I grow solemn as I listen to Micah and Noah, wrapping my free hand over our two linked ones. "I'm sorry," I say softly, leaning my head against his shoulder. "My family left."

Victor landed up in his tree. It was the only peaceful place he wanted to go. His claws made new wounds in the tree bark and he gripped so he wouldn't slip off. He sulked in silence.
