Mildred glared, her robes falling neatly over her knees as she shifted on the broom, sitting sideways as if riding sidesaddle on a horse.
"Saving your *ss apparently," she answered bitterly. She looked the girl over; she hadn't really taken the time to look her over before. She was a Gryffindor, and not only a Gryffindor, but one from the Quidditch team. With this new realization, she snorted, giving a little smirk.
"Why don't you move off my Pitch, hm?"

    {ooc: Guys, please keep in mind that the first years have not been sorted yet, and Quidditch practice has not been set either. We're still working on getting all the characters to Hogwarts (which would be nice if we can get it done within the hour), which means there is no Quidditch or any other activities going on at the moment other than conversing, and heading to Hogwarts. Thank you.}

Raising her eyebrows, Shay scoffed at Sam's apology. "Assuming I'm not skilled enough to avoid a Bludger, that is" she said arrogantly. It was, though, rather refreshing to hear someone apologize so easily like that. Definitely not something she was used to.
"Here's a free tip for you," she said after a moment of consideration. "Never apologize to a Slytherin. Unless of course you want to be judged as a weakling and harassed for the rest of eternity." Actually, now that she thought about it, that perhaps wasn't the best idea after all. "Ignore what I just said. Simply scope out who has the connections that could wipe you off the face of the planet. And avoid them." Grinning to herself, Shay recalled a similar conversation she'd had with her father. 'Shay, remember this. Wherever you go, find whoever has the most power in their families and get as close as possible to them. Marry them. I care not. You must understand that connections are everything in this world.'

[[so it's fine if some of the characters have reached hogwarts and start getting off the carriages right?]]

Samantha Monroe ~ 16 ~ Gryffindor

"Oh," Sam nodded slowly as if she understood why. She didn't have much experience dealing with Slytherins, and it seemed their morals were quite different to her own; she'd have to keep in mind that Shay was a Slytherin every time she talked to her. Her own parents were never the kind to give lectures and advice, so long as she stuck to the whole 'treat people as you would want to be treated' thing, they didn't really have much else to teach her. Unlike Shay, apparently, the status of the people she met didn't bother her at all. She had friends from both ends of the spectrum - wizard to muggle - and it never occurred to her to treat them different because of their 'connections'.[/center

Quinn continued to sing softly to himself, a song by... Ed Sheeran, was it? He wasn't sure. 'The ginger one' was what he usually referred to this artist as. He scoped out a fairly empty carriage and climbed into it, his singing ceasing as he offered a friendly smile to his company. At least they were people he recognised; at least fifth year and above.

[short post. apologies. they'll be longer once he has company c: ]

Seeing as Sam looked more than a little confused, Shay decided to switch topics. Unfortunately, as she wasn't the best at thinking up topics, she settled for staring their surroundings. Abruptly, she realized that they were nearly at the castle. In fact, she could see a few of the first years walking towards it, presumably from the direction of the lake. "The first years are already going in." she said, breaking the short silence between them. More first years were appearing now, some looking at the castle in awe, others walking with a nervous gait. "That one over there looks like he's about to wet his pants" she said laughing, and pointed to one particularly short boy who was looking straight forward with impossibly wide eyes. "That pitiful boy!" she said, still chuckling to herself. "Honestly, what does he think's going to happen to him in there?" Her own Sorting Hat experience wasn't even remotely memorable. Both her parents hailed from Slytherin, and they made it clear she was to be Slytherin as well. Not that she argued, way back when. She just walked up, put the hat on, waited five seconds (which was a little long, in her parent's opinion), and got the answer she was expecting. "Do you remember getting Sorted?" she asked Sam curiously.

lana williams - slytherin - tagged: open

The little... encounter with Newton did nothing to raise Lana's foul mood, and when she reached the long line of carriages she picked the nearest she could and hauled herself into it. Her rucksack bounced against her back as she closed the door behind her, and she slumped into a seat with her foot resting on the one opposite. She didn't bother to introduce herself to the occupants; instead she took out her wand and started examining it as if it was an interesting specimen. She held it pretty much up to her eyes, almost muttering under her breath. Stupid Newt, stupid argument, stupid toad... She should have taken ten points off him for threatening a prefect while she had a chance.

ooc: if anyone wants to have their carriage party crashed by lana... there you go xD

Samantha Monroe ~ 16 ~ Gryffindor

Sam laughed along with Shay as she pointed out the many terrified faces of the first years going in. Sure, her own experience had been a little nerve-wracking, but it was nothing to be almost peeing yourself over. She nodded a little at Shay's question, "The Sorting Hat was considering putting me into Ravenclaw, it was a fine line between that and Gryffindor, but apparently all I had to do to get my way was ask politely," she shrugged a little, recalling not wanting to be put in Ravenclaw because her mother told her countless stories about this one girl who was a horrid snob. Not much to go on, granted, but it put Sam off a little bit and that was all she needed. Besides, Gryffindor sounded more fun.

Quinn looked up, a little bewildered, at the Slytherin girl who had just clambered into the carriage that he was in. She seemed a little... Irate... If he was honest. A hot headed Slytherin was not what he needed right now, thanks. Nevertheless, he offered her a small smile and a nod of acknowledgement in an attempt at being friendly. He didn't say anything for fear of being snapped at; maybe he was older than her but he was tired and hungry and really just didn't have the energy to be stuck in a little carriage with a fuming teenage girl. Slytherin or not.

Nick had slipped into a carriage which, coincidentally, contained Quinn. "Where'd you leave Alice?" he joked, as if the Hufflepuff girl was like a lost puppy or something. Plopping down next to his friend, Nick bobbed his head along to the blast of the music in his earphones - this time 'I Write Sins, Not Tragedies' by Panic! at the Disco. Mere seconds later, somebody barged into the compartment unannounced - a Slytherin girl. She sat down, obviously in quite a temper, whipping out her wand. Flinching in surprise - he thought she was going to curse him or something - Nick raised his hands defensively before suddenly realizing that she was just examining the wood. Lowering his guard, he sighed and laughed awkwardly but quiet, running his fingers through his dark hair. The girl was Lana Williams, a.k.a liferuiner of at least 73% of the entire school. He didn't know if he fell into that category or not, and before he could stop himself, he asked, "What's got you all wound up?" Immediately, he regretted speaking at all, because it was quite clear that the Slytherin looked ready to pounce and tear somebody's head off in raw annoyance. That, or she looked like she was about to rant endlessly. Either way, Nick knew he wasn't going to like her reaction, and he quickly pursed his lips and diverted his eyes as the carriage began to move up-hill.

Kiara listened to Colin with a slight smile tugged onto her lips. It seemed Colin was always getting lectured on silly little things. The odds of both herself and Colin getting into bother for 'not keeping a proper eye on the younger students' was probable, though she didn't want to admit it. Second years she could handle, but firsties? Little devils, they were, savage little things that ran up and down corridors disrupting every class they passed. As always, her friend was over-exaggerating, and as usual, she was only half-listening but still smiling ever-so-slightly. "It's their fault if the get eaten, to be quite frank about it." she replied as the thestral-drawn carriage pulled up just outside the front courtyard. Clambering out, she trailed alongside Colin towards the Entrance Hall, her book still in her hand. The first group of first years scurried on by fearlessly, stopped by one of the teachers waiting for them. Continuing on into the Great Hall, Kiara plopped herself down at the Ravenclaw table, closer towards the back. Strategically, she had done so as to prevent having to sit up with the first years when they were sorted into the Ravens. Others began to file into the hall too, several with sloppy uniforms whom she barely had the heart to tell off. She spoke quietly to a third year who's tie was simply an abomination, threatening to take points from their house - Slytherin. The boy scoffed, but she narrowed her storm-grey eyes and he reluctantly re-did his sloppy tie. Satisfied, she gave him a nod and he muttered several bitter things about her before continuing on to the Slytherin table. Sighing, she turned to Colin and said, "The younger students - their uniform is abysmal. Honestly, it's ridiculous." she rolled her eyes, "Is it really so difficult to keep your tie at a reasonable length?"

Lana had been turning her wand faster and faster as her mind swirled with thoughts- red, angry thoughts. She looked up for just two seconds, enough to realize the two in the carriage with her were a Hufflepuff and a Gryffindor. Great. Just her luck. Two people who probably hated her- if not her, her house. She should have been thankful, really, when the Gryffindor started talking, because she was about to hex someone just for the hell of it. Of course, his words then made her want to hex him even more. She stuffed her wand in her robes pocket and settled for glaring at him. "Is it any of your business?" She would have gone on to rant about how Gryffindors were always so cocky and thought they knew everything, but she didn't really want to annoy two people in one night. It wouldn't go down well. She bit her tongue and rested her head back on her seat, clenching and unclenching her fists.
