dinosaurs have captured our imaginations for hundreds of years, ever since richard owen named them in 1841. we've often wondered how intelligent they were, how they behaved, and how they would interact with modern man. but only recently have we considered the possibility they could still be alive somewhere. fictional series like jurassic park have spurred our curiosity, causing us to explore a world where dinosaurs roam alongside us. even so, we could never believe that fantasy could come to fruition.

instead of on a desolate island or in a remote country, living, breathing dinosaurs have been discovered surviving -- no, thriving -- deep underground. new technology, used for drilling natural resources, have uncovered the dinosaurs' secret "lost world," right under our feet. it's a monumental discovery. but something is off with these animals, as well as the world they live in...

welcome (to jurassic park)

the lost world is an...anomaly, of sorts. the luminescent bacteria on the ceiling cast an orange glow into the cavity below, giving the illusion of a permanent dusk. in the jungles, the massive plants pack densely together. the only way to get through is via the trails the animals themselves have made through the underbrush; thankfully, the trails are large enough for vehicles to get through.

medium-sized, herbivorous dinosaurs enjoy life on the plains, while the taller herbivores inhabit the redwoods. the trees stretch to the stalactites above, their brushing leaves covered in the bacteria that give the world its light.

the swamp is murky and dangerous, the waters hiding massive crocodilian dinosaurs and their descendants -- not to mention blood-sucking leeches and pesky mosquitoes. the canyon is inaccessible to humans, but small dinosaurs make their homes there, as well as the gulch parallel to it. the various cave systems house insects and arachnids of gargantuan size.

your job

your job is to study, monitor, and ultimately understand the animals of the lost world. they are more curious than anything, even timid, but at the end of the day, they're unpredictable. exercise extreme caution.

there will be four groups of researchers. each has four field biologists, two medics, and three guards. field biologists are equipped with sedative darts and whatever equipment they may need. medics have medical equipment. guards have high caliber rifles, lethal to anything that stands in their way. but remember -- only shoot when necessary. harm as few animals as possible.
Image

you aren't sure what these new creatures are. they smell strange, and they act even stranger. they came from somewhere far off. could that mean there's a whole other world you don't know about? maybe you should find out. but be careful -- you don't know what these upright apes can do. they might be smaller than you, but that doesn't mean they can't be dangerous. you learned that right from hatching.

rules

Postby BT! » Thu Aug 16, 2018 4:24 am

      site rules apply.
there are a limited number of researchers allowed in the rp, but you can have as many dinosaurs as you want!
specify in your researcher's form if you're okay with them being killed off. unfortunately, we need some kind of risk factor.
please be capable of writing two sentences or more.
any dinosaur (and pterosaur) from the triassic to the cretaceous is allowed. go nuts y'all.
on that note, please know the basics about the dinosaur(s) you're rping.
pictures aren't required for any character. however, if you don't have a picture for someone, please make an effort to describe them.
we know now that many therapods had feathers, but if you prefer the jurassic park-style scaly look, that's fine. it can be an interesting factor in how the lost world is...just a little bit off.
respect each other ooc. transphobia, homophobia, racism, etc. will not be tolerated.
characters of any race, gender, or sexuality are allowed.
keep characters' limitations realistic (dinosaurs included).
research suggests theropods like tyrannosaurus rex matured at twenty years old, and sauropods much older. however, for rp's sake, we can say most medium- and large-sized dinosaurs mature at about ten.

EMA MAHI'AI
    female
    guard
    squad b
    tags: open
the day started with a canteen of water, the military-grade truck bouncing along a foreign path. the lieutenant yawned. she was excited to discover what real dinosaurs looked like -- people had speculated for hundreds of years, and now she would be one of the lucky few to know for sure -- but the sun hadn't even risen over the horizon when she'd awoken, just barely staining the night sky with its radiance.

now she was heading deep underground, perpetually angled downward as the vehicle rolled into the massive cavern. she tried not to think of the possibility of death, nor the intimidating unpredictability of the animals she was about to meet. she and her squad simply needed to keep their heads level and remember all they were doing for mankind.

ILIAD

the shrieks of pterosaurs signified another day cycle, the birdlike lizards rousing for their dawn routine. they sat in the boughs of ginko trees, chatting with each other like over-sized songbirds, waking diurnal beasts from their slumber. deep in the eastern swamp, a light brown, wide eye opened, constricting in the orange light.

the spinosaurus was sluggish in waking, blinking slowly. she lifted her head to survey her territory, ensuring she was alone before getting to her feet. the theropod's side was caked with mud; she had spent the night among the great ferns alongside the water, the mud keeping her scaly skin from drying out.

she lumbered toward the muddy water, her tail swishing out behind her nonchalantly. it was time to begin hunting.

DEVILDOG
    dilophosaurus
    male
    tags: open
while many other creatures' day was just beginning, the black-and-orange dilophosaur's was coming to a close. he'd filled his belly early into the night; he had spent the rest of his time patrolling, warily keeping an eye out for larger predators. now he wanted nothing more than to sleep, his energy sapping more with every step.

finally, he reached his den, hidden behind ferns. it was a secure spot; the dilophosaurus himself could scarcely fit inside, his feathered ribs scraping the twin rocks that enclosed his hideout. he sniffed inside, ensuring no other animals had made themselves at home, before settling onto his rear, his tail curled around himself. gradually, he lowered himself to the ground, peeking out of the rocky outcrop for a final security check.

CHARLIE
    struthiomimus
    male
    tags: open
a flash of orange darted through the tall grass, the blades swishing against the animal's underbelly. he was always moving quickly; sometimes, he startled other dinosaurs, causing them to run, too. but he wasn't in any danger -- for the time being. he just had places to go, and limited time to get there.

for instance, this morning, he was hurtling toward a small watering hole, surrounded by edmontosaurs and iguanadons. he sniffed the air curiously, tilting his head to eye them.

none of them seemed to care about his appearance. a few glanced over, but, overall, they couldn't be bothered. perfect.

the struthiomimus trotted forward and dipped his head to drink, wide eyes ever watchful. once he was done here, he would begin his daily search for others of his kind; he was vulnerable alone, and felt the weight of it with every passing second.

T-34
    scolosaurus
    undetermined
    tags: open
        a mud-colored stone sneezed.

it shifted, its large weight transferring to the stumps it lay on. suddenly, the stone transformed into a large ankylosaurid, its head shaking as it drove the sleep from its eyes. it licked its beaklike nose, dispelling the fly from its nostril. then, it began moving.

this was the daily routine for the scolosaurus. its tail dragged the ground, the animal not fully awake yet. as if on instinct, it was heading toward the plains, knowing rich nutrients could be foraged there. the walk would take awhile, though; the redwoods surrounding the dinosaur crowded closely, the roots overlapping often and the ferns hiding them with sneaky malevolence. at its current speed, the scolosaurus would arrive at the forest's edge that afternoon.

Taika was doing the daily patrol of her territory, and it was going well. She always did a patrol as early as she could; who knows what kind of creatures may have crept in while she slept? She chased out a few smaller raptors that seemed to have stumbled in, and started looking for something to hunt.

She felt a little uneasy today, and she didn't know why; it definitely wasn't the raptors,as she had seen tons of them before. She did a few extra checks of her surroundings just to be safe, and eventually decided that nothing was wrong and she should relax herself. She drank water from a nearby source and searched for a nice vantage point so she could begin the morning hunt.

💀 birdie 💀 redwood forests 💀 hungry 💀 open, humans? 💀╔══════════════════════════════════════════════════╗

a deep, spine-chilling noise rang out, soft and unfriendly, like the purring of a tiger
about to tear you to shreds. the ground vibrated with the noise, sending tiny stones
skittering across the damp, woody earth as if they were alive. there was a thump that
echoed throughout the woods as a monumental creature stepped out of the shrubbery,
eyes like orange lanterns gazing at the little animal that stood before it- a young velociraptor.
the pitiful creature was frozen with fear. birdie's jaws parted, bearing teeth like garden
shears. the little raptor didn't stand a chance, and soon birdie was sitting, head in the air
so gravity could help her gulp down the corpse whole, flexing her throat to swallow the
meal. muzzle dripping with blood, she slowly plodded to the local waterhole before
pausing to watch a truck roll smoothly in. she feared humans, but knew they feared
her also, ever since she killed one of their kind. what did she do wrong? she was
hungry so she hunted- why were the humans so upset? cleaning the bits of
velociraptor from her snout with a tongue like leather, birdie paused next to the
well-trodden path to watch the truck go along it.
