Welcome to Rydell Academy, the world's most prestigious hero training facility. If you have made
it this far it's because you've proven yourself to be a worthy candidate, be it through strength or
sheer determination. A power shift has occurred over the last few month; one that could lead to
disastrous consequences. Old heroes are being taken out by younger, more powerful villains. The
number of heroes is plummeting and crime is on the rise. The academy is rushing to make up for
this, increasing security measures and putting its students through rigorous training. Even with a
seemingly unbreakable force field surrounding it, rumors claim that Rydell is no longer safe. Will
you stick around? Or will you give on your dream of being a hero for your own safety?

The dark-haired youth gazed around the gym, observing his classmates with silent disinterest. Today was assessment day for the academy, a monthly event that all students were required to attend. The teachers would access the growth of their abilities and assign homework accordingly. This homework was different than regular schoolwork, centering solely on the student's power. The teachers would determine what area the student needed to improve in and give them something to work on over the next month. Aim, control, stamina...there were many areas a student could need to work on. If you were lucky, you would only have one or two things that proved particularly difficult for you. Jasper already knew what his homework would be; his power was extremely unstable. It always had been, ever since he was a child, and he struggled to keep it contained. His turn would come, he would do his demonstration, he would burn something down, and he would be given the same homework he'd been given since he'd gotten there. Control. Jasper let out a low sigh, feeling his power coiling restlessly under his skin, eager to prove its strength.

Josie was, quite frankly, bored out of her mind. She leaned against the wall, a ways off from her fellow students, and waited for assessments to begin. The whole affair was useless, at least in her mind. Those with the ability to adapt and grow would do so of their own accord. Those who couldn't? Well, they didn't deserve to be heroes. Half of the students would never make it to hero status, either dropping out of their own accord or being forced to leave due to lack of progress. Josie already had excellent control of her power, despite rarely getting the opportunity to use it, and could easily use it in a battle settling. The only thing she had left to improve upon was her stamina. She could never use her power for very long without tiring herself out, both mentally and physically. If she could just fix that, she would be a hero in no time. Her mother would be so proud of her; Josie couldn't fail. Not after she had come so far. The girl absentmindedly played with her bright locks, the same color as her father's if what her mother told her was correct. She had never met the man. Would he have been proud of her too? Josie shook her head, forcing that thought from her mind. He wasn't around; that didn't matter.

indentAssessment day was an uncomfortable event for August, he hated when people watched him used his abilities and the inevitable pain that followed. He was lucky if he still felt the same long enough to get away from the teachers' eyes. Since coming to the academy and experiencing his first assessment, he'd been given work to fix his stamina so that he wouldn't collapse in the heat of the moment after using his abilities for too long. Despite his abilities no longer left him feeling as weak as before, there was still a more serious issue that needed to be dealt with. The amount of time it took for him to return to his normal sunshiney self was increasing. After the last assessment day, it took him nearly four days before he felt the corrupting darkness fade to the very back of his mind. If he doesn't find a way to stop the corruption from the darkness soon, he feared he would be forced to leave or that something much worse. Auggie's hands were trembling slightly as he watched the students take their turns, in all honesty, he hated his abilities. They were helpful in keeping him and others safe but at the cost of possibly corrupting his soul to the point where he may become like the very people he was being trained to defeat. It was something he saw in his nightmares almost every night with him suddenly turning against his friends and being unable to stop himself from bringing harm to others.

indentA lot of things pissed Eli off. He could ramble on and on about every little thing that irked him the wrong way. Assessment day was one of them. Why should someone judge his power when they didn't understand what it was. What gave them the right to sit there and tell him what his power was and wasn't good at. For the years he's been here training they always told him the same thing; his power wasn't strong enough and he had to broaden his control over it. What even did that mean? Eli's power wasn't like most. He had structured limits-the laws of nature. That was it. He couldn't broaden his power beyond that. He couldn't play god per se. But the damn teachers didn't seem to understand that. So the same thing was bound to come up again. Broaden your hold on the laws of nature. Like that was possible. Eli let out a scoff at the thoughts that plagued his mind before adjusting his position against the wall. Currently, he was sitting down against the wall watching the others do their thing. Elbow on his knee and head in hand. Expressionless. But when wasn't he?

indentEli's eyes shifted from the current student showcasing their ability to the students anxiously waiting. He could count several people who were nervous and anxious. And for what reason? There was none. What was there to be scared of, a pencil and pen writing down? Oh no! How scary. It caused another scoff to escape Eli's lips. He could think of two people he knew weren't nervous. Two people he really didn't enjoy. Josie and Sepideh. Both of them ticked him off in every single way. First was Josie. She was overconfident in her ability and it really wasn't anything to boast. Especially against Eli himself. Not many people did stand a chance against Eli and his power-he could simply erase the effect of their power on himself. But there was one who he couldn't beat. Sepideh. Something about her power and Eli not being quite fully able to understand it made so he couldn't prevent her from hitting him. It made no sense to the scholar and it infuriated him. She was a brat that needed to be put in her place. And Eli wanted to be the one to do so.

indentThe thoughts racing in the heroes' mind only caused his power to leak out. The negative aura around him thickening and repelling the younger students away. It wasn't uncommon for this to happen. The younger students who never had met Eli or his power were bound to scamper away. It was a lot to take in at once-to feel this sudden negative energy and have it drive you away. It honestly gave Eli some space to himself which was favored. He really only enjoyed talking to a few people and the underclassman only ticked him off. They were always cocky and go-getters. Half of them wouldn't even make it this far. Rightfully so. Only the strongest survived in this world and became heroes. Eli knew he was strong enough to make it but the question that held him back never changed. Did he want to? Logically it was smart. But something about spending his life to saving others and having to tailor himself to fit the media and be 'perfect' wasn't something he was interested in. No. He'd rather take his chances elsewhere.

"Jasper Hawthorn!" Garrett Wilson, otherwise known as Stonewall, called out. He had rose to fame at the young age of nineteen, taking out a major villain on only his second outing. He wasn't the easiest man to get along with, no-nonsense and strict, but he was admirable for his strength and strategic abilities. Jasper cracked his stiff neck, stepping forward. Many of the new students watched on, curious. For most people, their powers don't physically manifest unless used. Some of the unlucky (or lucky, depending on who you asked) ones would have physically linked abilities such as wings. Jasper was part of the majority, his powers invisible unless activated. Wilson nodded, gesturing to the target against the far side of the gym. The dark-haired youth raised his arm, hand outstretched. Blue flames burst from his arm, curling around it before launching towards the target. The practice dummy was set ablaze in seconds, going up in a massive burst of flame. The walls were made of concrete for good reason. The floors, unfortunately, were not. The shining wood around the dummy was set ablaze as well, just as Jasper had expected. Jude Michaelson, another teacher, stepped forward. A bucket of water was thrown onto the floor, the hero freezing it over with the touch of his hand and killing the flames with his ice.

Josie watched as Jasper Hawthorn stepped forward for his assessment. She took a few steps back instinctively, pressing her back firmly against the wall. She had to admit, his power was incredibly powerful, with potential to be extremely lethal. It was far from a useless ability. However, his lack of control over it made him a hazard. 'Why do they continue to let him attend this academy? He's almost burned down the gym on multiple occasions! He even set a dumpster on fire!' The redheaded youth narrowed her eyes, watching him with crossed arms and a look of distaste. 'It's not like he's a particularly likable guy either. Heroes have to be good at talking to the public. He's one of the most antisocial people I know. Well, him and that friend of his.' Her eyes glanced over to Eli. 'No, they aren't going to last much longer. Not if they keep this up.'

γ€€γ€€γ€€OUT OF ALL OF the things that James did not want to be late for, but inevitably ended up being so, the academy assessment
day was one that he super did not want to be late for. He did not have the time to bother with his locker, nor did he care to bother
with it. Inside of his backpack, a ratty old blue thing that James seems to hold dear to his heart, was a portable game of tic-tac-to
e and a travel size bag of chips. You see, he was looking forward to assessment day. Though his powers were nothing to marvel at,
he found that others were, and sitting and watching those powers was seen as cool and enjoyable by him. And, as a plus, if he wer
e to bring a bag of chips, maybe somebody would come up to him and ask for a chip! He would gladly give a chip to said chip-asker
-for, of course, and maybe they would even sit down and talk to him, too. James likes to talk to people, and he would like to think
that people like to talk to him back. But, for today, James was really only planning on sitting next to and sharing his bag of chips w
ith one person who he was super excited to see. His best friend!

γ€€γ€€γ€€As he reached the large entrance doors of the gymnasium, his backpack remaining on his shoulders, James would enter the r
oom in a chipper sort of manner. His hands were on the straps of his backpack, and a big smile was on his face. He found it a little
odd that the air of the gymnasium smelled a little bit like smoke, though, but he did not give it another moments thought. As he pa
ssed, James would lift his hand from off of his backpack strap and wave cheerfully (if not enthusiastically) to those that he noticed
in that moment. He would wave to Jasper, and to Josie, as he made his way to one side of the room. He waved to August, too, as so
on as he noticed him, before his attention was turned to somebody else. This time, James had raised both of his hands to wave, cal
ling out to the sulking figure up against the wall. "Eli!"
