and hardware shop or the
incomparable Buckley's
Butcher and Deli.

The clouds hung low above the forest, heavy and grey and threatening snow at any second, their very presence seeming like an soon-to-be-fulfilled promise. Below them, Farris moved deftly through the trees, weaving between their trunks with her hands stuffed in her pockets and her cheeks flushed a bright red from a combination of excitement and the lingering chill that permeated the air. She'd left the coven's cabin hours ago when the first light of dawn had crept across the sky with the singular mission of making her way into town and retrieving her beloved Earl Gray tea, but she'd quickly gotten distracted as she paused time and time again to sketch the local ecology or snap photos of whatever fauna crossed her path, ultimately reaching Ute far later than she had intended.

A lengthy chat with the cashier in the general store about a flyer she'd spotted in town didn't improve her timing, and so now as she made her way home it was late enough in the day that the shadows of the trees stretched long over the forest floor - likely close to three in the afternoon if her intuition was right (and it often was). Since arriving in Ute a few weeks ago Farris had taken to these daily trips, scouting the woods and town, gathering information on anything she figured that the coven might need down the road, furiously scribbling in her journal at all hours of the day. The only reason she didn't have it out even now was because it had simply grown too cold for her fingers to be of any real use - and besides, they were tightly clutched around a neatly folded piece of paper in her pocket, the real spoils from her trip into town.

Farris's eyes shone bright with excitement as the familiar cabin gradually crept into view, nestled between the towering pines as though it had sprung up from the forest floor as well, their unique - and very well lit- brethren. Farris bound up the steps, skipping a couple in her haste, and pausing only to toe off her muddy boots by the door before slipping inside. The cabin was warm, almost balmy, a stark contrast to the oncoming winter that Farris had just escaped from, and her nose and cheeks tingled at the sudden temperature shift. Immediately she made her way towards the kitchen to deposit her goods, hollering into the quiet house, "Honey, I'm home! I've got a bounty of tea and an undeniably charming personality!" Before turning to rummage around in the cupboard for her favorite mug, Farris pulled the brightly colored flyer from her pocket, spreading it gingerly on the counter, a grin spreading across her face as she read it over one more time - a Harvest Festival.

Gravel crunched under Johann's boots, the noise swallowed up by the bustling sound of moving boxes and voices calling out instructions before it even reached his ears. The alpha nodded his head absentmindedly as he listened the hunched old woman in front of him debating whether the radishes should go on the ground or next to the winter squash on the display stand, slowly shifting the crates in his arms from side to side as she went over the merits of each option. A small, fond smile played at the corner of his lips, crinkling the edges his eyes as he chuckled softly to himself - with every new stack of crates that he'd brought over for her, Betty had spent minutes agonizing over their placement before giving up and letting him put them wherever he thought was best. Johann was more than happy to humor her debate, after all, he'd cleared his schedule for the day to volunteer for the Last Harvest Festival, so he really had nowhere else to be.

Just as Betty was starting in on her third round-about debate, Johann felt a warm hand clap him on the back and he turned to face the hand's owner, smile widening when he saw that it was Betty's husband, and director of the festival, Mason. "Aww, Bets, let the poor boy take a break. He's done just about all that needs doing," the old man drawled, indicating a spot on the booth where Johann could place the radishes. Before Johann could protest, the boxes were lifted from his grasp and promptly replaced with a steaming cider and fresh, warm doughnut, as Mason shooed him away with a wave of his hand. Through a mouthful of doughnut Johann thanked him, promising to be back shortly.

The alpha maneuvered his way through the growing groups of vendors towards the brightly lit café at the edge of the town square, calling out a greeting to the owner as he entered the warm building. It wasn't until he was inside that Johann became aware of just how chilled his fingers were - he'd been helping set up since mid-morning, building small wooden stands, hanging lights, and of course, moving crates for whatever vendors needed help. As Johann slid into an unoccupied booth by the window, flexing his fingers to warm them up, he idly wondered when the rest of the pack would begin to show, and if he time to run back to the ranch to take a quick shower before they did. A quick glance to the sky promised snow from the grey, low handing clouds, and even though a quick sniff confirmed that a shower was in fact needed, Johann figured his time would be better spent hanging tarps over the booths that weren't yet waterproofed - after his cider was gone that is. Settling into his booth, Johann turned his gaze to the people in the square, content for a moment to simply watch the only place he knew as home go about their annual rituals, comforting in their consistency underneath the ominously darkening sky.

The library was all but silent, save for the low murmur of a couple of students and the scratching of pencil on paper - the quiet melody of Kai's life. So far this day had passed like many before it, smoothly and with little pretense of excitement, filled with the increasingly familiar faces of the library regulars and the unceasingly comforting stillness that confirmed Kai's decision to move to Ute. A chill had crept into the library at some point, permeating through the two sweaters that Kai had thrown on that morning when the floorboards numbed his feet on the way to make coffee; if staying warm meant looking like one of the villains from the original ghostbusters movie, than so be it.

A soft chime from the clock hung next to the entrance indicated that it was nearly four thirty, and about time to begin shooing out the last few folks still lingering among the stacks. In the year since he'd come to town, Kai had grown to know most of the library patrons by name, so he was able to chat amicably with the middle-aged Mrs. Jenkins about her children and how they were doing in college, and how he was certain that Cecily would figure out Proust if she gave the author a fourth pass, as he accompanied her to the door, locking behind her with a final click and a small wave. A quick glance around confirmed that his favorite, albeit only, coworker was nowhere in sight as Kai made his way back towards his desk in the research section. On a normal night this is where he would stay for hours, pouring over the old case files that he kept buried in his satchel under bills and crumpled takeout menus. But instead, his eyes fell of a number of bright flyers at the corner of his desk, stacked neatly next to his jar of pencils.

The year before Kai had arrived just after the Last Harvest Festival, but the soup that his neighbor Mirablle had delivered as his 'town greeting' was supposedly made with the vegetables from the event. She'd appeared like some kind of miracle on his porch days after he'd finished arranging the last of his things - after his childhood, he had moving down to an art form - and while her warm soup and warmer smile hadn't saved him from yet another terrified night, spent wideawake staring at the cracks in his new ceiling, she'd made him feel less alone than he had before. It was high time that he got her a thank you gift, and besides, he'd made soft plans to meet up with Emmett at the Festival. "Guess my evening is set then," he murmured absentmindedly to himself, grabbing his satchel, and heading out into the chilly November air.
