KaiLee Speaks In:Dark Red
Bane Speaks In: Black
Dandy halted in front of the cave and sat down, his tail tapping impatiently on the ground as he waited. However, in a way he was glad of the moment to think; he had to figure out a way of calming KaiLee down. Her stress could spread to the other foxes. Just then, his stomach growled and he had an idea. He turned to the vixen he had been travelling with for some time now.
"KaiLee," he began in a quiet, commanding voice, "could you please go and do some hunting?
"And take Bane with you," he added as an afterthought, "I agree that it might be dangerous to approach a potentially contagious disease, but if no one inspects this new problem, then it cannot be fixed. But I wouldn't want you two to catch it in case I'm unable to help."
KaiLee looked somewhat relieved, though still a little apprehensive that Dandy was going in. Bane, on the other hand, looked downright furious.
"That's not fair!" he yelped, an expression of belligerence plastered all over his face.
Both KaiLee and Dandy closed their eyes in unison and Dandy's felt his brain work harder on this problem than it was working on the disease.
"Bane..." he started, but the young fox cut him off, his ears back in his anger.
"No!" he snarled, "You've always told me to keep my eyes and ears open and to learn as much as I can whenever I can. You said that yourself!
"And suddenly I've got the perfect opportunity to learn more about healing and you tell me to go play in the fields???"
"Bane!" KaiLee barked, her eyebrows knit with intense disapproval, "Hunting is not play and if you'd listen for just a moment you'd understand how important it is to Dandy's work."
Bane's eyes were narrowed into slits and his ears were still flat against his head, his expression mulish, but he was at least silenced. Dandy took over the conversation.
"As you know, Bane," he began, his voice taking the tone he used when lecturing Bane or KaiLee about the properties of plants he knew, "when you get sick, your body gets weaker.
"When this weakness hits," Dandy continued, his eyes going out of focus as his mind followed the process, "your body works twice as hard to keep you from succumbing to the sickness. It therefore needs twice as much energy to keep it working properly. This means that the body needs twice as much food as it usually needs.
"If you were to go hunting for us," Dandy finished, his eyes focusing on Bane's directly now, "you would not only be keeping your body healthy with exercise and also honing your skills at hunting, but you would also be aiding me in keeping this fox well supplied with the extra food he needs."
Bane snorted, but his head lowered and he looked a little sheepish.
"Fine..." he muttered but he raised his head to look back at Dandy defiantly, "But when I get back, I get to help."
"We'll see if you'll make a good helper when you get back," Dandy growled, not liking the young fox's attitude, "be stubborn like that and I might not be able to trust that you'll follow my directions."
This fully cowed Bane's resolve and he sighed, rolled his eyes, and then looked uncomfortable. KaiLee, however, seemed to know that she should take advantage of Bane's somewhat more obediant state of mind.
"Come on, Bane!" she yelped, "The sooner we start, the sooner we get back."
Her tail started wagging a little, as if encouraging the teen to take on a more positive attitude.
"Coming..." Bane muttered, still a little sullen, and followed after her.
Dandy sighed, partially with regret that he had been so harsh on Bane and partially with relief that he had convinced Bane to go. Dandy found him helpful, but he knew that KaiLee would have hated it if Dandy had just put Bane in danger's way because he was curious. Plus, it was good for the over-sized kit to learn some respect for authority. Dandy hoped Bane would learn a lesson and come back less irritable.
Suddenly Dandy realized that the other fox... Damien he thought, was still there. Dandy felt his pelt grow hot with embarrassment as he turned to the todd.
"My apologies," he murmured, "Bane can be a bit high-strung. But he really is a good fox. Are you planning to come inside yourself?"
Dandy looked Damien over curiously, he didn't really look like a fox that would be interested in healing. But Dandy mentally shrugged off the judgement. He really wasn't good at guessing other foxes' characters.
(Whew! long post. Hope its ok. :3)
