Ryldree peered at Quil out of the corner of his eye when she offered the lessons on magic. It irritated him that she even offered, as always his expression was blank, after his childhood was filled with his mother pushing him to learn magic the idea was insulting. He knew she couldn't possibly know that, he just was wired right to learn magic. He knew that he would never be able to learn because he had tried so hard to learn. Useless in the long run since nothing came from his efforts and it became clear that he would never be able to use magic. Magic that he should have been able to use due to his heritage, a glaring flaw. A flaw that his mother saw as a failure and it was a large reason that she had abandoned him. Instead of outright turning her down he just offered a tiny shrug. She could take that as a yes or a no, it was up to her. To be honest he didn't have the heart to ruthlessly shoot down her offer. Closing his eyes as he took in a deep breath he started calming his mind. At the mention of family his eyes opened slightly and he peered at her once again. Family was never something that he really understood. His own had been interesting to say the least. That being said he knew that normal families existed all over the place so he could only assume that the family she referred to was one of those families. A guardian, a loving environment and a place to call home. He hadn't experience any of those things so he could only theorize what that would be like.

"I have to gather things from the forest anyways so I won't be meditating for long" he said simply. With that he returned his attention to focusing on his breathing. Only paying attention to each breath and stabilizing his mind. Allowing almost everything else to fade into the background. Emptying his mind of all thoughts and just focused in on his heart. Each breath in and out was a grounding and important step. As he allowed the background noises to fade away he made sure to keep enough awareness about him to be aware of what was happening around him. Small movements from Quil went unnoticed but if she wanted to say something else to him then he was aware enough to be able to pull out of this state to respond. It was especially useful since he knew that she wasn't going to stick around for forever so he would have to notice when she started to get ready to leave. Tiny little ideas tried to bubble to the surface, questions about non magical people and if magic could really be learned by anyone, but he squashed those thoughts. Pushing those thoughts back down and not allowing the light of day. They were useless thoughts and he wouldn't allow them to dredge up more self hatred. He had enough of that right now and would rather keep pushing it down then dealing with any of that. The only sign that he was struggling ever so slightly with meditating was a slight furrow in his brow. Otherwise to anyone who wasn't paying close enough attention it looked like he was meditating just fine, like nothing was off.

a smile grows upon her face as rhodan gets excited over the items she had brought. no one else has gotten such excitement out of the little knick-knacks she's found before. percy chuckles softly as she takes the offered blade and tests it's weight in either hand, careful to keep the sharp edge away from any bits of flesh. it felt nice in her hand and she nods as she returns it to it's sheath. "it's perfect," she belts it to her side and moves her overcoat to cover it, not really wanting it to be so obvious when she goes about town. she takes the bow next and admires the craftsmanship for a moment before slinging it over her back so the string lays across her chest. percy gives a bit of a grin as rhodan comments on the weapons and shrugs. "it's better to be safe than sorry i guess, with all these whispers i don't want to be caught unprepared." it was the truth, even if it wasn't something she wants to believe. "i don't know what's going on lately, but something isn't right." the words were only a murmur as if she was talking to herself, but loud enough for rhodan to have heard them if he was listening.

Rhodan nodded in understanding, his grin turning into a small smile of sympathy. These were indeed dangerous times, even more so than usual. Being a maiden was hard enough as it is, often pursued ruthlessly by the men of the town. While they certainly were not seen as fragile, they were strongly associated with childbearing. Whether the maiden liked it or not, she was eventually expected to settle down and provide some sons for her newfound husband. Men had it easier, only expected to work and nothing else. Rhodan noticed some movement out of the corner of his eye, turning his head to investigate. Three more soldiers were making their way towards the forge. While not outwardly aggressive, Rhodan noticed that two of them had their hands placed over their swords, ready to draw their weapons at a moment's notice. His eyebrows furrowed, the last traces of his smile turning into a frown. What did they want? Had his father forgotten to pay their taxes? Were they intending to bully them into handing over free supplies? He leaned over, whispering to Persephone as they drew closer. "You might want to leave now. This could be trouble." His father had also noticed the approaching group, now standing directly behind the boy. His hand was clasped firmly on Rhodan's shoulder, a protective undertone to the gesture.

percy could see a look in rhodan's eye as he nods his understanding, a sparkle of pity perhaps? whatever it was quickly disappears as his gaze shifts out the window over her shoulder. at the change in attention, percy turns to look as well and a chill runs down her spin upon seeing a trio of soldiers headed straight for the forge. had she done something wrong? did someone catch her slipping the muffin from the baker's tray earlier? though she had sworn no one was looking when she swiped the bit of food. perhaps she should have just paid for it. percy's attention is snapped away from the approaching armed guards and back to rhodan as he suggests she leave. his father was behind him and looked rather concerned as well, but not for her, for his son. was it actually them the guards were after? had they done something to upset a guard? whatever it was, she doesn't want to just flee like some scared maiden. "i'll stay and bare witness, witnesses tend to make them act less barbaric sometimes," she tells him with a shake of her head and moves back to stand closer to the wall and not in the middle of the room like she had been. hopefully it wasn't something horrendous, she'd hate to see her friend be dragged away in chains.

The three guards entered the building one after the other, hands still lingering over the weapons strapped to their hilts. Their eyes were narrowed, observing the small group with interest and distrust. They were all big and stocky, almost rivaling the blacksmith in size. Larger guards usually stayed at the castle, protecting the king, while the smaller ones were sent into town to maintain order. Why were they even in town? It did not make any sense. The one in the middle stepped forward, clearing his throat. "Are you Haymitch?" He questioned, directing the question to Rhodan's father. The man nodded, stepping forward with a small grunt. He seemed to purposely position himself between the two youths and the guards. "I am. What can I do you for? Does the king require more of our iron?" The guard shook his head, pulling out a scroll and handing it to Haymitch. "I'm afraid not. The king request your son's presence at the castle. He is to leave with us immediately." Rhodan's eyes widened in shock, his body unable to move. Him? Why did the king want him? Had someone discovered his secret training in the forest? Had someone guessed his true intentions behind wanting to become a guard and reported him? His mind was racing with all of the possibilities.

it was rather shocking when the guard steps forward and hands rhodan's father a scroll, claiming the king wishes to see the young man at the castle. percy shivers a little, her body reacting to an undercurrent of tension that stems from the guards. there was something not right about this. the king never wants anyone in his presence, only his guards were ever in the same room as the cruel man. it just doesn't sit right with her at all. what could he want with a young blacksmith? especially when there was an older and more experienced one to be seen instead? nothing was adding up in her mind and it gives her great unease. percy was hesitant to move from her spot by the wall, but she can't hold back her tongue. "what could the king possibly want with a blacksmith apprentice? no offense to you, rhodan, but haymitch has more experience the king could use," though she shouldn't butt into the conversation, percy does anyway. she was highly suspicious of the guards' and the king's intentions with her friend and doesn't want to go down quitely.

The guard sneered, glaring at Persehone. "I don't believe that is any of your business. Move along, little girl." His voice was patronizing and full of irritation. It was clear he did not like his actions being called into question. Haymitch growled, taking another step forward. "My son is not going anywhere. If the king wants to speak with him, he can come down off of his precious throne and talk to us here." The two other guards pulled their swords in warning. "He either comes with us willingly or by force. It is your choice." Rhodan stepped forward, looking up at Haymitch with a fake smile. "It's okay, father. I will go with them. The king may just want us to commission some new weapons for him. He has no need to pull our only blacksmith out of work when an apprentice can take his order just as effectively, right?" They both knew that was not what was happening. However, Rhodan did not want his father getting arrest on his behalf. Rhodan stepped forward, nodding to the guards. "Let's get going then, hm? I have work to do when I return."

the blonde's blood boils as the guard sneers at her and she gives him a glare that could have killed him if looks could do such a thing. she glances to rhodan and then haymitch before looking back to the guards as they pull their swords. it seems like talking won't do much good now. she glances out the window towards the forest and gets an idea, it wasn't a very smart one, but an idea none the less. percy turns back to the others and is careful to catch rhodan's eye as she speaks, her eyebrows quirking ever so slightly to give a hint of the words' second meaning. "i'll see you in a bit then, i should head back home." she doesn't stress the words much, not wanting to make it obvious that she's trying to imply something other than what she says. the guards may be brutish, but they aren't completely stupid. the girl turns and waits for the guard before her to move so she could pass before exiting the forge, leaving behind her baskets since they would only get in the way. plus she can simply get them later on once things calm down again.

percy glances back towards rhodan and gives a very slight nod as she closes the door behind her and makes her way quickly to the forest edge, but doesn't run since that would only draw unwanted attention. with a sharp trilling whistle, the sound of hoof beats are heard and the wild mare appears like she had before. percy pats the mare and murmurs soothing words to her as she dances in place, picking up on percy's unease and tension. she carefully swings herself up onto the mare's back and continues to stroke and whisper sweet words to the horse while urging her to head into the town. it was clear the horse wasn't fond of the people and sounds, not to mention the smells, of the busy town, but percy keeps soothing her. once near the blacksmith shop, she hides in the adjacent alley to await rhodan's appearance.

Quil watched intently for a moment, but as oblivious to emotions as she was, she spotted nothing of note as Ryldree thought. She noticed the expressions, but she didn't read anything worth paying attention to.
xxxx"I'm not sure how to do teaching, too well, but I think it could be good practice, anyway. You're welcome to learn with me any time." She'd taken the shrug as a tentative yes.
xxxxHer head tilted just the tiniest bit at the sudden attention when family was mentioned, just a little confused at why that would earn that reaction.
xxxx"If you want to come with me, you could. It's nice to have new people to get to know." Quil watched for a few moments, simply observing how it happened out of curiosity, wondering if how her clan meditated (and she failed to consistently) was different from how other elves might. It didn't seem that different. Of course, it was impossible for Quil to have any idea if that held up internally, but, those questions could wait for later, if he was willing to answer them.
xxxxShe turned back to her book, still keeping half an eye out for if anything noteworthy happened around her.
xxxxQuil noticed the furrowed brow, but, having no idea what it meant, and, thinking it might be seen as rude to ask, she opted for ignoring it. For now. That was another thing to add to the list of potential questions.
xxxxMeanwhile, something interesting was happening. Where Quil and Ryl were was a few streets over from the blacksmith, so she didn't spot the initial encounter with the guards. However, she did see the back of a familiar pale-haired head moving through the crowd, away from her or Dree, and that brought Quil's eyes properly up from her book for several seconds. That was Percy, right?
    xxxxMaybe she imagined it...
xxxxQuil went back to her book.
xxxxHowever, when Percy came back with a horse in tow, that really couldn't be ignored. That was note-worthy.
xxxxAs Percy went past (and the crowds reacted appropriately to seeing a wild-woman riding an unbridled, unsaddled, unshoed horse through their town), Quil leaned over to Dree, and patted him gently on the shoulder. "Did you see Percy's horse? I want to see what's going on."
xxxxSo maybe that wasn't the most persuasive argument, but between the shoulder pat, and the subsequent hurry to put everything into her bag before standing up, there wasn't a lot of room left for debating with Quil's intentions.
xxxx"Slowed down by a whole crowd of people, I doubt it'll be too hard to trace a horse through them, even if we somehow lose sight of her."

Ryldree observed Quil passively as he thought about the offer, it wasn't something he could ever anticipated. Never before had anyone invited him to meet their family, though he had just assumed that it wasn't something people did. So this casual offer wrecked his assumption. The only way he could figure that was that either nobody liked him enough to invite him, or they didn't have a family to introduce him to. If he was being honest it was probably a mixture of the two, in his mind it was the former. His expression through all this pondering was carefully neutral and it didn't take him long to respond. Only a few heartbeats, long enough to tell he was thinking it over while also not being short enough that it didn't draw too much attention. "I haven't met new people in awhile" he replied thoughtfully. It would be interesting to see what a family was like, even if it was only from the outside. It would also be quite interesting to see the people who raised Quil, to see the environment that had shaped the half elf into the person she was today. What were the biggest differences in their upbringing and were those the catalysts that had forged their personalities into what they are today? He didn't need to be told to know that he wasn't the average joe so he was very curious to see what sort of up bringing could have possibly helped his personality. With a tiny nod he tried to convey he was interested in joining her.

While meditating he had been careful to keep an ear out for what was going on around him. So he hadn't noticed the first time Percy had slipped through the crowds, her footsteps were mixed in with the everyone else. However the moment he heard the hoof beats of a wild mare his eyes snapped open. Almost as soon as his eyes landed on her he felt a pat on his shoulder. Then the sound of Quil's voice washed over the background noise, she was asking if he had seen the horse and he was given a name for the strange girl astride the horse. Distractedly he nodded while trying to track the girl and the mare. At the sounds of Quil gathering up her stuff he glanced over and followed suit. Not that he had anything to gather, he only had to stand up and pull his hood back up. His go to move of shifting into the shadows wasn't going to work this time around. He was fairly sure he would disappear from even Quil's keen eyes and while it would be ideal to hide he wasn't about to just vanish on the half elf. It was poor manners and she seemed to know the strange human better than he did. Nodding slightly towards the direction that the maiden had gone. "Lets go find out what is going on. I want to know if it involves the guards" he murmured. It was left unsaid but he didn't want to be in the dark about what was going with the guards. He was almost one hundred percent sure that if the guard was involved that he would get roped into it at some point anyways. Might as well start out with allies rather than get dragged in later without anyone to help him. Besides this half elf seemed like a good person to have as an ally and she wanted to find out as well.
