ooc;; i apologize for the immense
length of the post!! i got carried
away, and none of my future posts
are gonna be this long orz ^^"
this was mostly me trying to set
her up in the context of the
current events as naturally
as i could while still
making sense personality-wise
well, at the very least, technically.
the events leading up to rose's plain-out weird situation are as follows: ambrosine's plane had landed quite a couple of hours ago, and the girl was more than thankful to finally feel solid, static ground underneath her feet. the trip had lasted too long for ambrosine's personal and physical liking, and had she been cooped up in the last row of the plane for any longer, she would've definitely done a pyukumuku-esque show for the rest of the passengers. the trek from shalour to lumiose had already shaken her up to a point where she felt physically sick, and the flight from lumiose to goldenrod only cemented her motion sickness even more. despite her mother advising her to keep aulnoy on the plane with her as a way of comfort, rose decided against it, knowing it wouldn't be good for the ralts to sense not only her intestines being mixed like a protein shake but the other passengers' discomfort as well. it was bad enough that one of them had to suffer through the trip - she didn't want her partner to suffer as well.
after realizing she could be lax with her time, ambrosine picked up her luggage and exited the terminal through the main gate, eyes darting from left to right, observing, tracking, looking. the airport had a high concentration of both tourists and trainers, or at least people with pokemon. rose scolded herself mentally that she shouldn't generalize - not every person with a pokemon is a trainer, and not every person without a pokemon isn't a trainer. after all - she wasn't exactly one herself, despite having ownership over aulnoy. the airport lobby was structured in a similar fashion that an art museum would be - ridiculously high ceilings with arched, gothic-styled but still modern windows letting in golden rays of sunshine from every possible angle, walls carefully chiseled with various basso and alto friezes depicting pokemon and human cohabitation. ambrosine slowly started realising where goldenrod's name originated from, and why it was considered the city of luxurious splendor.
needless to say, the streets of the city itself weren't any less impressive than the over-stylized airport lobby. the houses and buildings, while not uniform to the exact shade, were a gold-yellow color and seemed to reflect the sunlight even brighter; the cobblestone pavements around them were tinged gold as well, and even the beaten paths made of brown brick seemed to have a little glint of gold in them. considering the fact that she still had quite a bit of time before the opening and housing ceremonies - or did they even have those sorts of things? - she sat down in the closest cafe and ordered a mineral sparkling water. despite skimming over the brochure and the site of the academy, ambrosine didn't really pay attention nor did she remember if there was any sort of thing like that organized. the only thing she did remember, though, was that she was supposed to show up at a certain hour - nothing more, nothing less.
propping her hand luggage - a laptop over-the-shoulder bag - onto her suitcase, ambrosine pulled both acelera's brochure and aulnoy's pokeball out of the bag. she was about to instinctively click on the ball's button and release aulnoy, but her finger froze midway, hovering over the button while her eyes darted once again over her surroundings. the cafe was pretty busy, and she'd rather not risk a crying, overwhelmed ralts right at the beginning of her so-called journey. kissing the top of the ball and putting it into her jeans pocket, with one hand she opened the brochure and re-read it for the n-th time today.
okay, no ceremony until later tonight. but, there was a two-hour registration and key-claiming period for the housing complex, so she should probably arrive a bit before that. the watch on her hand showed that it was two-thirty p.m., which meant she still had two and a half hours to waste. okay, two - she should be at the very least half an hour early. she put away the brochure back into the bag, crumpling it slightly in the process, and leaned back on her chair. two hours to kill was quite a bit of time - and although goldenrod offered various entertainment trough the game corner and department store, rose felt like she would become far too focused on shopping and gaming and lose track of time. cracking her knuckles, she took her laptop from her bag and booted it up. might as well get some studying done - college awaits her after this after all, and the enrollment rate is slim. plus, she's got a clock on her laptop, and the academy, from what she could tell, was not far from the cafe she was currently in.
after reading up on prof. oak's study of prenatal and natal cognitive development in babies exposed to pokemon from conception and realizing she had just enough time to get to the academy early, she shut the laptop, put it back in the bag, and fished out her wallet - in the shape of a solosis, of course - to pay for the drink. she left a hefty tip, as is per kalosian customs.
a five-minute walk later, she was at acelera academy's main gate fifteen minutes early. just like the rest of the buildings in goldenrod, acelera's main building didn't lack any of the grandeur that the other buildings had. in fact, something about the academy made the building seem even bigger in ambrosine's eyes. whether the building truly was bigger and fancier than the rest or if it was just rose's nervousness and excitement over-glorifying the academy, we will never know. dragging her suitcase behind her rose entered the main lobby, and boy - it was packed. students and pokemon of every shape and size were mingling and chatting it up in the lobby. some were standing, others were sitting, in pairs, groups, or all alone with their pokemon - acelera really was geared for everyone.
wandering around the lobby with a sizeable suitcase while trying to avoid and not hit anyone was no easy feat, but rose somehow managed to make her way to the nearest info counter. after talking a bit with the middle-aged guy behind the counter, he suggested she should start the registration process right away to avoid the mess that would come once everyone started registering at five. she gave her kalosian id to the man, who started typing away at his computer, inputting all of ambrosine's data into the student database.
it felt like forever, even though it only took a couple of minutes, but the man - yamato, or so ambrosine thinks it says on his nameplate - handed her id back with a smile.
"all done! your dorm number should be assigned to you soon, after which you'll be able to pick up your key and elementary things like spare sheets and such," yamato said, "oh! and i also forgot - do you already have a pokemon with you or have you yet to pick one?"
"i have one, actually," rose spoke, "a level five ralts. i don't think i'll be picking any more soon though, i'm fine with her only for now." her fingers absentmindedly brushed over the pocket in which aulnoy's ball was in. she had barely managed to build up a stable connection with aulnoy over the past four years, and even after four years, they still couldn't sort some things out between each other. getting another pokemon, let alone an unfamiliar one, whilst her bond with her first pokemon wasn't strongly established would only bring her more trouble. if she was doing this, she will be doing all of this one step at a time. for her own sake, and for aulnoy's sake.
"ah, okay. i'm gonna need your ralt's basic info, as well as register it into our database visually. there's been a rising of trainer-on-trainer stealing crimes, and since we highly value both our students as well as their pokemon, we try to do everything to prevent pokemon kidnapping or at the very least try and heighten our security against it," yamato explained in a solemn voice, and something about the tone of his voice made shivers pass trough ambrosine's spine. pokemon being kidnapped? wasn't that last decade's problem? as far as her parents told her, most, if not all of the criminal gangs and teams have been captured and sanctioned maximally during the last decade. johto even had the reputation of being a high-safety region. but hey, at the very least, even if it was or wasn't actually happening, a preventive measure is better than no measure at all.
"okay," rose said, a tad quieter this time, "aulnoy's a lever five ralts. female, wears a soothe bell nearly constantly. her attacks are double team, shadow sneak, confusion, and uh, disarming voice i think?"
"mmhm," yamato nodded absentmindedly as he typed in aulnoy's data, "okay, and now i'm gonna need to scan her and copy that data to the pc. mind letting her out of her ball?"
ambrosine froze. the hall was full and there was no way that aulnoy wouldn't start crying right on the spot. "uuuh..." she muttered out, "i can't guarantee that she's not going to scream and cry."
"ma'am, you underestimate us - we've had wishmurs and toxels throw tantrums so bad that some staff members temporarily lost their hearing. we've handled lots of sensitive baby pokemon, and your ralts surely isn't the worst of them all," yamato spoke reassuringly. somehow, ambrosine wasn't reassured. aulnoy could be immobile for days after a stressful encounter, and she desperately tried minimizing those types of situations to nil. it was painful watching aulnoy go trough those types of episodes. she gulped. however, the staff here was trained, that's for sure. after all, teaching a bunch of adults basic things about pokemon that almost every kid above the age of ten knew surely required a lot of patience, right...?
rose sighed. her hands got a little sweaty from the nervousness, despite her own efforts to stay calm. if she couldn't be calm, then aulnoy wouldn't be calm as well. taking a deep breath, her fingers nimbly fished out the ball from her pocket and clicked the button, releasing a string of red lighting that fell onto the info counter and started forming a humanoid shape, eventually forming a sharp, distinct silhouette of the feeling pokemon that finally solidified into a white body and green bowl cut.
"ru... ru...?"
oh no. rose cringed inwardly as aulnoy started looking around. humans. pokemon. humans. pokemon. her eyes slowly grew wide. humans. scary pokemon. weird humans. pokemon. mister yamato. aulnoy's eyes teared up, cheeks slowly turning a flaming red.
"ru...ru...ru...!! RUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!"
and there she goes. rose had to cover her ears once aulnoy started screaming; the sound was so sharp and loud her eardrums ached, and she was sure yamato's eardrums weren't spared either. in fact, even if the pain from aulnoy's piercing crying was awful, she could sense, feel multiple pairs of eyes on them; she was sure almost all trainers and their pokemon whipped their heads towards them after aulnoy started screaming. meanwhile, aulnoy jumped off the counter swiftly and took off running to the only place she couldn't sense a human presence - the toilets.
"RUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!"
"AULNOY, WAIT!"
and just like that, ambrosine ran after her partner into the women's toilets. aulnoy managed to slip into the farthest stall, and ambrosine, hot on her heels, slid inside the stall right before aulnoy slammed and locked the door of the stall with her telekinesis.
leaning against the door of the stall rose took in the sight before her very carefully - aulnoy's entire visible face was red from crying and weeping, and snot and tears started dripping down her face towards her usually pristine white robe. even though she wanted to panic and pounce on aulnoy, wipe away her tears and snot and cuddle her and tell her she's gonna be okay, she knew she couldn't, at least not in this state. aulnoy sensed and took in the feelings of other living beings around her, which directly reflected on her state, hence why her instinct was to dart into someplace where there was nothing alive - unless you count the germs on the toilets alive. but germs didn't have feelings. at least, aulnoy couldn't sense them.
it seemed there would be no end to the ralts' wailing and crying, even though they were (or at least, rose thought they were) completely alone in the toilets. her suitcase and laptop bag were outside, as well as all of her personal belongings that had all of her personal info on them. this included her id, and while she wouldn't say that she wasn't trusting, it's not like she knew anyone present in the lobby. anyone could come up and claim her belongings as theirs. which meant that she had to fix the situation asap. which essentially meant she had to make aulnoy stop crying asap. pinching the bridge of her nose, rose took another look at her partner - while her sobbing grew quieter, it was still consistent and aulnoy barely took breaths between the sobs.
"hey," rose spoke gently, crouching so that she and aulnoy were at the same line of sight, "i know you're overwhelmed, honey. i know that you're feeling everyone in the academy right now - and i know that there's a lot of 'em. things are confusing and scary and new and I'm not sure how i'm supposed to feel either baby", her hands slowly grasped the ralts' shoulders, fingers slowly massaging the tissue there in a circular motion in an act of comfort. her left hand slid from aulnoy's shoulder to the silver soothe bell hanging from her neck.
"see this honey?" ambrosine shook the bell slightly, and this seemed to grab aulnoy's attention, "there's a reason why it's here. you can ring it if you want; no one's not allowing you to. you can ring it as much as you want if it helps you stay calm, okay?" her other hand crossed over the junction of aulnoy's neck and shoulder and ended up on her cheek, wiping away some of the tears. aulnoy's sobbing eventually turned less sporadic and less intense to the point where rose felt confident enough to pick her up, sit on the toilet and place the ralts in her lap, slowly rocking her and cooing at her.
"shh... we'll go back out once you're ready, okay? we're not in a rush." well, they technically were, but none of the things in her luggage or in this academy could ever compare in value to aulnoy's wellbeing.
"ruuu...", aulnoy whined, snuggling even further into rose's arms. rose smiled at first, glad that the ralts was slowly starting to calm down... that is, until she realized that all of aulnoy's snot and tears were getting on her sweater. reaching out to grab some paper from the dispenser, ambrosine's hands met with air and plastic. damn it. ambrosine scrunched her face in a visible display of cringe and chagrin. but hey, at the very least, there was no one else to see her and aulnoy like this. but then again, no one being around meant there was no one that could hand her tissues from the next stall or sink. the only thing she could possibly hope for now is ether someone assisting her out of the situation, or aulnoy calming down enough so that she could go and clean herself up. truly, a wonderful start of her academic education.
