Jen's voice was so soft, melting Gavotte's heart. She truly resembled her element now more than ever. The Uprising was well aware of her reputation as a fearsome force, just like the flames she could wield for destruction.
Now her demeanor reminded him of the other face of fire. Not as a destroyer, but as a protector. Fire could burn, yes, but it could also save those in dire need of its warmth. It could drive wolves away from a camp, or blaze as a guiding torch of light. This was the kind of flame Gavotte saw in Jen's eyes right now.
"Thank you, Jen," He spoke, smiling softly up at the taller blonde.
"That means a lot.""Is there anywhere in Delra you'd want to settle down?" He asked, addressing her but also the others near them. As for Gavotte himself, he didn't have any particular plans. He just wanted to be wherever his family was.

By the time the Phoenix Squad left the train, Ardai's curiosity had boiled over. He ignored whatever the commander was saying about shoes. Ardai was wearing perfectly good high heels already, and his attention was almost solely - no pun intended - on his friend. Quinn was pulling a pair of flamboyant sneakers from his bag. Ardai grinned, about to compliment his friend on his fashion choice, when Quinn's next words surprised him.
"Wait, they're for me?" Ardai pointed at himself incredulously. He'd been under the impression that Quinn brought the sneakers for himself. This was a surprise - and one that sent him over the moon.
"Wowie! I love them!"He kicked off his high heels (one went flying at the tree) and practically jumped into the new sneakers.
"It's like wearing a rainbow. Much better than those pointy things," Ardai commented with passion as he picked up his fallen heels. His walking was now much more stable as he followed the squad through the sand.
"Anyway, dude, how do you always know what I like? You must be telepathic, not just telekinetic."Sycamore Jin

Sycamore was pleasantly surprised when Thiago reassured her, even setting a soft hand on her shoulder. The little trooper survived in one piece at least. His mannerisms were so sweet and endearing - and that comment about her hugging talent made her want to hug
more, maybe later though.
"Awww, thank you baby! I'm always here to give you a hug," She told him, placing a hand above her heart.
Aida then asked her about the slight disaster from a few seconds ago.
"My mum always used to talk about the sun. Apparently phoenixes need sunlight, but I didn't think it would make me start acting silly. I think I'm fine now, though." Sycamore grinned sheepishly, scratching at the back of her neck. The feather stubble there was still a little itchy.
Why fluff had to grow back there, she had no idea.
She laughed as Aida informed the commander, in no uncertain terms, that she wanted a swimsuit.
"I should have asked this before we came but... is 'swimming' a superpower that humans have? I don't think I could even survive the cold water with those tiny suits."Atlanta Hunter

The commander smiled at the generous surge of volunteers. Aisling was the first to take initiative, pointing out her small size would be reassuring. Her example was soon followed by Demetria and Robin, then Addison and Caleb who took their friend Brenn along with them.
"Six is a good size for a welcoming committee. I'm sure Nessa will be happy to see you all," Atlanta told them as she continued to lead the way onward.
After a short stretch of walking, a house on stilts came into view along the beach. Behind it was a grove of tall beachside grass, so tall it could easily shield a person from view. It seemed the fauna in Forell grew larger than in other provinces, which, in this case, was to their benefit.
"We don't have to go inside to change after all," Atlanta told the squad. She set the large bag containing everyone's swimsuits on the ground.
"Everyone's free to sit and rest, or get changed and splash about."She then turned to Robin and the other volunteers. Some of them had expressed interest in swimming, and she didn't want to deny them the chance.
"You six are free to go whenever - take your time. I'll be keeping an eye out for you, so make this signal if you're in trouble." Atlanta made a motion of brushing her hair back with both hands. Chances were, nobody would recognize that casual gesture as a cry for help.

My apologies for again committing the misdemeanor of an excessively long post...
I simply must illustrate for you, readers and friends, the true gravity of what happened aboard the train.
Worry not, this will not become a regular occurrence.
Approaching the commander, a tingle of dread pricked at the back of Alastair's neck. The prince appeared outwardly composed, head held high and posture straight, but it was all a ruse to distract from his clammy palms and pounding heart.
They cannot see my vulnerability. It would only be used against me at this stage, He reminded himself. His false confidence was out of necessity, but it helped tremendously that Lady Aisling was by his side.
He had always faced his father alone.
The prince smiled in greetings to Caleb and Keelan.
"Apologies if I am interrupting.""Oh, not at all!" Atlanta laughed heartily, addressing him before he looked in her direction. This casual behavior would normally be a comforting sign of acceptance as a teammate, but in Atlanta's case it was different. She tended to behave in such a way towards teammates in need of reassurance too.
Is this a gesture of approval, or one pandering to some weakness I have shown? ... Perhaps I am overanalyzing this."What do you need, Alastair?"If not for Aisling's calming presence by his side, something would have snapped from the tension.
"Commander." He bowed stiffly, almost in military posture.
"Forgive me for speaking out of line, but I beg you to consider what I am about to say." His attempt to make eye contact ended at her chin. An irrational part of him feared that if he looked any further, he would see glowering green eyes instead of the familiar stormy grey.
"I'm all ears." The lines of her face showed a deep concern, for which the cause could be a thousand different possibilities.
I must tread carefully. If she suspects my betrayal, I will lose more than my leverage in this situation."I understand your plans are of the utmost importance, and I have no intentions whatsoever of jeopardizing them." He spoke with his head lowered.
"I wish only to make one humble request. It concerns the Forest of Memories, the burial site of the Forell people." Alastair paused for a moment to gauge her reaction.
To his surprise, the commander
smiled at him.
"Are you going to ask about saving the forest? Don't worry, Alastair, that's already on our list. Unless there's something else you needed?"Silence. He had not expected this, let alone planned for it. The Emperor would never act in such a way, not even as a sarcastic quip before the shouting began. Alastair took a moment to gather his thoughts, take a deep breath, and most importantly remind himself that Commander Atlanta was not his father.
"No, commander. That is all - thank you for hearing my concerns." Steeling himself, he managed to meet Atlanta's eyes. Relief swept over him at the sight of her ash-colored gaze - grey eyes just like Lady Aisling's.
Words could not express his gratitude for his friend's companionship throughout that ordeal. Aisling's presence alone made all the difference, shielding him from the worst of his fears. The very knowledge that
someone stood with him was a tremendous comfort for a prince used to standing alone.
---
The nerves from the earlier ordeal had long since worn off. Alastair gazed out over the ocean, listening to the gentle sound of waves as a cool breeze tickled his face. The commander had not brought a swimsuit for him - the hoodie and baggy sweatpants were a requirement for now. The prince could not flaunt his identity flagrantly now, not when his missing-persons report still circulated via mass media.
"What most call unsustainable practices, the Forellians call crimes of mass destruction." He spoke to no one in particular. His back was turned to the Phoenix Squad - he trusted them not to randomly stab him out of malice at least.
"Their culture values all life, not only that of human beings. To destroy the environment, to lay ruin to flora and fauna, is to commit millions of murders in one fell swoop."
