In the warm everglades of the south is a tribe of mermaids known for their predatory ways of life, these mermaids are odd, with razor sharp teeth and reptile-like claws; able to hunt the largest of crocodiles and alligators. One day the girls discover human explorers intruding on their land.

With rifles loaded and adventure in their hearts, these
men went seeking glory and instead found defeat. Mo
nths away from their home and any civilization, their
only choice is to move forward; deeper into the unexp
lored everglades. Once miners, carpenters, and lumbe
rjacks, these burly men are used to the outdoors yet n
ot even they could be prepared for what lies ahead. A
once healthy collection of around sixty men and wome
n, the group has since dwindled due to illnesses and un
expected weather leaving only twenty-seven of them b
ehind to continue the journey. Looking to settle, it was
just their luck that they stumbled upon the southern w
etlands - too stubborn to turn back their only choice is
to face off against the water maidens and cross the ev
erglades.

Less like maidens and more like beasts, these mermaids are a horrific yet mesmerizing sight. With delicate faces and small frames, their silhouettes easily trick men into thinking they’re stranded young women in need of help. The perfect bait. Waist down are large scaly tails that are nearly twice as long as their upper body, and incredibly muscular. With scales of neutral browns, greens, and blacks, sometimes the rare copper or gold, they easily blend into the murky waters they swim in. Going undetected except for the occasional dorsal fin few mermaids have or the glimmer of scales beneath the water. Their tails aren’t the only thing that separate them from humans; along with the occasional pectoral fins climbing up the outside of the water maiden’s arms or the dorsal fin trailing down their spine, they also have webbed fingers and large reptile like claws that are strong enough to pierce both alligator and crocodile skin. Their faces are mostly human-like, or rather goddess-like due to their beauty, but similar to the reptiles of the land, they have two sets of eyelids. The first set, the outer one, is the same as a human’s; made of skin and close top-to-bottom. The second layer is clear, helping them to see clearer beneath the water and protect their eyes; they close back-to-front.

within these warm southern waters tempers are easily
flared and for these already vicious mermaids it could
mean death. although they are aggressive and willful
they have come to value the relationships they share
inside of the tribe. they might have the capability of
hunting alligators and crocodiles but they have come
to recognize the job is a lot less dangerous when they
hunt together. fights do break out between the water
maidens every once in awhile but they have a strong
bond with one another and aren't afraid to risk their
lives to defend the tribe. due to their unwillingness
to battle with one another their queen and princess
manage to hold their positions for awhile. of course
the positions can always be challenged during a new
moon; the strongest and most brutal rules.

leaving their homes to find better lives, they headed south
where the lands were still uncharted. dreaming of starting
anew, many have come to regret their decisions. resentful,
paranoid, and exhausted; this group is slowly falling apart.
needless to say tensions are at their highest. now that they
have arrived at the everglades the group has run into a new
form of obstacles that they might not survive. the alligators
and crocodiles have already managed to devour two of them
yet what they fear the most are the creatures that lurk just
below the murky water's surface. No one has yet to see the
beasts but already five men have been yanked beneath the
water, never to be seen again. all attempts to make it past
the everglades have ended in failure, the only option seems
to be turning around but a majority group is too stubborn to
even consider the choice of fleeing from the danger. With a
brutal and prideful man leading them, their fates have been
sealed. Setting up their tents a mile into the everglades, the
leader has sent out three of the weakest members to scout
ahead and discover a way forward. keeping the group under
control with fear, tensions are rising as the explorers begin
to form groups; some who choose to follow the leader that
is bringing them to their dooms and some who are choosing
to create their own fates.

the everglades are dark and mysterious; a place where no man should dwell. most of the land is submerged in murky water and the very few pieces of land that there are tend to be marsh. a variety of creatures thrive in this hot climate including crocodiles, alligators, deer, herons, venomous snakes, catfish, sunfish and even panthers just to name a few; a truly fearsome ecosystem. even the flora of the everglades is vast. sawgrass, orchids, duckweed and lily pads are just some of the few plants thriving in this domain but what truly dominates the land are the cypress trees and mangroves. these two tree types tower over the land; their roots transforming the depths of the water into a maze. for miles and miles the everglades continue on, easily trapping people inside it forever. at the heart of the everglades and the only distinct land feature is a large bald cypress tree that towers above the water at over 46m. below the surface the roots continue growing down; mapping out the waters beneath it. overlooking all the other trees around it, you can see the tree from nearly everywhere in the everglades. under the tree is an underwater cavern formed by the roots and it is here where the mermaids nest.
