1394 AA / Present Day
His eyes were wide and bloodshot, darting in the direction of the slightest sound. I watched as he stood there, picking at a scab on his left elbow, tapping his foot, and fidgeting impatiently. From the east, a short man, no a dwarf, comes into view. The man flinches as he sees him. He seems hesitant, but does not appear to feel threatened by the short being before him. The dwarf begins to talk in low grumbles, inaudible from my distance. I lean in closer, my foot squishing against the mud as my weight shifts. Reluctantly, the man pulls something from his pocket. It is a small vial filled with a glowing blue liquid: magic. The dwarf seems pleased at the sight of this. He reaches for the vial but the man jerks back. The man begins speaking quickly, but is cut off by the clean slit of a dagger through his throat. I turn away. I need to get out of here, but I stand too quickly and slip on the wet soil beneath me. Thud. My body tenses, heart races, and I hear the sound of blood pounding in my ears. Did he hear me? I peek around the corner and he is no longer there. He must of fled after taking the vial. I let a small sigh of relief escape me, but as I turn my head back around, my heart drops. Standing before me is the last thing I will ever see: the twisted smile of a magic-thirsty dwarf.
