scarlet found her old house quickly enough- she hadn't stepped foot in it for two years, of course, but her memory wasn't that bad. she hesitated at the bottom of the brick steps, couldn't help but feeling like she was intruding. that was stupid, of course- it was her house, it belonged to her parents. of course, an annoying voice sang at the back of her head, it was never quite your home, was it?
x"shut up." she snapped, then looked around almost fearfully. oh, sure, she could admit to herself she was crazy but god forbid that anyone else found out. she pushed her hand through her hair, took a deep breath, and pulled the door handle down.

it opened, shockingly, but then again her mother was probably at home when the adults disappeared. scarlet stepped over the threshold, left the door open behind her, and took her first steps into the house in two years. it was still meticulously clean, most of the surfaces still so shiny that it made her eyes hurt. she was about to move into the living room- see if that godawful family portrait was still hanging pride of place above the fireplace- when her eyes caught on something on the mahogany, rich brown side table. it was a photo of her- coates her, disowned her. it was the school portrait, taken on her second day of the first term spent there. she blinked and picked it up, holding it close to her longsighted eyes. she wasn't smiling- of course she wasn't- and her mouth was set in a firm, unassuming line. not very attractive, but still. it was on the table, with other pictures of her. it was such a cheesy thing, probably a fake thing set up by her parents so their rich friends would think they still cared about her; but she still felt tears prick annoyingly at her eyes. with a sudden snarl, a sudden burst of anger, she threw the photo on the ground. the glass smashed, tore the photo to shreds, and took some of her palm with it.

the pain brought her to her senses slightly, and she looked around with a gasp for breath that she didn't know she was holding. what was she so angry for? why was she glaring at the photos like she wanted to murder them? she buried those questions, as she always did, at the back of her mind, out of sight. instead she walked back outside, sat down on the cold brick of the steps, and cried. for the first time in what felt like forever.

when pretty much half the population disappeared, luke's life had, by all means, been saved. that's what he was thinking, anyway. he'd annoyed one of the guys he worked with in the subway store. they were in the back room, an enclosed space, and the dude had raised his arm as if to hit him. luke reacted the only way he could- hitting first and hitting harder. that, admittedly, had been a mistake. the guy looked up, murder in his eyes, then he'd disappeared. poof. around the same time as alarms started going off in the dining part of the store. he'd gone out. no one- at least no adults. kids were already running past outside. he blinked, nodded, and quickly started filling up on the sandwiches displayed on the glass counter. no time like the present, and at the present he was hungry.

now, he was mooching around the plaza, just outside town hall. he'd missed the grand procession, where, apparently, coates kids had swanned in and basically taken over. that didn't sit well with him. like, if anyone was going to be taking over, it should be him. he had more real world experience. he left school at sixteen, worked three jobs. he deserved it, and he was going to let whoever this drew guy was know. as soon as he came out of town hall. now, luke sat beside the fountain, head resting against the cold stone, and listened to the chaos going on around him. well, not so much chaos anymore- groups had started to form, a big one near the end of the plaza that even seemed to have coates kids. weird. not wanting to think too much about it in case his head started hurting, he closed his eyes and rested his head on his hands, by all means looking asleep.

I smile skeptically at her. She looked like one of the depressed types. I cleared my throat and shrugged mainly to myself. "So, I'm assuming you didn't win?" I joked. A flicker of a friendly smile came to my lips. "And yes, to answer your question," I said, brushing back my bangs. "I have heard of him before. And I'm not so sure I trust him or any of his followers." Yes, that was meant to be implied. She was obviously a Coates kid and every one of them were with him or were with him. Still, she could be a spy of some sort. I finally gave in though. "I'm Ashland." I said but didn't dare shake her hand. I stuck my thumb out, motioning over to the group. "My sister will keep you nice company." I knew this redhead couldn't mess with my sister even if she was a daredevil. So, with that, I walked past her down the street to the way home.

“And how exactly do you know that someone has powers? Unless it’s you of course.” A small chuckle emanated from the back of my throat at that, nearly inaudible and I was sure that besides myself only Hannah-Nora would be close enough to catch it. I never did get a chance to reply though as Kayden cut off our short-lived argument with a “Stop fighting girls.” Which exacted a slightly louder laugh and a small grin from me. Before long though conversation was just whirling around me as plots and plans came into play and I just stood there, a small scowl returning to my face, skateboard held lazily under my right arm.

Shayne seemed on board with going in as a group. Hannah-Nora’s ego was puffed up worse than a rooster and she was trying to bark orders to everyone. I was probably going to have to get her to just calm down, I mean she was my problem after all. Then she mentioned something about shooting me, and then shooting Drew and another laugh rolled out of me. So this girl could be funny if I managed to bury my fuming anger, not that I ever managed to stay angry for too long anyways. It came up that the two other girls had powers, and so did their sister who was currently a hostage.

“Good to see someone had faith in us,” I muttered a little more bitterly than intended at the Army Girl’s comment that we couldn’t do this because we weren’t her. She didn’t know us though, didn’t know what we could do. I was a good knife fighter, a really good one at that, I’m fast, light on my feet and I had electricity at my finger tips as well. Not that she was ever going to find any of this stuff out about me anyways. Seemed like she didn’t want my help, not that I blamed her I didn’t exactly look like a great team mate and mostly I was just here out of curiosity rather than out of the good of my heart anyways.

Ashland seemed to have a big plan, Shayne wanted to know if we had powers, but everything was still moving too fast for me to really get a word in edgewise. Powers were laid out and it seemed like everyone’s cards were on the table. Then Ashland spun on heel and took off, just like that. There was another voice, calling to us. Another girl. I craned my head to look over my shoulder. Oh, her. Aspen, I’d seen her at Coates earlier that day but she’d already been intercepted by Ashland, who didn’t seem keen on letting her past. I shrugged it off, turning back to the group.

“Alright, so it seems everyone cards are out but ours,” I grinned at Shayne. “I guess I can go first.” Mine wasn’t exactly something you could see though, maybe in the dark but it definitely wasn’t dark at the moment. Instead I closed the gap between myself and the shorter boy, poking him in the side of the face my index finger and allowing a small amount of electricity to jump from my body to his, sending a jolt throughout his body. Enough for him to know he’d been electrocuted, but not enough to severely hurt him, although I assumed it would hurt regardless.

I stepped back again. “Essentially what I have is...electrokinesis. I control electricity. You remember the power surge at Coates?” I arched an eyebrow. “Well, that was me. I didn’t know what it was at the time but I’ve pretty well figured out how it works now.” for a moment I turned my back to the other boy and with my free hand I reached into my backpack, withdrawing a couple chocolate bars from one of the side pockets and offered them to Hannah-Nora. She was probably hungry and didn’t exactly seem like she knew how to cook, plus she’d wasted her chips in the store. “Eat up.” I said then once again turned back to Shayne expectantly. Although at this point I was half-expecting a punch in the face.

Hannah-Nora wasn’t having much fun. Well, fun as in gunning down this stupid lama who thought he could rule the world with just one ear-piercing cry of a dying ostrich. She looked over at Cloud, as if to ask what he thought of it. Then she sighed, denying herself of the childish boredom of picking her nose, and, getting up on her tip-toes—which didn’t provide much extra height, as she was barely 4’3” or whatever— whispered to Cloud. But she made sure not to touch him, sure that there was a distinct space between them. So, she was kind of half-whispering, half-shouting. Loud enough for everybody to hear. “Why don’t we just go kill him ourselves?” She frowned. “We’ll get it over with, quick and easy. He won’t know what happened. Why make it complicated with all of these tactics?! This is just injustice if you’re just going to lock him up in some stinkin’ cell! He’ll break out with that ostentatious little power of his!” Sure, perhaps she was just a half-witted Jamaican-Indian tomboy with a shaved head, but she was proud of it. And how dare anybody criticize her plan, because, frankly, it was better than Ms. U.S. Army’s! Plus, it would get the job done. What harm could it be? And what was everybody else doing? Sitting here and talking about their feelings? Oh brother, she would have to reshape them into an army. She could do it! She had seen Bruce Willis do it once! All she needed was a cup of coffee and a rifle. Then, the world would be under her command.
She was about to start rambling off other things with her chubby little fingers, but then an boy a little older than her walked up. She stared, unfazed, completely masked in fury that somebody dare interrupt her spew. “Yesss?” She purred through gritted teeth. Oh, how these children were getting on her nerves…
Rumor has it that Drew is sending a mutant out of town because she murdered some kid! He has her locked up in a cell right now!” Hannah-Nora waved that off, turning away. Who cared? She didn’t! She had to stick to this group, break out that one deaf girl…
She whipped her head around. “A mutant girl? Drew? Thrown out of town?” The boy nodded hesitantly, perhaps a little panicked at her… well, intensity. “It’s going to happen tomorrow, at 1:30, I think… the middle of the plaza.” He glanced uneasily at the other older kids and then simply walked off.
Hannah-Nora turned harshly on the other kids in the group and began to name things off her fingers. “I want snipers on every roof! I don’t care if we have to send in the entire army, we are getting this girl out and… and… and I am going to eat a pop-tart, so behold!” But then Cloud pulled out the chocolate bars and she hesitated, glancing up at him. Did he really care that much as to give her a chocolate bar? Well, she didn’t deny herself of this, but took them, perhaps slightly savagely in a child-like way, and began to stuff it in her mouth. The silky chocolate melted on her tongue and in a moment or two, it would help fill that hollowness in her stomach. But as much as she tried, she could not shake off the warm feeling in her heart.

He was unprepared for her sudden actions. He was moments from using his power on her when he remembered his plan to keep her in a perfect appearance.
Drew reached up and wiped the glob of saliva from his face with a clean swipe of his hand. He cleared his throat, rubbing his hand on his side. "Now, let's act civilized, don't you say?" He said coldly to her. He paced for a moment, walking around in a small circle around the room, behind her, studying her, taking her in. He stopped abruptly in front of her, his cold snake like eyes sinking deep into hers'. "Nicolette," Drew started, lacing his fingers together behind his back. "I want to know about your sisters. and you, also. i've read, in your files, that you have a special ... ability." his eyes flared dark, tilting his head slightly, his dark hair brushing across his shoulder. "please tell me about it." he stood back, leaning against the wall, looking her over, a slight smirk spreading across his face. he could tell by just observing that she was terrified. he could almost see her trembling, though she was hiding her fear and showing strength. he knew she'd be a hard one, but with gary's help, she'd be cracked within an hour. drew pushed himself from the wall, giving a slight tilt of his head, before saying, "wait a moment," and then disappeared out of the room. he wandered in the hall and came to his office which was now a bit destroyed since the other redhead had broken the door. great. he stepped inside, over the mess and looked at the back of gary, his geek. "gary, i need you to do something for me."

Once I got to the house, I went into the bathroom and stripped off all of my clothes, leaving me in front of the mirror in only my bra and panties. To start off, I went to my hair. Only having the scissors and razor to work with, I started hacking at my long hair until it was short enough to shave down. Once all of my hair was at the floor in a heap by my feet, I decided to look in the mirror. A slight fuzz of brown hair was left and that was it. "Well, well, we don't all get to look like princesses." I mutter to myself as I start roughening up my face a bit. Making it more guyish. Obviously I can't make myself male, but I removed all traces of makeup and tattered at my eye brows a bit. There was nothing else I could change. The mouth looked like a girls', eyes, jaw. I rummaged through some things until I found a bandage and put it on the bridge of my nose.Good enough, I tell myself, as I inspect my reflection in the mirror. I looked a bit like a guy, not being too girly pretty in the first place.

Now, for the rest, well, I knew the chest would be something hard. I wrapped a leather strips all around my chest and to my hips tightly so my female 'looks' wouldn't show. After that was done, I covered myself in full baggy clothing. I picked some of my dad's clothing, getting his pants out which were entirely too big, tightened them with a belt, a bulky shirt of his, and to finish, I grabbed a larger pair of boots to wear. I sat down in a chair at the kitchen table, kicked off my boots and slipped into the others. They gave me a few good inches of height so I was about 5'7" now instead of 5'5". After this I went out into the garage, grab the feed scooper, fed the chickens outside, milked the goats and fed them, and then was off down the road. So, because Teresa wasn't here to yell at me, I decided to steal one of her horses and take them for a ride. It would be a lot easier and faster to get to town. Walking into the field, I get up onto Honey, one of her favorites, and ride off down the dirt road in a trot.
After a while of riding in slow walks and fast runs, we finally get into town. I pull on the reins when we get on the outside of town and hide the horse there so nobody will find her. I start in a jog, running down the street to get to the group as fast as I could. Soon after looking, I spotted Kayden, Cloud, and Hannah-Nora in the group where I had left them. And then the redhead. But another boy too. I frowned, crossing my arms. I slowed my pace, walking slowly and cautiously toward them. "So, who is the guest?" I asked, putting on a deep guy voice which I actually sometimes talked in, cocking an eyebrow at them.

            KAYDEN PIERCE
enhanced memory ○ sixteen ○ female
            ⋯⋯⋯ ⋯⋯⋯ ⋯⋯⋯

It’s basically needless to say that nothing -- and I mean nothing -- is going according to plan. I frown when the kid mentions Drew bringing out some girl accused of murder. There is no doubt in my mind that it’s Nicolette. Getting Nic out will be easy, of course. Even more so if Ash would let me go in there with a .40 and a silencer, but I know that would never happen. However, there’s a bigger move here and I can feel it. I stand up, start walking aimlessly one way, and then turn back and back again. Putting the fact about the whole powers dilemma right out in the open was a risky move for Drew. Strategist Kayden gives me a good slap across the face and then I get it.

"That genius," I whisper. I look up at the others, trying to hide my envy of this guy’s cleverness, but there’s really no use. "By accusing a kid with powers of killing another kid... that’s a huge riff between the normal kids and the ones with powers. And if he claims to not have a power..." My mind is spinning too fast to fully explain exactly what Strategist Kayden is saying to me, leaning back in her chair with a knowing smile on her face. "I think a war just started."

            GARY BELLMAN
            sixteen ○ male
            ⋯⋯⋯ ⋯⋯⋯ ⋯⋯⋯

I frown down at the papers in my hand, furrowing my eyebrows in concentration. With slow precision, I stack the files carefully; making sure each one is perfectly inline with the preceding file. To make a long story short, I go through all possible precautions to avoid the dreaded paper cuts. The tedious task would annoy any other person without Autism to no end. That is how those foolish people get paper cuts, isn’t it? This is one of those few times I’m glad to be Autistic.

I don’t look up as someone comes into the room. I can sense it was Drew anyway. And the way he says that he needs my help, it has a particular ring to it that I know all too well. I look up to his shoulder, a little below my eyelevel. "Drew, I told you," I say, "I don’t like hurting people. It’s not nice. People shouldn’t hurt other people just because somebody else wants them to. That applies to King Drew as well. And, yeah, I know about that. You’re very easy to read." I laugh at that last part. Only for a moment. I can feel his boiling thoughts. Slowly, I nod, knowing my only other choice is suffering that I just can’t take. It’s hard enough to just listen to Mars’s thoughts about what he’d do to me, but to go through it in real life? I’d rather obey Drew any day, but it’s not like I’d tell him that. "Okay," I say quietly. "Take me to her."
