◔̯◔Thomas felt with his hand around in the dark until he found his bedside lamp switch. He looked around his room, blinking his eyes trying to adjust to the sudden brightness. When everything seemed to fall into the same familiar blurred view he almost automatically felt at his bedside table for his glasses.."Were is the stupid thing.." ..But then he remembered - contact lenses. ..great..this is harder than I thought.. Is it really necessary to put it in at this time of the night?.. But he knew sleeping was not an option. So discarding the lenses he turned and stood up from his bed - making his way over to the desk. On it stood a black box which looked as it is supposed to carry something confidential, but, by lifting it up the box revealed a rat's cage inside. "..cant' sleep buddy?" Thomas asked the rat which was perched inside the wheel - looking up at him with his beady eyes. Thomas invented the black box - which is soundproof to keep out the noise the rodent makes at night when running on his wheel. The box also has a small fan inside to keep ventilation. And a small generator which the wheel connects to, it can work up enough energy to charge a phone battery. Since Fred has to earn his keeping. Thomas smiled as the animal climbed off his wheel and put his two front paws against the cage railing. "Want to get out you?"He felt with his fingers until he found the latch of the cage, and opened it up. "There you go, you rodent" Fred scrambled out and into the faint light of the room - looking for his own kind of adventure. Thomas slumped down into his desk chair with a 'Sigh' - rolling his head backwards - trying to get the strain out of his neck. It seems so quite in the room suddenly - as if he could hear his own muscles twitch. His lack of sight made the place feel suffocating. ...Is it always going to be like this? ..over thinking in the middle of the night?..You know it can't change anything Thomas... He thought to himself. He dropped his arm unto the Desk - when it suddenly hit something, he heard it clatter to the floor. "Oh no.." Already guessing what it might be, he bends down to pick it up, and when he touched it his hand confirmed the form of a small metallic bird - his invention. It is an alarm really, and by going off in the morning in activates a movement which sends the bird up into the air, and fluttering down again, all while singing a rather annoying song. A small rocking motion makes it keep its balance when landing. Almost in the fashion of a wagtail. The point is to catch the tiny bird first before you can stop the alarm.
Thomas is rather proud of this little piece of art he made. It is almost like the bird got a personality by now - as if he raised it as a child. But it can not love me back.
He suddenly felt eerie. ..Robots loving back..That is just wrong. You can't make anything love you..Just can't. He fiddled with the tiny bird in his hands, turning in over. ...There should be something though...That makes animals...people love each other.
Thomas felt awkward with himself just then. "Better find that rat of mine.." He mumbled. Turning around, he stood up and slowly walked around the room to keep his balance - whistling. "...were are you buddy? ..time to put you back now, you.." He heard something that sounded like a marble roll across the room - and then the rat scrambling after it. " Fred? Come here you rodent - fre" the rat bumped into something with a thud , and then something started to rattle. " Hey, that's the mirror - Fred!" He quickly made his way across the room and pushed his two hand palms against the mirror to prevent it from falling over. It stopped rattling. Relieve washed over him..Fred scrambled up his legs and perched on his shoulder - leaving the marble in peace. " There now, you silly - almost made the ol' mirror crash to the floor did you? Now that would have raged mom, wouldn't it you rodent you?" he petted his one hand over Fred's back, stroking him. Fred didn't answer. Of course he wouldn't. Thomas felt a pang by hearing his own loud voice echo through the basement room. The contrast of the sound against the silence suddenly felt awful. He realized his one palm was still pressed against the mirror. He looked at the reflection it made in the faint light. ..Why does it still feel so familiar..after all this time. Thomas can't make out the rest of his figure - it is as if his arm is cut off on the other side, or the rest of his body is under water...he stared at the strange illusion..and felt so far away. Then hes blurred sight gradually cleared up - as if his eyes only opened now. And it opened to a clear, blue sky..
