It is the height of the 16th century, and the governments controlling the New World have suddenly become much harsher and more strict. These governments have placed a complete ban on piracy and buccaneering, condemning multiple ships and crews to certain destruction. For some, this ban makes the thought of the life of a pirate all the more alluring. For others, pirates have always been a source of discomfort and disgust.

One night, after spending some time at one of the taverns, you meet the captain of a ship called The Chimera. After talking for a while, he invites you to join his crew of delinquents, and is allowing you one night to think it over. Will you join his ranks to sail the free and open ocean, or will remain in the city, land locked and caged?

-Lets keep our posts literate, shall we? Posts should contain proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation (some exceptions to this will be character accents and minor mistakes here and there). Each post should contain at least three complete sentences.

- Character Reservations and Applications. All character reservations and applications should be sent to me (Chicanery). NO character forms should be submitted to the thread until they receive my seal of approval. Reservations will remain valid for two (2) days, after which the position you reserved will be put back on the market.

-What Do I Need To Include In An Application? Within an application, I (Chicanery) would like for you to include the character's name/nicknames/alias, age, gender, role, physical appearance (images and written descriptions are both fine), personality, weapon of choice, and back story (including original economic class).

-Women On-board? I am going to allow very few women within the crew, mostly because it would be extremely unrealistic for them to be there. This is not a viking roleplay.
[EDIT] | 10/13 -> I have changed my mind on this rule. Women will be allowed on-board, but they MUST cross-dress and act to protect their "secret".

- Powerplaying. There is likely to be quite a bit of fighting, so I would like to say that you are not allowed to kill/seriously injure another person's character.

-Four Characters Per Person. You don't have to have four characters, but four is the maximum.

-Moderators. Currently, there is only one moderator present in this roleplay, and that would be me (Chicanery). If you would like to be a mod, feel free to PM me.

History

xxCaptain Reyes was born to a family of semi-wealthy merchants that were living in Spain at the time. His family
xxconsisted of his mother, father, two older brothers, and a younger sister.
xxWhile his oldest brother took on the family trade, his other brother was apprenticed off to a blacksmith, his sister was
xxpreened to be married, and not long after his fourteenth birthday, Tatton found himself being apprenticed to a sailor.

xxNot even a month after their departure from the Spanish port, Tatton's ship was attacked by pirates, and he was
xxspared and taken captive. From there, he became a cabin boy.
xxSlowly but surely he gained the trust of his new crew-mates, and acclimated nicely to a life of piracy. He proved to be
xxa fast learner, and climbed the ranks quickly- from cabin boy to rigger, and from rigger to boatswain before he had
xxeven turned seventeen. By the time he was eighteen, he had advanced to a position as first mate, and was a
xxpromising aspect for captain.
xxHe spent two years as first mate before, the captain before him retired, leaving him as Captain Tatton Reyes.

Wide set and slightly narrowed, a dull mint green colour.

Face/Skin:
Fair, but tans easily and rarely burns. Minor acne scarring on face and many assorted scars and calluses on her hands. Cecily has high cheekbones and a strong jaw, accentuated by a long nose that is slightly bent from being broken one too many times. If she tried, she could have a semi-feminine appearance, but luck is on her side. Paired with a gravelly voice, she could pass as a pretty boy.

Hair:
Coal black, kept medium-short in a braid tucked under a hat.

Build:
Tall for a woman, she stands at 5'7, and is rather slim and wiry for the man she pretends to be, which allows her to easily manoeuvre herself around the riggings. She is skinnier than average, even for a woman, due to a lack of food. She is muscular for a female, which makes for easy climbing. Her muscle has been gained mostly by climbing through windows and running from the law.

Personality:
Stubborn, headstrong and impulsive, Cecily is definitely a firecracker. She is extremely hot-headed and loves the adrenaline of a good fight. Due to her upbringing, her primary weapon is a knife or dagger. She is most comfortable in close range combat. Most of her opponents have been the type to choose a big, bulky weapon to boost their male pride, so in close quarters she has a decided advantage over swords. She's never really been one to have friends, preferring to guard her secret with her sharp tongue. She figures that her best defence is her skills. Nobody would suspect her of being female, because no man would confess to being bested by a woman.

History:
As her last name would suggest, Cecily is the daughter of a baker, from a small town in the middle of nowhere. She was beaten regularly for the slightest of offenses, and starved for three days if a loaf of bread burnt. When she was eight years old, the tiny building that doubled as their home and shop burnt down in the night. Both of her parents were either smothered by the smoke in their sleep of burnt to a crisp. Either way, they never made it out alive. Cecily had not been home at the time. She had been in the neighbour's house, stealing whatever trinkets she thought could sell as a means of escaping the hell of her home. Nobody ever found her. She was assumed dead with her parents, her tiny bones turned to dust. A grave in that town is dedicated to the eight year old girl who never truly died. As it turns out, she was hard to kill. She walked to the next town over, sold what she could and plodded on until she found a large city. There, she started a heart-pounding, adrenaline filled career in thievery. It was when she was nine that she started to disguise herself as a boy. The streets weren't safe for little girls, no matter how nimble or clever they were. In the years since then, Cecily has been in more than her fair share of both scraps and proper brawls, as well as a good deal of run-ins with the law. She's fended off five attempts to take her life, until she robbed the wrong merchant, who now seeks his revenge. She took to the taverns and shipyards to hide, and will continue hiding until either the merchant gives up or she dies.

Nicknames: Beta or Shark
Age: "I'll just tell you I'm 20, that's more believable..."
Gender: "Incase you can't tell, honey, I'm a guy."
Sexual Orientation: "I may joke around with the guys but I love the ladies."
Job Position: "I may be a shipwright but I'm also an excellent swordsman." In this case he'd be head Carpenter.

A very laid back character that is sometimes mistaken for a slacker. He doesn't usually let petty things get to him and will take a beating if he thinks the fight is simply not worth his energy or is over something completely stupid but mess with the few he calls friends or his crew and you will get a barrel or sword to the face. Though he likes double wielding swords mostly he is also very capable of defending with his tools and his own body/fists and feet. Though he will back up his crew he will encourage everyone to fight their battles like a man. Even if he isn't the captain he won't allow anyone in the crew to belittle him in any way, or call him fish boy. He is an avid swimmer, daring to jump overboard during raging storms or a swarm of sharks to get things like shipwrecked supplies and live victims, hence his alias "Shark". He will dive to check local reef heights and even hunt under water, having good lungs to stay underwater for about twenty-five minutes at a time, always striving to remain longer then before. He only has one scar of a shark bite on his left forearm, which he then ate for dinner with the help of some natives on an island he landed on. One thing he doesn't stand for is mutiny and will stand up with or without the captains orders unless held back.

Been to a vast part of the sea for his young age, he tells that he used to be a former captain but since he lost everything in an unspoken battle, has no more interest in being captain for the time being. Most think their lies but he always seems convinced its true. In truth he had been for a year after the former captain had died of disease and left him in charge because of his ability to always think things through clearly no matter how stressful the time proved to be. After a year the crew broke into a heavy civil war. Most of the men had turned against and in the end, in order to survive in the middle of the ocean, he stood as the last man standing. That taught him to learn pretty much every job on deck and below in order to get to where he is now and the main reason why he has zero tolerance for even a hint of mutiny. After reaching the area he did whatever needed to be done to live but never over did his crimes, unless they where fun like stirring up the guards or something. Deciding he no longer wanted to be a captain he thought to try out for a crew mate.

Weapon of choice: Dual blades (any so long as they match), 8 pistols he usually has strapped on himself (four are single shot located at the front of his custom shoulder holster.
Build: His muscling is very lean, part of what makes him a supurb swimmer, and when wearing clothes others mistake him for a scrawny weakling.
Hair: Dark dirty blond but uses a natural dye to color it kelp green, "simply to be different." Its a bit lengthy but layered so it almost never passes his shoulders, the front it longer for bangs, reaching up to his chin.
Skin: Very fair, if not pale in complexion.
Eyes: A bit strange, golden cream like pearls.
Height: 5' 10"
Weight: "Come on now, there's no way I gotta worry about this, mate..."
Attire: He prefers to be barefoot and shirtless but has cliché pirate boots and a slightly frilly shirt just in case their needed. He's quite comfortable with loose jeans with pockets attached and occasionally wears cargo shorts. He also owns a military heavy coat that he took from a captain, a trophy from a duel. His only trinket is a hemp woven choker that sports a pearl in the center, something he never takes off.

Nickname: Tommy or Snake
Alias: Tom Finnegan
Age: 34
Gender: Male
Role: Civilan/Tavern Owner
Weapon of Choice: Musket behind the counter, more in the back, and two pistols on his hips. He also has two pirate sabers hanging as "decoration" behind the bar. Although he likes his toys he prefers to try to use brute strength first.

Physical Appearance: He has a rough conformation due to his past life but does his best to look clean. His black shoulder length hair has silver strands along the sides from age and is usually pulled back in a low-set ponytail. He has a lock beard, when mustache and beard connect, with the center showing a silver strip. It's kept clean cut and tidy. A rigid body consisting of thick muscling with quite the intimidating face, he has large hands that can bear the weight of his strikes. At a mountain 6'3", not many try to oppose him in his own shop. He wears commoners' shirts, usually white or off-white, and dark brown breeches. Out of habit he keeps his pirate boots though has a fancier pair stashed away. His exposed skin is a bit dark from years of exposure to sunlight, the rest a lighter tan, and his eyes are a rich brown. His body is also littered with battle scars.

Tommy loves to laugh and exchange jokes. He doesn't always take things personally, especially if someone is trying to make a joke of him. He'd rather piss 'em off by going along with it. He has little worries, mainly because he knows he can be difficult to overcome. He always keeps his tavern clean and tidy as he likes keeping his customers around, mostly pirates among them. He lets fights break out but as soon as they start to break things he throws them all out and stands at the door till their done settling their dispute. He may be nice but he also has a tolerance level. Being a bartender for many pirates he also keeps his ears open for all sorts of conversations and whomever pays the right price can hear him repeat the rumors.

Starting his pirating career at the young age of 6 by his father's side as a powder monkey he learned quickly the cruel truth of the world and the true corruption of the navy. Generally sons weren't allowed to board ships but his mother had left them and as his father became a first mate, he was allowed to be an exception. Never taking his life for granted he learned a few hard lessons and throughout the voyages and climbed the ranks moderately as he aged. Though he was given the chance at Quartermaster he declined to remain as the Gun master and A.B.S. by the age of 20. Five years later the captain perished and he left, later hearing that one of the men took over. After that he decided to settle down after meeting an old pirate who owned a tavern in another town and liked the idea, it was the right mix of settled civilian with the familiar touch of piracy. Taking the same route he built The Drunken Sailor and began his own business.
Another part most don't know is that he had served under the Pirate Captain Ridgeback, whom was executed on his own ship by the navy after the fight over false accusations. During his last years he also met Beta a few times and taught him three simple words in wrighting, "spy", "target", and "run".

Name: Jack "Calico" Rackham

Role: Quartermaster

Appearance:

Personality: Calico Jack is an affable joker, with a confident demeanor. A fighter, a player, a pirate. He's loyal to his Captain and Crew, and loved by his men, his women and his ship.

Weapon: He carries two single-shot pistols (drawn from the hips), and two cutlasses (one drawn from the left hip, one drawn from the left shoulder). A simple but effective load-out for a Pirate.

Backstory: Jack grew up in Nassau as a frequent drinker, where he pieced his outfit of mixed Oriental, Indian and English prints together, and earned his nickname. He learned Pirating from Charles Vane and served as his Quartermaster for a time, after Vane's death, the crew wanted Calico to be the new Captain, but instead he sold the ship and disbanded the crew, returning to the drink of different cities in the West-Indies. Now, he's the Quartermaster for The Chimera, and a feared Pirate throughout the Caribbean.

Role: Master Gunner

Appearance:

Personality: The Stag is a gruff, no nonsense man who speaks with a thick Jamaican accent. He's affable to people in passing, but really disdains most people who aren't above his rank. His sense of loyalty is extreme.

Weapons: The stag wears a Bow and Quiver of 17 Arrows (Some of the arrows are poisoned or made of flint for fire). He has a short cutlass worn on the right hip, for left handed sword play. He also has two single shot pistols on holsters strapped to the small of his back.

Backstory: As a boy in Jamaica, Liawanda took up gunsmithing as a hobby and then an occupation, but for food, he hunted with a bow, and learned how to craft those, as well as their ammunition. As a teenager he was noticed for his skill by the master gunner of a piarte ship called The Queen Anne's Revenge, and asked to come aboard and be the understudy to the master gunner. He accepted and even though he still prefers to fight with a bow, anyone would be hard pressed to find a man better at understanding and constructing the engineering behind cannons and firearms of any kind.

"Why don't you find out for yourself?" With a nasty temper and a reputation for striking out, Jessamine is one most tend to keep away from. She tends to remain quiet, not using her voice to speak, but rather actions that she hopes most of the crew understand. This young lady is not the most loyal or truthful with all the secrets she hides under her coat. She's very territorial about her space when she needs it the most and doesn't like to hang around people much. To most she is known as the dark shadow with the feisty temper, but to those few who have earned her respect, she is quiet and kind, patient even. There aren't many who'd know her in that way, however.
Jessamine likes to test others on their skills and their personality by throwing a situation at them and seeing how they'd react. She seems to get satisfaction on their poor reactions, just waiting for someone to slip up, but honestly, she tests people so she can grip a bearing of who that person is and whether she may be able to trust them or not.
Loving the sea and the thrill of thieving in the night, Jessamine is loyal to her pirate being and likes to climb high on the masts and far out to the edge of the boat just to get a better taste of the salty wind. It's one of her quiet places where she can be alone and be herself and not Thomas Samuel. Her one dream is to become free of her chains and the dark secrets she hides, even deeper than the ones she's shared here.
