effie was about to knock one more time. 'i just want to help,' she thought silently, a look of hard dedication appearing on her face as she knitted her brow. then, finally, the boy opened the door. effies expression softened instantly as she noticed the wet stains on his face; he had been crying. not only that, but he was shaking, shaking violently, and that worried her. "hey are you okay-" she started, but she was instantly cut off.
she stared blankly at him, her brown doe like eyes blinking just once in the middle of his frantic speech. she opened her mouth to say something, then closed it. effie was starstruck, but not in the good way. she finally brought her hand down from where the door once was and let it fall to her side. "im... sorry?" she started, slanting her eyebrows now. "i just... thought maybe i could help you... i noticed something was wrong and i..." her sentences seemed to fade in and out.
his words had punctured her heart, shot right through, and left an empty hole. they were sharp like glass shards and effie was just a balloon, now leaking the only little bit of helium she had had left. "im sorry," she mumbled yet again. tears welled in her eyes as she looked down at his feet, then back up at him. "you should try to be more receptive to others help!" effie said loudly, clutching the hem of her shirt with one hand as she turned and darted down the hall. she didnt know where she was going. she was just... going. past lilly, past some dark haired girl, past all the doors and down the stairs.
had she said the right thing? maybe it was the wrong thing? the last part was just impulse, it just came out, and it wasnt the right thing to say at the time, effie realized as she shuffled down the stairwell. tears started to leak from her eyes as she stepped. right foot, then left foot, down the stairs in her brown mary janes until she reached the first floor. effie was out of breath now, and no longer were tears streaming down her cheeks, however the ones that had had left a wet stain upon her fair skin.
breathing hard, she leaned back against a towering pillar in the foyer, looking up at the high ceiling and wondering where to go from here. she couldnt go back to her room- it was right across from the boy's. and there would be no point in going to the lecture hall again. besides, first years and second years were still flooding out of it down the hall.
but when effie looked up, one of them caught her eye. it was a black haired girl, a tall one with brown eyes that looked troubled and down towards the floor. she was beautiful, gorgeous even, with the wavy black locks falling from her head to her shoulders. effie felt something in her chest flutter as she instinctively took a step forward, then a step back. 'stop,' she told herself. though the girl looked troubled, so had the boy before. effie didnt want to get involved in something too big for her. again. what if this girl told her off like the boy? what if she wanted nothing to do with her? but effie... couldnt help herself. she sprinted away from the pillar and stopped to the side of the girl just a few feet away. what should she do? say hi? compliment her? ask her if she could take a picture? no, that would be rude. or would it be a compliment? effie shook her head at herself, looked down quickly, and took a few slow steps forward in her small black jeans.
"hello?" she asked the girl, looking up with concerned eyes. she sniffled once to get the tears out of her system from before, then took noticed to what the girl was fiddling with in her hand. her eyes widened as she stared. it was beautiful, just like her... "that necklace is really pretty," effie blurted out.
