all the hats and scarves in the world couldn’t have prepared alyssa for the biting cold that greeted her upon venturing out of that haven of wonderful warmth otherwise known as the inside. don’t get the wrong impression; it wasn’t that she would prefer to stay in her dorm while everybody she knew was watching the gryffindor/slytherin showdown — she wasn’t a ravenclaw and her idea of a good time definitely didn’t include studying — it was simply that the blonde didn’t cope well with cold, and she didn’t much fancy the concept of shivering like mad while she stood around and waited for one of the seekers to just catch the damn snitch already. now, the story would be different if it was her up there scoring goals; adrenaline had a way of chasing away the miserableness she would otherwise feel in such temperatures. but nowhere in this match was hufflepuff involved, and so al was stuck watching a game that not only had nothing to interest her personally, but was taking place in her least favorite weather. honestly, if it weren’t for her best friend serenity suggesting that she come, there might actually be a chance that al would still be in the school, holed up somewhere cozy and sipping hot chocolate. that was one of the benefits of being a hufflepuff; the location of the entrance to their common room meant a convenient proximity to the kitchens, provided that you knew what to do to the painting under the great hall. the fact that she did was what made it possible for her to be having this fantasy in the first place. it definitely took her mind off of what she was currently doing— shuffling after serenity as the other girl scouted out a few seats for them.░

xoxoalyssa cast a sideways glance at annabel, who had accompanied them both. something in her had a deep-rooted mistrust of slytherins and she couldn’t say that she held many amiable feelings toward the brunette, but neither did she get on al’s nerves. so there was that, and there was also the part about her not knowing annabel well at all. but if serenity liked her, then there was no reason for alyssa not to give her a chance as well.
xoxoshe was thinking of something she could say to initiate a potential bonding experience when a casual movement of her eyes toward serenity up ahead came just in time for her to witness the other hufflepuff collide with jinx, the sixth year ravenclaw with a reputation for bad luck and a nickname to match it. the two didn’t like each other — she understood that it had something to do with boy troubles, or so she’d heard — and, not about to let her friend face a rival alone, alyssa picked up the pace. but by the time she got there it looked like things had sorted themselves without her, and so she squeezed past the trio of ravenclaws without a confrontational word.
xoxo“sorry, it’s too cold for me to function, much less do anything like be able to see,” she said as she took her place at the spot that serenity had found for them, barely casting a glance at the scoreboard. rubbing her arms in a futile attempt to gain some warmth, she instead ended up settling for pulling her hat down around her ears to conserve heat and giving herself an appearance rather comparable to that of a turtle retreating into its shell. at the shrill screech of the ref’s whistle, however, she winced, ears ringing. “on the bright side, it looks like I can still hear pretty well. hey, something’s going on.” al scanned the sky, counting seven players in red and seven in green. nothing seemed amiss, which made it all the more curious. “none of the players are hurt, there’s no reason for the ref to call a break.” she craned her neck along with the rest of the crowd, searching for the possible cause of the disruption and tugging at serenity’s arm when she pinpointed it. “look, down there—” she pointed. “the professor’s saying something. it looks urgent, do you think something might have happened?”
