had no dreams the night before, simply blinking in and out of the unconscious world without really getting any purchase on the paths she saw stretched out before her. it wasn’t concerning - there was no reason for her to be chasing after the advice of the old ones as of late. they were settled in well into their current camp, there weren’t any parties coming up that she needed to attend yet - always yet - and the worst thing that had happened to them thus far was someone’s tent falling in on itself during the process of setting up. the brunette snorted at the mental image that graced her at that recollection, muffled shouts and the crashing of wooden poles against one another as bear shuffled about in concern.
xxx
speaking of bear, she was honestly surprised at how well he was managing dinner considering the raging storm that had doused their fire and whipped their camp into a disorganized frenzy. of course his culinary expertise far outran her own, and he was a very resourceful man, but the brunette had honestly expected him to struggle - at least a little bit. fox, on the other hand, certainly was. attempting to wrangle a tent that wished to be free was no easy job, especially when one's helper seemed more interested in standing to the side than really doing too much. not that raccoon was helping in that department either, but she liked to think that she was doing something to support the group. handing out damp sandwiches and hunks of bread with divots filled with cheese and butter to the young ones was no easy task, oh yes, and those who had no free hands with which to accept the food needed raccoon to hold onto their share until they did. she knew better than to nibble on their portions, wrapping them instead in scraps of linen she had found in one of her boxes before tucking them into the pockets of her skirt for later. she was lucky that they had managed to mostly waterproof their tents with beeswax at one point - though she couldn't quite recall when - and many of her things had been saved from the damp. she hoped that the layering in her skirt (which was far less waterproof) would be enough protection, considering her outfit wasn't one meant to keep the rain off her skin.
xxx
the young woman had never been one to reject nature's gifts, no matter if others saw them as harmful or an annoyance. the old gods were generous, even as they sent thunder and great branches of hot light through the sky. now they had rain water filling their many empty buckets, and they wouldn't need to make visits to nearby villages to use their wells for many days. of course the nearby river was also a source, but to raccoon it was best to take straight from the sky. there were no negative energies or unkind spirits lurking in the skies, only the clouds from which the rain came. she enjoyed feeling the spattering of raindrops on her skin, cleaning her of anything bad stuck to her soul, and the souls of her family. as she finally grabbed the last two portions she would need from bear - giving a smile and words of thanks as she always did - raccoon turned and began making her way through the wet grass and mud.
xxx
the ground beneath her bare feet was still warm from the sunny morning, but was rapidly growing colder as it was exposed to the wind, rain and growing dark, and she shifted her weight occasionally to dig one heel deeper into the soft earth, then the next. the brunette wasn't one to be afraid of a little mud between her toes or on the hem of her skirts and dresses - it easily washed out anyway. there was something that fascinated raccoon about the way the dirt blended into the blue of the skirt she wore now, and with any of the other colors she frequented, and she saw a chance to experience that again as a plus. the ground was less solid as the young woman made her way to the banks of the river swollen with new depths, and she stepped softer as to not slip. her pace was still quick, raccoon always moving as though she was late to an event no one else knew she had to go to, but she did her best to be careful of where she stepped. it wouldn't do to slip now, as she squinted against the rain blowing in her face, when she still had one last meal to deliver and one to enjoy her self. raccoon wasn't sure how long moose had been sitting beneath the tree he was at the base of now, but she knew he had yet to receive any sort of dinner. nothing ever missed the brunette's sharp gaze, and her best friend had not been among the small group that had pressed against bear and herself to try to get to the food before it was soaked through.
xxx
"move over, you're taking up all the tree-coverage. i brought you dinner, i don't know if you heard the bell - though to be fair i rang it two seconds before a thunderclap, so i understand if you didn't hear it. it was either sandwich or a roll with cheese and butter and i want the roll, so i hope you like wet roast." raccoon chattered away as she slumped down onto the wet earth next to moose, squishing herself against his side in an attempt to soak up what little warmth the equally wet man had to offer. despite her lack of complaints, the season was steadily changing from autumn to winter, and she wasn't exactly dressed accordingly. "i didn't have a chance to wrap these ones in fabric scraps, so they're gonna be really squishy." once she was settled in as best she could, the brunette wasted no time stuffing the bread chunk at a time into her mouth, not bothering to try and talk around it. she knew better than to risk anything falling out - they were a large group and it wouldn't do to waste food that was harder to come by as days grew shorter and colder.

24 // he/him // the camp // tagged: fox, mustang // mentioned: raccoon

Mouse liked to act like he was stronger than he was. When carrying things around, he'd always lift a little more than he was actually comfortable taking. When moving to a new camp, he'd always push himself a little bit too far, until his legs were aching. In combat, he'd always pick up a club or a staff - some blunt weapon that needed a lot of heft to really pack a punch, and he'd go until his arms were aching. But there was always a moment - as he picked up the crates, or took the first step of his journey, or cut down a guardsman with a satisfying thunk, when Mouse could almost convince himself he was that strong. He'd feel powerful, like nothing in the world could stop him.

He did not feel like that now.

The wind was battering him from what felt like all angles. His clothes were sticking to his skin, his jumper feeling itchy and heavy on his shoulders. His jaw was clenched in frustration as he fought with the slippery, heavy swathes of fabric that used to make up a tent. It was just barely still standing, its flaps swinging in the wind and threatening to lift Mouse up off his feet altogether. No, Mouse did not feel powerful. In fact, he felt very small and damp and tired and frustrated. 'Like a drowned rat...' the turn of phrase came to mind, and any other time it might have made Mouse laugh. But not right now. Right now he was much too busy glaring daggers at the flailing tent, as if it would somehow help to wrangle it into submission. It did not - if anything the wind just picked up, and the vague grip he'd managed to get on the tent began to slip from his grasp. Distantly, he remembered Raccoon saying that rain was a gift from the Gods, that they should be grateful for it. He silently cursed their Gods. As far as he was concerned, they could keep their gifts.

The crash of thunder that sounded was enough to make Mouse jump. It sounded like it was right above their heads now, and Mouse could feel the deep reverberation of it in his bones. It seemed almost like an invocation, as as soon as it rang out, the wind picked up with a newfound determination, and ripped the sodden sheets of canvas from Mouse's hands, the tent finally giving in as it crumbled to the ground in a pathetic heap. Mouse swore loudly - likely loud enough to be heard over the pealing rain. But chances are anyone who cared was much too busy with their own things to worry about his language. He looked up to where Fox stood - somehow, he looked as bad as Mouse felt. Rain was dripping from his nose, his hair was sticking to his face. But that wouldn't mean Mouse would go easy on him.

"Oh me? I was meant to hold it huh? I thought this was a team effort, Fox!" he snapped back with a glare. "If you hadn't wussed out at the sound of a little thunder, we'd be doing just fine! But sure, blame me why don't you!"

Without the strain on his muscles, Mouse was really feeling the chill now. The hood of his jacket had long blown off in the wind, and his normally curly hair was plastered to his head in soggy strands. He couldn't even bring himself to kneel down and try again with the tent, at least not yet. The whole exercise felt futile. Why had he been roped into this? Looking around, he could see a lot of the creatures were just milling around, not doing much of anything. The temptation to simply give up and join them was immense, but he couldn't shake the hopeful look on Bear's face when he'd asked Mouse to help Fox with getting the tents in order. No, he'd see this through, no matter how infuriating Fox was being.

He snapped back to the present as Fox shouted for Mustang. He couldn't help but roll his eyes - it wasn't that Mustang wasn't helpful, but he couldn't help but feel like another set of hands would just be futile. He didn't voice the thought yet though, instead throwing Fox one last glare before getting to his knees in the muddy earth, and trying to find purchase on the fallen tent so they could work at getting it standing again.

      ██xxisadora barnes . twenty-three . she/they . at her treehouse . mentioned; fox and mouse

owl, though she liked being active, also loved her sleep. dreams were her means of escaping the real world, and they were almost always wild and amazing. she would dream about living freely in a log cabin, in the middle of the forest- and she wouldn't be alone. the other creatures were always with her in these dreams, and whenever she'd wake up she'd be so disappointed that their lives were not as they were made to be in her mind during her sleeping hours. all she wanted was for them all to be free and without anyone - especially the children - to grow up without feeling like they were in danger.

owl had woken up to the sounds of heavy rain, rumbling thunder and her little makeshift curtains ripping from their wooden bar and falling onto her face. the fabric was completely soaked through, and water began practically flooding her treehouse quickly. the woman immediately jumped up and tried to block her two windows with anything she could- including her bookshelves. still in a loose shirt, a pair of long, baggy culottes and bare feet, owl was absolutely freezing and desperately trying to keep her little home together, dry and warm. her efforts, however, seemed to be quite useless, and she could see the other creatures

after what seemed like hours of trying to keep herself and her home together, quite a few wooden planks from her walls broke off and she just decided to run and help the others - she could sort her own place out afterwards, but in that moment, all she could think of was the children who would be soaking wet and freezing to death. so owl climbed quickly down her ladder and ran over to fox and mouse to help with the tent that they were very clearly struggling with. her hair was up in a tight, crazy-looking bun and her clothes were blowing drastically in the wind; "i can help too!" she shouted to them as she started to frantically grab and tug at the tent strings and fabric.
