✂ SCARLET ✂
mood: emotional, thoughtful
tagged: open
health: slight wound on her palm
ooc: oh gosh this post is mostly character
development ignore me omg
I SEE THIS LIFE
LIKE A SWINGING VINE
SWING MY HEART ACROSS
THE LINE
IN MY FACE IS FLASHING
SIGNS
SEEK IT OUT AND YE
SHALL FIND
OLD, BUT I'M NOT THAT OLD
YOUNG, BUT I'M NOT THAT BOLD
AND I DON'T THINK THE WORLD
IS SOLD I'M JUST DOING
WHAT WE'RE TOLD

- scarlet found her old house quickly enough- she hadn't stepped foot in it for two years, of course, but her memory wasn't that bad. she hesitated at the bottom of the brick steps, couldn't help but feeling like she was intruding. that was stupid, of course- it was her house, it belonged to her parents. of course, an annoying voice sang at the back of her head, it was never quite your home, was it?
x"shut up." she snapped, then looked around almost fearfully. oh, sure, she could admit to herself she was crazy but god forbid that anyone else found out. she pushed her hand through her hair, took a deep breath, and pulled the door handle down.
it opened, shockingly, but then again her mother was probably at home when the adults disappeared. scarlet stepped over the threshold, left the door open behind her, and took her first steps into the house in two years. it was still meticulously clean, most of the surfaces still so shiny that it made her eyes hurt. she was about to move into the living room- see if that godawful family portrait was still hanging pride of place above the fireplace- when her eyes caught on something on the mahogany, rich brown side table. it was a photo of her- coates her, disowned her. it was the school portrait, taken on her second day of the first term spent there. she blinked and picked it up, holding it close to her longsighted eyes. she wasn't smiling- of course she wasn't- and her mouth was set in a firm, unassuming line. not very attractive, but still. it was on the table, with other pictures of her. it was such a cheesy thing, probably a fake thing set up by her parents so their rich friends would think they still cared about her; but she still felt tears prick annoyingly at her eyes. with a sudden snarl, a sudden burst of anger, she threw the photo on the ground. the glass smashed, tore the photo to shreds, and took some of her palm with it.
the pain brought her to her senses slightly, and she looked around with a gasp for breath that she didn't know she was holding. what was she so angry for? why was she glaring at the photos like she wanted to murder them? she buried those questions, as she always did, at the back of her mind, out of sight. instead she walked back outside, sat down on the cold brick of the steps, and cried. for the first time in what felt like forever.

- when pretty much half the population disappeared, luke's life had, by all means, been saved. that's what he was thinking, anyway. he'd annoyed one of the guys he worked with in the subway store. they were in the back room, an enclosed space, and the dude had raised his arm as if to hit him. luke reacted the only way he could- hitting first and hitting harder. that, admittedly, had been a mistake. the guy looked up, murder in his eyes, then he'd disappeared. poof. around the same time as alarms started going off in the dining part of the store. he'd gone out. no one- at least no adults. kids were already running past outside. he blinked, nodded, and quickly started filling up on the sandwiches displayed on the glass counter. no time like the present, and at the present he was hungry.
now, he was mooching around the plaza, just outside town hall. he'd missed the grand procession, where, apparently, coates kids had swanned in and basically taken over. that didn't sit well with him. like, if anyone was going to be taking over, it should be him. he had more real world experience. he left school at sixteen, worked three jobs. he deserved it, and he was going to let whoever this drew guy was know. as soon as he came out of town hall. now, luke sat beside the fountain, head resting against the cold stone, and listened to the chaos going on around him. well, not so much chaos anymore- groups had started to form, a big one near the end of the plaza that even seemed to have coates kids. weird. not wanting to think too much about it in case his head started hurting, he closed his eyes and rested his head on his hands, by all means looking asleep.
