-----Kasey normally woke up in a comfortable queen sized mattress in her dad's house, but this morning she woke up in a mattress that was so firm it was uncomfortable to lay on. She was in a hotel and the room had been paid for by her father, a rich businessman in the upper class area of New York city. The girl groaned and sat up in her uncomfortable bed, and rubbed her lower back where her discomfort was the most. After a while of grumbling about crappy hotels, Kasey had finally worked up the willpower to get out of bed, and get changed into a gray, frilly tank top, a light brown pull over, jeans, and boots. When she was finally dressed, Kasey spent a couple of minutes fussing over how to wear her hair today. Did she want it up, or down? What about curly, or straight? Maybe a bun, no a braid. Kasey finally became so fed up with her hair, that all she did was run a brush through it, and pulled it up into a simple bun.
-----It was still a bit early in the morning, and Kasey had swore to herself not to eat the hotel's food. It wasn't that she was too good for the food, it just didn't taste very good, and she had nightmares thinking about how unsanitary it may be to eat food that sat in a freezer for weeks. The cafe it was then, she thought to herself shivering at the thought of the horrid food. Kasey grabbed her items she always did when heading to cafes, a book, her phone, and a small purse, just enough to keep her phone, wallet, and a few makeups in. It was nothing extravagant, yet it wasn't dull. Not modest, but not near to being showy. Somewhere in the middle, rather. Before she could forget, she checked her phone for any calls or texts, and her screen came up empty. Kasey gave the smallest sigh of relief, she wasn't really feeling up to talking [or texting] anyone after her poor night of sleep.
-----When the brunette girl had made it to the cafe, she walked up to the line, and waited for a couple minutes until it was her turn to order. "Macchiato. Please." Her voice had a hint of a Mediterranean accent, she had picked it up from her birthplace in Florence, Italy. It wasn't as thick of an Italian accent as it was when she had first moved to New York with her father, but whenever she got mad or flustered her slight accent became a lot thicker. Kasey was always aware of it, and each time she talked to a stranger with her accent, she blushed, a bit embarrassed and afraid that they'd call her out on it, causing her to answer questions she really didn't want to answer. Thankfully, Kasey was given her cup without being questioned, and she took her seat towards the back of the cafe, and pulled out her book. Every couple of minutes she would alternate between taking a sip of her macchiato and reading her book.

crashing at james hyland's
crushing on kasey calvanese
Rain. It pelted down from the sky, plummeting to earth but he didn't really care. Nobody cared much about anything anymore, especially the lonely man still lost in his sleep. His eyes fluttered open and for a little while he forgot where he was, who he was. Until it all came back, he was Oscar. And he was free, released from the seemingly endless horror of being sent from foster home to foster home. He sat up and ran his strong olive toned hand through his brown hair, a smile of disbelief. Yes, he was making it own his own and he had a friend, James. He was lucky to have been allowed to stay at his place, at least until he himself found work and earned some money. He recalled hearing something from James about that cafe he went to, they might have jobs on offer and it was close which was a bonus since he didn't own a car. Come to think of it there wasn't much he did own and money was constantly on his mind.

He walked out and up to the table, rubbing his sleepy eyes and yawning. He smiled at the note his friend had left him, of course he had gone to get coffee. It was his common thing, it also meant that James had stayed up most of the night writing, again. It was an unhealthy habit and he never got nearly enough sleep but who was he to say? Oscar's opinion meant nothing in the world. He managed his way over to the fridge to scrounge for food, he had to eat something. After some complicated decision making he finally pulled out a couple of eggs and found the frying pan easily. As he got out the olive oil he imagined the fried eggs, yum. So perfect for a depressing morning like this. He'd never liked the rain, it had meant that as a child he'd have to stay inside with the people he hated most though there had always been the option of locking himself in his room. On days like this he drew, sketched out flowers and castles and imaginary worlds. Something far away from where he was. Oscar couldn't help but think of it all as he gently cracked the eggs on the side of the pan with his strong hands and turned on the elements. Patience had never been a strength of his but he managed as finally the eggs were ready. He grabbed a clean plate which there were few of and dumped them on it. He sat down awkwardly at the table and ate in the silence with a fork and knife of course. The hot food burnt his tongue but he was starving and couldn't care less as he shoveled it in. It was heaven.

After he'd cleaned up he found his suitcase and just grabbed a clean white t-shirt and some casual jeans, alright, so it wasn't nice enough to make a good impression for a job but he didn't own any really nice clothes. Another thing he had to remember, to put on his to do list. Being a grown up was so hard, he wished he could be a kid again. But he quickly turned away from such a thought, no, it was much worse back then. Who wanted to relive their nightmares? So he grabbed an umbrella and left, locking the door behind him. He carried his sketchpad, a few pencils and an eraser in his pockets, his stupid old phone and of course his wallet. He whistled to himself as he strode into the rain, listening as it bounced off of his canopy. Rain could be beautiful but he'd never seen it, never dared to look at it. Whenever it rained he would always feel betrayed, betrayed by the sky which knew so well what he hated. The only one that understood as it watched, blue eyes always open until the night came. He closed his umbrella, spraying tiny droplets everywhere as he entered the cafe. His blue eyes scanned the seats and he saw James and was about to walk over to him when he saw her. Kasey. She is beautiful and he couldn't help but stare for a little too long, he ended up sitting at the back. Away from her but still close. He pulled out his pad and began to sketch, of course he wouldn't talk to her. She'd end up thinking he was some weirdo and anyway, he didn't exactly want to speak. He just wanted to enjoy this place, luckily not too many people came here. He could definitely not deal with crowds. He'd worry about asking for the job later, he wasn't even here for coffee or a drink. He was just here, a loner, an outsider. Sitting.

-----The opening of the door was announced by a bell up at the top of the door, and she didn't think much of it until she had the pressing feeling that someone had been [or was] watching her. Kasey looked up from her book, and scanned the crowd at the cafe, none seemed to be watching her. When her pale blue eyes were done searching, they were enthralled by the rain. She'd always liked the rain, it was cool and soothing, and the sound of it always managed to calm her when she couldn't sleep at night. Her eyes drifted to her wrist watch, checking for the time, and when she found it she went back to reading. Not yet late enough to leave for sightseeing, she thought to herself, and drew her legs in closer to her, feeling a little chill in the cafe. She drew her yellow pull over closer to her, hoping for a bit more warmth to be offered from it now that it was pressed against her.
-----Now that Kasey had finished her macchiato and a few chapters from her book, she debated what to do next. She could order another cup and continue to read, but she grew tired of the scenery. Maybe walk around outside for a moment, no; it was raining. There was always the hotel room to go back to, but she didn't want to go back until about eight o'clock tonight. Kasey then looked around the cafe and noticed that a few people had company, and wondered if she should try talking to someone, but then quickly stomped the thought out with the single notation of 'but I'm shy'. She sighed and rubbed her face, with her index finger and thumb, feeling a bit distressed about her current predicament. The girl settled on continuing to read her book until the rain let up, so she could wander about the city.

JAMES HYLAND
• male • 25 years old • the writer • crush: theodora may rose •

__________________________________________________________

Regardless of how little sleep he got, James was always content the morning after a writing breakthrough. Today was no different than any other. He spent a good amount of time looking over what he'd written, typing down a few notes and ideas on how to proceed with the novel until he saw Oscar walk in. He'd been prepared to greet him, when the other man changed course and sat by the back. Near a girl. The same girl that he often caught his friend stealing glances at. It was blatantly obvious that he had eyes for her, but like himself with his own 'girl troubles', had never made any sort of move. He contemplated for a moment. If he couldn't fix his own problems, maybe he could help someone with theirs.

He closed the laptop momentarily, deeming it safe to leave it there for the time being. He got up and made his way over to the table where Oscar sat and spoke before he could even take a seat across from him.
"I've been writing," he started. Obvious, of course. He slid into the spot at the table. "It's about a guy. He always goes to one particular café, but never orders anything. Just longingly stares at this one girl. And, one day, said guy's friend decided to order said girl's regular drink. The drink is then given to the girl by the friend, who tells her it's from the guy. It's a great conversation starter, and they both got married, had six kids, and lived happily ever after. Good talk, kiddo." With an amused snort, he got up and ruffled Oscar's hair before he could protest. The exchange at the counter was brief. James was way too shy to confront his little feelings and crush just yet, so he ordered a Macchiato, like he'd heard the girl ask for many times before.

With the drink in hand, he headed to Kasey's table, where she was sat reading a book.
"Hi. Sorry to interrupt. My name's James. And- this drink is for you." The writer gave a brief smile before setting it down on the tabletop. "It's from that guy over there. His name's Oscar." He gestured toward the boy still sitting awkwardly alone with just his sketchbook. "He was too shy to give it to you personally, but I think he'd really appreciate a personal thanks."

-----Kasey had just started reading her book again when someone set a cup down on her table. She hadn't ordered anything, which caused confusion as to why she was being given a drink. The girl set down her book and looked up at the man who had set their cup down on her table. When he said that it was from his friend sitting a few tables away, Kasey's gaze followed where the man had pointed, and found a man with short brown hair that was attractively messy, a white t-shirt and jeans, with his sketch pad laid out in front of him. She looked him over for a few moments, before looking back up to the man who had set her drink down on the table. "Thank you." Kasey was very soft spoken, and her accent made her a bit harder to understand, especially since she was a bit shocked, and shy herself. She'd been courted by men before, but they usually came to her themselves, and not through a friend. This intrigued Kasey, causing her to think he'd be worth a visit, but she was so shy, and almost never started conversation by herself. Just a simple hello should be fine, Kasey thought to herself.
-----First she gathered up all of her things, her book, her handbag, and then pushed in her chair in that she had been sitting in. Kasey slid her book into her handbag so she wouldn't have to worry about loosing it, and grabbed the macchiato that had been left at her table by Oscar's friend. During the short walk to Oscar's table, Kasey had a thousand thoughts rushing through her head, unsure of what to do. She could just say thank you and leave, but she wanted to talk to Oscar, yet she was so shy. For twenty insane seconds, she pulled the chair out that sat across from Oscar, and rested in it. Kasey set her cup down, crossed her legs close to her under the table, and latched her hands together under the table. "Hello."

O S C A R | C H A R T E R
crashing at james hyland's
crushing on kasey calvanesence
Oscar was lost in his own world, the lines swirling across the paper in a magical display. The pencil just flowed, like his hand wasn't even controlling it at all. The familiar voice of James broke him from the dream like daze he was in and he glanced up at him. He didn't speak, his curiosity getting the better of him as he wondered exactly what he'd been writing about. But as his friend talked he couldn't help but feel he'd heard the story before, and them it hit him. That was him with Kasey. And did this mean James was actually going to go up and interact with her? For him? He was just about to open his mouth when his friend finished his quick speech and then he felt his hand ruffle his brown hair, as if it wasn't messy enough.

Mystified by how confidant James seemed as he strode over to the girl, Oscar watched. He wished for that bravery, to just be able to talk to people normally without making things awkward. But after having rare interactions with others his whole life it was so difficult, he had never really talked much. To make a point, a statement that he never wanted to be at those foster homes. He hated the hand life had dealt him, it made it so hard to do things that for many came naturally. But he was strong enough to struggle through the challenges set before him, surely he'd be able to speak to Kasey. He wanted to, he really did want to get to know her and thanks to James he would be eternally grateful.

Then he froze in realisation as she walked towards his table, this moment was his. He just hoped he didn't screw it up. She was an angel, gracefully sitting down across from him. A single hello made a small smile flitter across his face. "H-hello. As my friend probably told you I'm Oscar. What's your name?" he honestly had never found out her name, he wanted her to tell him herself, he didn't like snooping around about people. Anyway, he liked the mystery of discovering it himself. This was the first step towards interacting with her, meeting her.

[Sorry for not posting. I was really busy.]

-----Kasey watched him for a moment, before he finally said anything. She listened to Oscar talk, liking the sound of his voice and taking note that he had an accent like he'd lived here all his life. When he smiled, she smiled back, and tapped her fingers on the table lightly, not hard enough to make a loud and annoying sound. When he had asked her what her name was, Kasey sat straight up in her chair and said, "I'm Kasey." She let her eyes wander, taking in details of him, and then she noticed a drawing pad.
-----Suddenly much more curious than she initially was, Kasey looked at the pad trying to figure out what he'd been drawing. The lines were smooth and attractive to look at, the edges were defined but not sharp, and the tone of the drawing had a professional aura about it. "Do you draw professionally?" The Italian accent slightly twisting some consonants and vowels that the American accent doesn't.
-----The girl blushed a bit, upon realisation that she'd been staring. She made no effort to apologise though, and pulled her eyes from the drawing back up to Oscar and waited for an answer.
