Harlow smiled, he enjoyed the banter. "It's definitely the vibe," he copied the gesture the big man had made, "That and I'm probably the only non-local here," he shrugged.

"Sure," he replied to the man's suggestion, "I'd rather have someone who knows the area at my side then just wander aimlessly. As the wonderful deputy said, Don't wanna have to send out a search party. Especially just because some well-meaning idiot thought that joining a search party while visiting a new town was a good idea." At the last part, Harlow shot the Alpha a bright helpless smile. He knew he hadn't been very successful in his goal of befriending or at least getting friendly with the Alpha. He hadn't even got a name. But Harlow didn't really mind, there was a lot of other things you could learn about people just from small talk and banter; Mannerisms and such. Though not getting his trust meant it would be harder to gather the info he personally wanted. Harlow wasn't going to push his luck. He had hoped making a fool of himself and doing the opposite of what I hunter would normally do would work but, he couldn't blame the guy for the lack of trust. Harlow would just keep up with the talkative clueless visitor act and hope that it would either eventually wear down the man or he would just hit up another pack member (once he could get someone to tell him who else they had pinned) for info instead.

As Harlow followed the Alpha he observed how tense the man looked. It wasn't any evidence to allow him to judge the wolf pack one way or another, but Harlow found it important to note nonetheless. Swatting at a bug hovering around his face, he decided to bring up Bite for lack of anything else to talk about that didn't start with a question in the direction of the larger man. Most of the questions would've been normally harmless, i.e. 'Do you hike around here often?' or 'Do you usually have animal attacks like this?', which in this specific circumstance were real no-goes at the moment, so Bite it was.

"You know my dog would love this," Harlow remarked taking a moment to look up from searching for tracks, "I was thinking about bringing her but I didn't want her to get shot ya'know." After a second he continued, "Especially cause she's got some wolf in her. I recused her four years ago now, they said she was too domesticated and couldn't be returned to the wild, so I kept her." No one had told Harlow Bite was too domesticated but when he had first gotten her out he had brought her out into the wild and waited for her to run free. But the stubborn wolf didn't go anywhere instead staying at Harlow's side and comforting him the best a wolf could. He couldn't hold back the small smile that drifted across his face whenever he thought of that memory. He had been in a bad spot after Roxanne was killed and Bite's companionship was probably one of the few things that kept him from wasting away and becoming a shell of a person.

『 Tema 』- no. 38

Postby Wallflower11 » Fri Jun 05, 2020 9:09 am

『 Tema Snow 』
| Location - Cafe | tagged/interacting - Leo, Elowyia (Jack, Farris) |

She listened to the other two's banter timidly, she enjoyed watching other people's interactions it was always interesting to the dark-haired girl, but it was the kind of thing she didn't really know how to participate in. It was the reason she was a little relieved to answer Elowyia's question about the hunt. Leo looked at her with an expression of annoyance and reached out towards Tema's face causing the woman massive confusion as she leaned away from the man's hand. Tema didn't mind people touching her for the most part, but if she didn't expect it or was in a mood it caused her great discomfort. He did end up pulling away before he came in contact with her forehead.

She nodded at Leo's response "I feel the same way," though it wasn't like Tema had anyone who would ask her to go. She brightened at Leo's suggestion of her being a good lookout, it may have not been a direct compliment but someone thinking she might be good at something and helpful always made her glow. It wasn't something that happened all that often of the course of her life, though it was probably because she didn't interact with people or put many things out into the world to be complimented on. She barely caught the face the tall man made in disgust when he mentioned wolves. Not being especially close with him she didn't know why he didn't like wolves but she made a note of it in her brain as something she could ask about later if she was in need of conversation.

“All the visitors are going on the hunt, surprisingly. Especially the ones you were talking to at the funeral.” Tema had no idea who Leo was referring to but assumed he probably meant the wolf researchers, though Tema had only seen 'warrior puppy-dog man' and Evangeline at the funeral itself and they had left right after speaking with Johann. She had assumed Farris and the others in their weird group would be going since they were (allegedly) wildlife researchers and who better to find wildlife than the people who studied them. If Tema was being honest the main reason she had actually seriously considered going to the hunt was in the chance she could spend more time with Farris. But she didn't want to distract the woman from what was probably now a work-related matter and she would've felt like even more of a major stalker. Especially after yesterday’s incident when she followed the woman to the bookshop.

Elowyia chimed in with a mummer as she put her wet socks in the bag the muffins came in. "If you're both interested in going, I'll gladly tag along..." Tema cocked her head to one side, for some reason she hadn't considered going with Leo and Elowyia until the blonde had mentioned it. She wondered why she didn't see something like that when it was staring her in the face.

At the smaller woman's words about her having to go home first, Tema nodded, "That's fine with me if you don't mind me being there." It felt weird that she was going to see Elowyia's house, she didn't quite know why it was such a strange feeling but it was. It felt so personal. "Did the bookshop clerk actually consider her a friend?" Tema wondered.

Leo cracked a smile as he managed to get some form of laughter out of the golden women, especially after seeing her in such a tense mood after the funeral. Leo loved making others smile and feel happy, which was why he always kept a smile on his face, even if he didn't feel like or wanted to smile at all. "Well, I think yellow suits you." He said from Tema's side. "Half of the reason is that you're blond, but yellow has a lot of good and even bad meanings. Yellow can mean emotional strength, and being emotional in general. Also, clarity. You're quiet and try to hide how you feel sometimes, but you're quite transparent." Leo was very good at reading faces and body language to determine moods and forgot that not everyone else would find the quiet woman as easy to read like him. "Sunflowers are also yellow. They symbolize adoration and loyalty." He paused and tapped a finger to his bottom lip, thinking quietly. "A sunflower always turns its head towards the sun. The sun must be the most important thing to the flower. Without the sun, the sunflower has no purpose." Realizing he was getting completely off track, he broke off and chuckled at himself. He waved away his random lecture. He sounded like some proffesor giving a talk on romantic literature. "What I'm trying to say is, yellow just suits you." He looked at Tema. "You're more of a green. Emerald shade, I believe." He then looked back at Elowyia. "In the Buddhist culture, yellow seen as a symbol of humility and separation from materialistic society. That also suits you." Despite being an atheist, Leo followed a lot of the practices and lifestyles of the Buddhist religion, simply copying what he learned from his grandmother. Just like any other follower of said religion, colors, and auras were a big thing for him. His laid back personality was another effect of his grandmother's religion.

Leo watched as she changed her socks, suddenly looking up as she vocalized her desire to go with them. "Well, I didn't specifically say I was going, but I suppose I could if you guys wanted to. I'd be a fool to let you guys go out alone with whatever's wrecking havok in the woods." The large Asian found it odd that two deaths had happened almost consecutively in the last few days. It was like a spell of bad luck had hit the small town of Cranberry. "Let me just ask Susan. I'm not sure she'll let me off on such short notice since we're understaffed." With that, he gave them a quite formal nod, a little too used to playing waiter. He went back around the counter and through the kitchen, suddenly hesitating as he reached the door. Was this a good idea? He knocked quietly and opened the door, moving half of his body in. Susan was looking at him through her glasses, clearly questioning his presence. "Um..." The large man hesitated once more, suddenly not sure whether he was doing the right thing. Susan was already having a tougher time running the cafe without Charlie, and Leo's absence would surely hinder her more. Leo had told her that morning that he would stay for the day, and the thought of going back on it made him feel horrible. Leo made the decision to just leave and go back to manning the counter or continuing in the kitchen. He couldn't just leave his job alone just for the pleasure of going out with friends. He shook his head to let Susan know it was nothing and stepped back. "I'm closing early." He looked up, shocked at the unexpected words, his eyes searching her face. "Pardon?" He asked, peeking back into the office. "I said I'm closing up early. Charlie's not feeling well and I'm not leaving you here alone." She repeated, sounded a little exasperated. Leo nodded meekly, giving her an apologetic smile. "Please tell him I said hi. I can close up for you if you'd like." But the elderly lady shook her head. "Get outta here, just put the closed sign up." "Are you sure-" A pointed look stopped him in his tracks. "Alright, I'll be on my way out, then. Take care of yourself!" He gave her a warm smile before closing the door and leaning back against it.

Leo was happy to be given the day off, but he was also worried about Charlie. The elderly man's health had been faltering slowly over the years, and it wouldn't be long until he was gone. He wasn't sure what Susan would do with the cafe after that, but Leo didn't want to leave her all by herself. Leo had dreams of leaving Cranberry and heading down to the city to make some actual use of his degree, or perhaps return to his country of origin, but he couldn't just leave Susan by herself. There were many people who cared for Susan, but Leo specifically left like he had to be there for her. Despite being scared of dogs, Leo was much like one himself. He was always making new friends, and loyal to the bone; a great strength, but also a flaw. Nonetheless, Leo thanked the air—or Good Fortune himself—for the stroke of luck and walked back into the main part of the cafe, smiling as his eyes settled back on Elowya and Tema. "Hurry up and let's get going, time waits for no one!" He said, taking off his apron and tossing it over the counter. He'd fix it tomorrow if Susan didn't get to it first. Leo was hoping to catch a glimpse of Elowyia's cat, being an adament cat person himself.

Jo scratched anxiously at her elbow, alternating between small twitches of her hands and chewing nervously on her fingernails as she trailed behind Jerrold. Her eyes darted back and forth as she stumbled after the beta, her feet catching on roots and rocks while she mumbled incoherently to herself. It was easier when she was a wolf, really; allowing herself to be driven by the instincts of the pack was far preferable to wallowing in all of her misdeeds and the horror that had become her life. Emotions flashed across Jo's face, her body racked with a tremble as the memory of their latest kill flashed through her shattered mind, vanishing as quickly as it had come. She and Jerrold had a job to do after all, and she really didn't want face Ma without any information on just how much the locals knew.

Nic snapped and snarled at his hunting companions, aggravation rolling off the black wolf in waves. The blood on his muzzle had yet to dry from their most recent kill - a small deer- but he was already itching to dig his teeth into fresh flesh once again. He glanced around to one of his companions, Crick, his snarls communicating to the other just how hungry he was - they were always hungry. The black wolf then moved over toward the form of his smaller companion, Danny, who had flopped down onto the pine carpeted forest floor as soon as he had finished eating. A sharp nip to brown wolf's flank roused the lazy hunter with a loud yelp, who hastily got to his feet, loping after the retreating form of black-furred companion. Once again they were on the hunt.

| |

Ma slunk through the forest, her muzzle close to the ground as she inhaled deeply. Even before she had brought her pack into the valley she guessed that there were likely other wolves in the area; it was far to nice to not be claimed. But that was no matter - it would be theirs soon enough. For the past few hours she and Sal had been following the faintest scents in the forest, tracking them through the valley and hoping to find the den. The scents were light enough that Ma couldn't be completely be sure what kind of wolf they belonged to, but as a cabin began to emerge from the woods and the scents got stronger and thicker, her lips curled back to reveal jagged yellow teeth - werewolves. They would be tricker to handle, but not impossible.

The redhead's frown deepened at the negative vibes that all but rolled off Bruno in waves, fighting the urge to wave his hands in the air in an attempt to disturb the invisible miasma. It was gross, and Xaviar wished he could do more to help the closed-off male with whatever it was he was going through. The most major downside of going off on his own every time there was a negative impact on his life was missing out on crucial moments within the pack. He didn't know what had happened to Bruno, Sasha, or the lot of them in general during his "camping trip", and he never truly would. It hurt quite a bit, and the man often found himself torn as a result of wanting to avoid negative experiences but also aid others in getting through their own. He didn't have much of a chance to fall into the pit of his thoughts, however, as Bruno's rising grabbed his attention.
xx
"Yeah, we'll be fine. I'm here to protect her if need be, and she's more than capable of holding her own. We know the drill, we're big kids and all that shtuff." The mention of knives had Xav picking at his nails some, a bad habit he couldn't quite kick. Sharp things made him nervous, despite being the proud owner of a set of them in wolf form, and knives happened to be very sharp. Lovely. However, if it came down to it, he was glad to know that they were an option. An option he hoped he'd never really need to invest in. As for going through his stuff, Xaviar still hadn't even considered returning Bruno's wii - it sat stuffed in the very back of the ginger's console cabinet in the hopes that the other man would never notice. He'd gotten lucky that Bruno had been out of town when he'd picked up mario kart at a local gaming store, and was able to pilfer the little white box without him noticing. If he were to return it now that Bruno was back......Xav didn't really want to think about the deadly looks and possible physical trauma his packmate would serve up.
xx
"Of course dudes, and you be safe, too. It's wacky out there and I don't need you getting nommed on like a chicken bone." Xav tried for a half-smile, his weak attempt at lightening the mood pathetic even to himself. He still meant every word, though, not wanting someone he cared about to get hurt. He couldn't save them all, if it came down to it, so better to make them hyper aware of their own safety to prevent that sort of situation. "Snacks sound good though. Cheddar chex mix please!"

Johann Vidar | tagged: Harlow| location: hunt
╚════════════════════☾☼☽════════════════════╝

Johann nodded silently as he listened to Harlow's friendly chatter beside him while the two men made their way deeper into the forest. All around them the aspen trees swayed faintly in the breeze, the soft rustling of their leaves filling the silence between sentences and creating a false sense of tranquility. Harlow was friendly, almost too friendly, and a quick glance around confirmed to Johann that they weren't in the immediate eyesight of the other locals; if things turned ugly and this stranger was a hunter, Johann felt confident that he could take him on - even if shifting wasn't an option.

As the two men continued walking, Johann caught the tail-end of what Harlow had been chatting about, forcing a casual smile onto his face. "A wolf-dog, huh? I wouldn't have brought her either, I think you made the right call there," he chuckled, continuing, "Folks here can be pretty trigger-happy, and I certainly wouldn't want my traveling companion to get shot on the first day in a new town," the alpha finished, trying his best to fall back onto the casual banter that he commonly used, but finding it difficult to do so as he simultaneously studied the other's man's body language. Just before he could ask for more details on Harlow's exact reason for being in Cranberry a strong breeze sliced through the trees, the scent that it carried stopping Johann dead in his tracks.

The cloying smell of rot filled his nose, along with smoke and...something undeniably human, though he couldn't exactly place it. Then, fainter than all the other scents came the unmistakable smell of blood. There was no question that these wolves were fresh from a kill, and more importantly, that they were shifters. Rage surged through Johann's veins, along with the near-overwhelming desire to drive the interlopers away from the pack's territory, but neither of those actions were an option with the stranger standing beside him. Clearing his throat and forcing himself to remain as casual as possible, Johann managed a soft chuckle. "Hey, you know what, I can't see any of the other searchers; we should probably head back."

Farris Sannhildr | tagged: Bright| location: hunt
╚════════════════════☾☼☽════════════════════╝

Farris made her way diligently through the forest, her steps near silent due to years of training and field practice with Rowan. The huntress scoured her area for even the slightest sign of a pack, or even a lone wolf, pulling out her journal and scribbling down whatever seemed relevant. A snapped branch here, some disturbed underbrush there - nothing of consequence though. Farris scrunched her face in frustration as she continued through the forest, pausing only to occasionally glance up through the trees to make sure that she hadn't strayed too far from her group. After a while more of painstaking movement and observation, the brunette came to a halt. She and Jack had been at the scene of the attack yesterday, she had seen the eyes of the wolves - but there was no evidence, fresh or old, to indicate where exactly the pack had gone.

Farris chewed her lip as she stood still, contemplating what exactly the lack of tracks could mean. Most packs that she helped to hunt down were messy and reckless, and it rarely took effort to find them after the hunter figured out their eating habits. And wild animals? Her family could track those in their sleep - so that meant that they were dealing with something new here. In her experience shifters often retained some intelligence, but never to the extent of actively being able to cover their tracks. And if they were smart enough to evade an entire town of locals and the professional hunters, who knew what else they were capable of? Ice settled into Farris' veins along with the realization that her family had underestimated what exactly they were up against.

Needing someone to bounce theories off of, Farris glanced around searching for Jack. However, it seemed that he was conversing with the person that she hadn't recognized from the funeral, Lyall, so she instead began to make her way over to Bright. In the past couple of days their work had been...less than satisfactory, but Farris needed to talk to someone, and the poor sod was closest. She silently approached him, only making an effort to snap twigs and branches under her boots as she got closer, knowing better than to spook her fellow hunter out in the field. Once she was near enough, Farris shot the tall man a quick smile, falling into step beside him. "Hey, I'm no psychic, but I'm willing to bet you haven't seen anything really important. I haven't either...it's odd right? Normally after we find a kill the pack is right behind...but that's not the case here. And unless shifters can suddenly grow wings and fly, which, yikes, then these guys are much smarter than any group I've ever dealt with in the past."

Harlow nodded, "Yeah that would definitely be one way to start my stay in Cranberry." Bite had been lucky when it came to 'on the job' injuries and only managed to wrack up a couple of sprains and scratches and one broken bone during the twos time together, though she did have several scars and burns from before Harlow had gotten her. At least Harlow had seen a veterinary practice on the way into Cranberry so if anything did happen here he knew there was somewhere that could treat her nearby.

A gust rustled through the trees overhead, and the alpha froze tension rippling up his body. For a millisecond, Harlow could see every detail of the wolf's raw instinct and power, before the man slid back into the friendly local role he had before. Harlow quickly followed the man's gaze to somewhere off into the distance, it didn't seem like the alpha was going to shift or was anymore on to him then he was five seconds before. He fought the impulse to drop the character he was playing, managing to keep his expression one of mild concern.

"That sounds like a good idea," he replied to the alpha. Harlow casually put his hand on his handgun, not for fear of the alpha, it didn't seem like the alpha was looking to attack, but something had spooked the wolf and honestly, unless it was him or another one of the hunters, Harlow didn't really want to be near anything that spooked an alpha werewolf. He let them lapse into a tense silence, walking back towards where they had left the group. He wished he could get a better view of his surroundings but he was stuck on the ground without his scope and rifle. He kept himself alert for anything that was out of the ordinary that could've set off the alpha but being a human and not a wolf left him with a disadvantage when it came to senses.

𝙴𝚕𝚘𝚠𝚢𝚒𝚊 - 40

Elowyia nodded along as Leo explained his thought process, savoring the last bit of muffin in her mouth before swallowing it. She hadn't had a lot of sweet treats, or really treats in general growing up, and she planned on making the container she was now in possession of last as long as possible. Or at least until she was able to go grocery shopping. She would be sure to get mochi icecream or cookies if she had room in her budget. Collecting her things as the large man walked behind the counter once again, the blonde paused to tug down the corner of her shorts. The slight tan line that was beginning to show there both excited Elowyia and sent a jumble of nerves tumbling through her stomach. She liked that she was tanning for once, but it also meant that if she wanted to tan fully - which was certainly rare for the pale young woman - she'd have to find her swimming suit and make her back porch her new bedroom. The thought of exposing herself in such a way, even in the privacy of her secluded home, put El on edge. There was a reason the fall and winter months were her favorite; she could get away with wearing long pants and baggy shirts without seeming odd or out of place.
xxxx
Shaking herself mentally to avoid the negative thoughts that always seemed to swarm at the worst moments, Elowyia turned to face Tema, her shy smile creeping back into place as she made eye contact with the brunette. "I hope you don't mind that we stop there, I know it seems a little weird." The young woman didn't often invite others over, but she wanted to take steps in the direction of a better social life, and this seemed to be a good excuse to do so. "I promise my cat doesn't bite. Nova's terrified of dust bunnies, she couldn't hurt anyone." She wasn't exaggerating, either. Her cat avoided dusty corners and under cabinets like they were the devil. Sitting on top of the fridge was preferred. Blue eyes darted back up to Leo as he bounded back out, exclaiming that they could go now. His abundant energy was almost overwhelming to Elowyia, but she appreciated it as part of the kind-hearted man and knew that she'd get used to it with time.
xxxx
"Alright, it's not far from here." The blonde murmured, shifting her weight happily in her fresh socks as she began making her way out of the cafe. It was a nice day today, hopefully it was a good omen.

Bright Malinon ♆
Second in Command| Location ➵ Forest | Mentions ➵ Farris
▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬

Bright watched and waited until everyone was well out of sight before turning back around and heading for the site where the murdered man was found. Bright had a harder time working around others, especially strangers. If anyone besides the hunters were around him, it'd mostly like ruin his workflow. There was only so much he could do around other people without giving away that he knew more than them. It probably wasn't the best idea to separate from the group, as he was isolating himself and Jack surely wanted to keep an eye on his hunters, but Bright was confident that he had no reason to be worried about getting hurt. Even if he was attacked, years of training were on his side.

Upon arriving at the site, his eyes gave a sweep of the area, the tall man taking in a deep breath. The scent of blood was still in the air. It looked like the townspeople had tried to cover the biggest of the blood spatters with leaves, but they didn't do a good job. Bright looked around the scene for a stick, huffing when he realized he would have to tear one off himself. Searching around, he found a low-hanging tree and made quick work of tearing off a small branch before returning to the site and scraping the leaves away. Now, he was left with bloody leaves and red earth. Taking a step back, he stared at the stains, considering all possibilities. It obviously wasn't a normal animal. No animal would make a kill so viciously. Bright hadn't been there to see the body, but he could tell when something has been mauled. Bright figured it was a wolf, just like Jack and Farris said, but it was important to consider all possibilities. The mountains were known for having many animals capable of killing humans. In the end, he conceded that it was indeed the work of shifters. Bright still couldn't get it in his head how they could be so vicious yet still retain some their cognitive abilities.

It was at times like these where Bright was at his best. No matter what he did off the field, he was always focused once on the hunt. The loud buzzing and flurried thoughts that usually occupied Bright's head were all gone now, as if shoved into a closet to be dealt with later. Bright had a job, and he would continue to work towards completing it until there was nothing left to do. This was indeed his best mindset. It was rare to see Bright in such a calm and focused state. Other times, he was closed off or looking like someone had just insulted his grandmother. It wasn't long before Bright heard voices and had to move the leaves back into place, tossing the stick in the bush and moving to the outreaches of the kill site, looking for something specific: tracks.

He searched and searched, but was unnerved to find that no visible tracks were left in the dirt. If they couldn't find a trail, it would be difficult to track down their adversaries. He frustratedly ran a hand through his hair before checking one last time, this time shining a light along the ground. His second search proved to be fruitful as he came across a smudged out print. He crouched down and stared at it before looking around it and spotting odd indents in the soil as if someone had wiped it with a towel. Then he understood. Whoever they were going against was smart enough to cover their tracks. This worried the tall man. Most of the packs they encountered were fairly easy to find and deal with, but it seemed like the hunters had come across a pack like no other. If these wolves knew to cover their own tracks in order to not get caught, then it was impossible to tell what else they were capable of doing.

Swiftly, Bright pulled out his phone and took a picture of the messed up print before putting it away and taking out a small notebook, quickly sketching the print and making sure the size and depth were accurate. Bright never depended too heavily on technology, as he'd never been able to use it growing up and was more used to traditional tactics. He closed the small book and stood up, reaching around to put it away. Figuring it was about to time get closer to the group, he wandered off to find them, keeping a distance once there. Bright was close enough the catch glimpses of them, but to not attract attention to himself, in case he needed to move off somewhere again. As long as the deputy didn't notice anything, Bright would be good.

His thoughts stilled almost like a startled animal at the sound of snapping branches, suddenly on high alert. After realizing that whoever was coming was by no means attempting to sneak up on him, he relaxed. It was a bad idea to creep up on Bright in general, but when he was tensed, the result could be nasty, especially if it was someone he wasn't fond of or didn't know. He took a moment to listen before deeming it to be Farris. After having been with them for so long, he could easily tell the footsteps of the hunters apart from others, whether it was their weight or speed. Harlow's footsteps, too, would soon be engrained in Bright's mind. He slowed down so she could catch up, only looking at her once she arrived at his side. The smile was unfortunately not returned, but the hunters knew Bright to be colder and more serious when on the prowl. "You're rambling, what are you worried about?" He asked, glancing in the direction of the party. He'd tell her about his finding once she shared hers, or the lack thereof.
