alaynah paused for a second after kam’s question. “i’m sure you’ll find out soon.” she muttered before putting the car in drive. luckily, traffic wasn’t too awful on this side of the city. however, alaynah was notoriously known for being an awful driver. when they were almost at the school, she slammed on breaks to let a pigeon cross the road. every loose object in the vehicle went flying forward, including an old cup of coffee which slammed against the windshield and splattered on her dashboard. luckily, it didn’t spill far enough to touch her or kam. “oops.” she said, slightly embarrassed.
when they got the school, she got out and tossed the keys to the valet, mumbling an apology for the mess. “welcome to hell.” she said to kamden as they walked into the building, not joking in the slightest. she scanned the room, people dancing and lights strobing. her dad had just preformed to these teens, but he hadn’t even said hi to her when he was in town. alaynah had taught herself not to be disappointed, after her parents missed almost every christmas and birthday. she used to spend those holidays with ariana’s family, the burkes were more of a family than her actual blood ever was. speak of the devil, ariana came waltzing you to her.
immediately alaynah got visibly nervous. “um, i’m j-just gonna go” she sputtered, but it was too late. when her ex-bestfriend hugged her, every muscle in her body went as tense as it could. “still not a psychopath, ana” she managed to say without her voice quivering. “well, i’m just gonna... yeah...” the tall girl said awkwardly as ariana’s attention turned to kam. she didn’t want to be around to witness the queen bee of the school take the one friend she had managed to make.
awkwardly, she pivoted stiffly and headed to the punch table. palms sweaty, she downed three cups before she realized that a small congregation of girls was side eyeing her. alaynah’s eyes caught ambrose, who looked just as lonely as she felt. after contemplating it for a bit, she walked over to him. “feeling as out of place as i do?” she asked, studying abrose’s face. she had never been too awfully close with him, but now she would say that they were in similar positions. people on the inside looking out.
