「 burning skies | plot 」

Postby Pevensie » Mon Mar 09, 2020 12:53 pm

Many years ago, dragons filled the skies of Aredon. Upon their backs were the riders, employed by King
Stefan to keep the peace. These dragons came in many shapes and sizes, as diverse as their riders. For
decades the kingdom was at peace, serving as an economic and military powerhouse. That all changed
when a group of riders, lead by Lord Asmodeus, turned against their king. They were tired of following
orders and decided to take the throne for themselves. Those who remained loyal to King Stefan put up
a valiant fight but were ultimately killed alongside him. With Asmodeus as the new king, things quickly
began to spiral out of control. He ordered that every dragon egg in the kingdom be destroyed and that
harboring one was punishable by death. He ruled unchallenged for forty long years, as no one dared to
oppose him. He had the only dragons in the land, as well as a vast army. Many commoners have lost all
hope of ever being free from this tyranny. However, all is not lost. Seven eggs escaped destruction and
remain hidden away, waiting for their riders. These riders, though they don't know it yet, hold the fate
of the entire kingdom in their hands...

"Sir, we have found him." A guard knelled before the throne, head lowered respectfully. The throne room was dark, the only light provided by torches that lined the walls. There were no windows and the walls were painted a dark grey, giving the room a very gloomy appearance. It was a long room, easily capable of sitting a thousand people, perhaps even more. A throne was positioned at the very end of the room, a dark figure sitting upon it. The dim light of the torches barely illuminated his features, the details of his appearance lost in the shadows. Even so, there was no doubt who sat upon that throne. "Are you certain?" A deep voice questioned, tone even and emotionless. The guard nodded, daring to look up. "Indeed, my king. He is your spitting image. It seems the traitor spoke the truth; your son still lives." The figure on the throne hummed thoughtfully. "Bring him to me. I should like to meet my heir."

It was a misty morning, just after dawn. Many were already awake, moving about the town as they did every other morning. The lower class citizens did not have the luxury of sleeping in, having to work from the crack of dawn to sunset just to provide for themselves. It didn't help that their "beloved" king taxed them ruthlessly, believing that economic and physical suppression would keep the peasants from rising up. Any attempts at rebellion were met with swift and brutal punishment from the soldiers. These soldiers could be found on every street corner, watching for any signs of trouble. This was the life that Rhodan had grown accustomed to over the past eighteen years of his life. As he gazed out of the forge, watching as beggars and farmers scurried past, he could not imagine the world any other way. He sighed, turning his attention to his father. The man was large and well-built from decades of labor. A black beard overtook most of his face yet his small, bright were still perfectly visible. They were a vivid shade of green, nothing like Rhodan's brown ones. The boy had always assumed that he had gotten his eyes from his mother, though this was unconfirmed. His father refused to speak about her, simply stating that she had died shortly after he was born. Rhodan had attempted to ask the townspeople about her several times but had always been met with silence. Over the years he had eventually stopped asking, accepting the fact that he would likely never know anything about his mother. Shaking his head, the boy went back to work.

Quil didn't stray into towns overly often, and she always had a good reason for it when she did. It was a very simple reason right now. Magic required knowledge, even when it was the spirits of nature guiding that magic. Most magic needed access to knowledge of ancient words and exotic languages, and while it was far easier to learn how to use magic within the forests, her mother was not the best practitioner of it, and gaining access to new spells and magic to practice required heading to towns, however briefly, to gain more knowledge.
xxxxFor Quil's magic, where she had yet to access any deep wells of magical power, or even anyone else to share energy with when casting magic, the more she knew, the more efficiently she could cast, and the more powerful she could be.
xxxxQuite literally, for Quil, knowledge was power.
    xxxxAnd she knew this.
xxxxQuil had browsed the book stalls and book shops first, and where it was possible had bartered with the owners for whatever natural resources she had that they found valuable enough. She still didn't really get this "money" thing, but they seemed to like the little magical tasks she completed for them; correcting their signs, cleaning the windows, straightening their wares, unpacking the boxes at the back, mending that wobbly table.... Most of the business people didn't want to trade for anything but money, and, for the most part, Quil respected that. For the most part.
xxxxQuil had looked in the library as well, but, as they said they needed books to be returned quickly, and she was only likely to return after several months minimum, that wasn't happening. The books she'd bought would be traded in another town to unburden the weight, once the knowledge was memorised, but, for now, she would make do with a slightly heavier bag. Most of them seemed slightly disgruntled by her arrival, but, quite why she wasn't sure. It was nice to get town things done early, when there was more time to negotiate with people who seemed to think money made sense, before their attention was divided with other people, too.
xxxxThe half-elf practically skipped out of the last store, white hair bouncing with the motion. Her bag was nearly full by now, and, certainly any more in a satchel over one shoulder would cause a very significant strain while travelling. As was, it was mostly counter-acted by her bow and quiver, but anything much more? No, thanks.
xxxxQuil had already had most of her breakfast, but she'd still got a little left, and eating it while within the town meant she'd have a little more time to look at it. She'd wanted to get to see the human settlement, and had taken the very first morning in her group's current camp to explore it. She was going to get to.
xxxxShe made her way further in between the streets, looking up at all the different buildings here, and quietly marvelling at how humans got past their weird idea of staying in one place by building these.
xxxxIt only took a few minutes for her to find a wider, open space, with a big statue in the middle. Some sort of strange mythical creature dribbled water down its front and into a pool of water around it. Quil pulled her nearly-full bag (just with books and one packet of food) off her shoulder, laying it down at the edge of the fountain, and popped herself down. She pulled the last book out of her bag, opening it up to the first page. She cracked the book open by flattening it against her chest, and laid it down against the stone. She sat cross-legged on the stone, facing towards it, paying little mind to her bag (having no concept of theft for re-sale), and pulled the rest of her food, a strange concoction of forest fruits and some sort of grain, out to eat while reading.

xx𝐃𝐄𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐋𝐒 ─ 25, asmodeus guard, ambrosia 𝐋𝐎𝐂 ─ town 𝐓𝐀𝐆𝐒 ─ rhodan 𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 ─ n/a
xxxROMAN stood tall in his armor. the metal began to heat his skin in the slowly rising sun. mist covered the town, and from his vantage point he could see the rolling hills go on for what seemed like forever. he breathed in deeply, asmodeus has tasked him with peace-keeping most recently. it wasn't like he hated the work he did, other times he'd be tasked with guarding and protecting him and his noblemen while they talked on and on into the evening and early morning, he would solemnly stand there, his bastard sword hanging at his hip for easy access. he kept his eye on the town however, knowing that violence could very quickly interrupt daily life. asmodeus hadn't been the best in terms of taxing his people most recently.

xxxROMAN knew his shift would soon be coming to an end as he saw another one of asmodeus' personal guards approach him. "you've got orders to patrol town on foot today. but be vigilant and take a stallion instead. you know how the townsfolk get." the guard laughed and slapped roman's back. roman shared the same laughter, and for once he didn't know if it were real or not. he looked over his back as the guard who appeared jolly just seconds before was now a stone statue, stoic and gazing out into the town below. on his descent down from his standpoint, he passed by the nobles who resided around the king, and plenty of the regular soldiers who were employed to stand guard. he easily found an unassigned stallion, saddled him up and mounted him.

xxxFINALLY out of the confines of the castle, roman trotted into the town square. other soldiers were loitering around, hidden in the shadows of houses, shops and buildings as the sun rose. picking a street at random, roman steered his mount down one of the busier streets, but as it was one of the smallest, he was forced to dismount and tie the horse's reigns to a post where another horse stood. he saw a bakers cart and openly swiped a small bun, flipping back a coin that absolutely did not pay for the bread at all. he had immunity in these streets, being one of asmodeus' personal guards meant unwarranted protection, as long as he maintained his claim that he only supported the king, and not a rebellion that grew in his kingdom. he ripped part of the bun off and swallowed it whole, eager to have something in his belly for the day ahead.

xxxROMAN passed other stalls and shops, mainly book stores and grocers. he almost passed arguably the largest shop on the street, the blacksmith, but with the king's hunt taking place soon he figured he'd fashion himself with a new bow, made by a lad paid the bare minimum. he entered, boots crushing into a small puddle on the way in. inside a boy worked, no older than eighteen. "oi lad!" he called, voice gruff. "you'd not suppose you sell bows 'ere?" roman continued to eat his roll.

Rhodan looked up from his handiwork, eyes landing on a palace guard stuffing his face with bread. The guard was young, only a few years old than himself. He was easily over six foot tall, almost as tall as his father though not as built. His dark hair and eyes framed a squared jawline. He was everything expected of a man, handsome and strong. If only he weren't a guard, the girls would have been all over him. Rhodan had to hold back a distrustful glare, his mouth pulled into a hard line as the guard shoved the last of the bread into his mouth. He doubted that he had payed full price for it. The guards were known for taking whatever they wanted, not having to worry about consequences because of their positions. It disgusted Rhodan to no end. While he had been training to be a guard himself, it was for entirely different reasons than most. He wasn't looking for power; all he wanted was to free the kingdom from the tyrant that had seized it all those years ago. He stepped forward, forcing himself to smile as he took off his gloves, shoving them into the pockets of his trousers. "You've come to the right place. We've got several in the back that you can take a look at." He turned, leading the way to the storage room. His father watched silently, giving him a look as they passed. He didn't need to speak for Rhodan to know what he was saying; be careful. The storage room was small and cramped, weapons lining the walls. Crates and shelves of supplies were scattered throughout the room, leaving little room left to move about. "Is there a certain kind you are looking for? Heavy or lightweight? Long distance or short distance?"

xx𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐄𝐏𝐇𝐎𝐍𝐄
i. percy ii. 25 iii. female iv. forest dweller v. rider of lilura vi. hetero vii. single

x─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

the white-haired girl was up doing chores by the time the sun was high enough to wake the town nearby, tidying the cave she calls home and tending her garden. the herbs and vegetables she grows were plentiful enough to take to market and sell or trade with, but not nearly enough to open her own stand in town. percy loads up two baskets, one with herbs and produce and the other full of other items she has gathered such as bones or pretty stones, and whistles for her mare. it takes a minute for the wild horse to heed the call and approach, but percy was use it and waits patiently. once she appears, percy puts a thickly padded blanket over the mare's back and carefully drapes the baskets over top, the rope tying them together into a sling settling nicely on the padding so it doesn't hurt the mare when traveling.

percy swings herself up onto the mare and gives her a pat before directing her towards town. the ride was quiet and smooth, not what most would expect out of a wild horse with it's own mind, but percy has a special friendship with the mare which some people seem to envy from time to time. once at the town gates, the mare halts and percy slides off before turning and gathering the baskets and blanket. she pats the horse's neck before it trots off back to the forest and percy heads into town, the baskets draped over her shoulder and the blanket tucked under her arm. she spends the next hour or so traveling from stall to stall, trading her produce and herbs for other items such as bolts of cloth or bits of leather. there were countless stalls selling trinkets and things, but percy has no interest in things she can't use in her daily life in the forest. what good is a pretty necklace when she hardly mingles with anyone to show it off?

once she has finished going through the different stalls, percy takes a moment to look through her gathered items and nods to herself a bit before heading to the blacksmith's shop. she had placed an order for a short sword and a bow nearly a month ago and was curious to know if it had been finished yet. many people wouldn't expect such a small woman to want a sword, but living alone in a forest has it's dangers and she'd rather be prepared than wishing she had been. percy smiles a few greetings as she walks down the street and carefully ducks into the shop, but pulls up short when she sees the gleam of armor standing at the counter being served. the woman was a little hesitant to enter, not really wanting to deal with an arrogant guardsman, but she needs the short sword. percy clears her throat a little as she enters the shop, not wanting to startle anyone, but mostly the guard.
"good day, i'd like to check on my order if it doesn't trouble you?" she directs her question towards the large blacksmith standing nearby, rhodan's father, but her eyes cut briefly over to glance at the guard and rhodan as they talk of bows. "i've brought you some good wood and bone as well, for handles or what have you." she lifts the basket and places it on the counter for the man to dig through. "there are a few stones if you're wanting them as well." not many people can find what she can in the forest, especially since most of it comes from her 'tamed' beasts who bring her shares of their dinner or random objects they find.
