it was obvious from the moment that his lids fluttered open from a night of hard drinking, his
temples throbbing with the futile promise made by any survivor of a friday night of 'never again',
that it was going to be a bad day. with a few curses caught in his breath yet unable to escape
past the sore throat, eli rolled himself from the security of his blankets, bare feet hitting the
hard wood floor witha clumsy 'thud'. in this blurs of his fatigue, the clock on his bed side blinked
an ominous 13:04. red for danger. his curses finally broke their silence, erupting into the
serenity of his apartment like a gunshot in the night. beyond his open bedroom window, san
francisco had long since begun its day-time routine, whilst eli was cocooned in his bed, letting
his job opportunities slip away along with his intoxication.
after going about his morning/ afternoon routine, being chastised by a very angry assistant at
the electrical store - he had not got the job, surprise surprise - and sitting through three highly
critical, highly disappointed and highly expected phone calls (two from the father, one from the
mother), eli had decided that it was just not his day. with the clock now ticking 15:29 and eli
having yet to make decent human contact, it was decided a frappuccino was the cure to his
rapidly developing migraine.
barely half an hour later, the adolescent was standing in line in one of san francisco's sixty
starbucks coffee shops, hands shoved in the pockets of his worn jeans and his eyes downcast,
their lack of their usual blue-grey gleam betraying his lack of sleep. the late-january weather
beyond the floor-ceiling windows of the dainty coffee house was mild: overcast and cold enough
for a scarf. timed seemed totick by as slowly as the phone conversations with his parents had
as, one by painful one, the line trickled down until he was at the counter, ordering a warm
beverage to calm the static that was slowly rising along his skin. it was when he realised that
he was a dollar short that it began. that the static began to feel more like little lightning bolts
burning his bones. as much as he pleaded, the cashier was determined to leave him without a
much-needed, highly-desired caffeine source. eli could feel it; the familiar sensation of
electricity pouring from his fingertips.
it was the hand of a man in a charcoal suit that broke his control. the firm grasp of a caffeine-
deprived business executive pushing him from the line which caused eli to turn, fist colliding
with the man's jaw. it was at impact that the light bulbs burst, glass shattering. every fuse in
the shop melted; every socket sparked from a voltage it was unprepared for. and eli did not
even glanced around. he did not even check for their safety. no. he did want he always did in
the face of trouble. he grasped the coffee cup that was awaiting claim on the counter, ignored
the middle-aged man rubbing his jaw, and ignored the blatant gapes at his receding back as
he jogged from the starbucks shop. his heart was thumping in his chest, adrenaline coursing
through his body as he weaved through the crowd, wanting to put as much space between him
and that coffee shop as possible.

xxxxxxx the young man flinched, his body heaving the slightest jerk and eyelids fluttering rapidly before parting to reveal dilated vivid blue irises. finn gasped quietly and took hold of the closest thing to his proximity: the smooth metallic surface of the desk inches in front with strained fingers, easily creating irreparable dents that echoed the clear shape of his fists and all ten of his digits, as well as imprinted fingernails. he sat in the up-right position for a good five minutes, merely staring directly ahead - ignoring all peripherals - yet not seeing anything in particular. his heart rate had accelerated during the quick moments; his mind a speedway for distorted images and blurred shapes. he had a million thoughts, yet could think of absolutely nothing.
xxxxxxx deep breaths soon relieved his speeding heart, allowing the teenager to gather his bearings enough to come into complete consciousness of his surroundings. dreams like these were common for him; more often than not, finn would find himself woken in the same state by something, with most metals laying around having been uprooted from their places in some way or flung into random locations. however he'd never particularly been able to pinpoint exactly the cause and had slowly came to terms with it over the years, always able to deal with the aftermath and clean-up the best he could. thankfully this time, most of the damage had been bestowed on the unfortunate desk he fell asleep on the night before - the frame now supporting massive indentations and misshapes in addition to him having unconsciously ripped out chunks of the edge that fit into his closed fists near perfectly.
xxxxxxx it was then when an annoyingly shrill buzzard soaked the mid-day quietness in an abrupt motion without resistant, immediately catching finn's attention. disregarding the handful of metal, he cringed at the utterly obnoxious sound and quickly grabbed for the iphone laying haphazardly a couple feet away, dismissing the alarm as well as inspecting the half-drained battery and latened time blinking on the top of the screen. letting out a displeased sigh, the brunette decided that it was time to actually start his day with something productive. he pushed himself up with more ease than he would have had he dozed in a bed, arching his back a couple degrees and taking notice of the satisfying few crackles that could be heard before headed into his bedroom for the usual morning routine. finn soon found himself standing at the doorway at the end of the hall leading out of his apartment, fixing the stiff collar of his black coat before opening the door and bracing for the chilling winter winds that automatically sent shivers down his spin even through all his warm layers. his disregarded his car, rather, in favor of traveling on foot the short distance it took to get to a deli for his much-needed afternoon sandwich.
xxxxxxx the walk had been a relatively short one - having already been able to place an order after a meager twenty minutes. however the activity on his way out had captured and held his attention as he caught sight of a small uproar gather around the starbucks cafe just down the street. the image of the coffee shop through the glass windows were a dimmed black aside from the natural light shown from outside. many excited discussions could be heard as he quickly made his way near the establishment as well as noises of chaos and disruption seeing how many people simply didn't know what to do in their given situation but was simply too curious to get in on the action to actually let it be. finn himself was apart of the many that were lead by their impending curiosity as he simply wanted to know what exactly was going on. his answer came as a bit of an unexpected slam from a young man pushing his way past, the impact nearly causing finn to collide with the stranger coming up behind him from the unanticipated force. he did, however, catch himself and recovered quickly, spinning around once he realized the familiarity in features of the person that shoved him in their haste to flee. "eli!" he exclaimed, quickly jogging after the recognized acquaintance. once caught up, he stopped the other male a reasonable distance away from the scene and turned to him expectedly before asking, "what did you do now?" it wasn't meant to be a straightforward accusation, however knowing the other boy, finn was able to put two and two together fairly quick.
