"yeah well there's a lot of things in life that we wish wouldn't happen or we think shouldn't ever happen, but they always eventually do. it's not like there's anything within power to stop it, so i just learned to not fight it." i shrugged, keeping my gaze down. i was a fighter when it came to mine or someone elses life being at stake, but i knew some things had to be let go, and that i couldn't change them. no use trying to fight a battle that you know you're going to lose.

Kacey slid into the drivers seat quickly, opening the passenger door for you. She stuffed the back pack over the head rest of her seat and watched it fall to the ground but land on it's base in the rear view mirror. Kacey wouldn't start the vehicle until she was inside, to stop the interior noise of anything that could possibly turn on would not go out over the dead silent streets. Kacey sighed, leaning back, sliding the key out of her back pocket and putting it into the ignition.

as the other girl got in, i did as well, lowering my head and blinking. i'd never ridden in a car before. the space was tight but i could breathe, and there were four, maybe five if you count the trunk, escape routes. also i could smash the windows if i ever needed to resort to that. i took the snapped pieces of wood and held them in my lap, my thumbs created small circles in the smoothed bark. i momentarily lifted my gaze, just to look out in front of me, before dropping it to my lap again.

Kacey glanced over at her, reaching up and retrieving a dark pair of sunglasses from the visor above her head and then reached over to your seat and put down the arm rest in the middle of the isle, creating her regular driving atmosphere. Kacey didn't bother with a seat belt, she didn't mention it to you either. She started to drive down the long empty street. Kacey reached with her free right hand and turned on the radio, but after hearing it was static she pressed another button that played a C.D. Maroon 5, her favourite American music group. A depressing but meaning full song was first. "Come away to the water" was what it was called. Kacey put the sunglasses over her eyes when they turned past a red light and stop sign and the sunlight came over both of their faces.

where i trained my eyes varied, but i never looked to the girl driving. i blinked when the music began playing, tilting my head some. the only music i'd ever heard was on a record that my grandmother had played a while before she died, a song i never bothered to remember the name of. i lowered my head to where my hair fell in front of my eyes when the sun shone on me, my eyes glittering brightly from the rays. i was getting slightly antsy from the whole prolonged exposure to an enclosed space. "how much longer til we get there?"

Kacey glanced over at her, then out the window. "Five minutes" She said quietly, looking back out the wind shield. "You don't like cars much do you?" Kacey leaned back, her left and on the wheel, her right hand in her lap. Kacey glanced around, she didn't have to pay much attention to the road, no cars, no law, no driving problems. Her car was completely filled with gas. .

i shook my head a bit too roughly, curling and uncurling my fingers. "claustrophobic," i said quickly, pressing my lips into a thin line as i stared out ahead of me, eyebrows furrowed. five minutes. five.. five. no. more like five years.
