- he could feel eyes piercing the back of his head. it was a strange sensation being watched, but ryker always knew that people would take notice of him, whether it was because of the caution he took when walking, or the blank gaze he gave everything. people questioning whether he was blind or a sociopath.
blake had such an interesting story, though. interesting enough that ryker could just tune the other thoughts out. "it's pretty tough out there, isn't it." it wasn't a question. "i never thought that there would be entire kingdoms established out there... we humans always act as if we're superior when we don't even know what we're messing with...
"arranged marriages are pretty messed up, though." ryker watched blake shift, noticing the position she took. that was one of discomfort and loathing, it seemed. it was always sad to see someone curled up against themselves. it was almost familiar. "i'm glad you got out of it, and i hope everything goes well for you here. let's pray that you'll receive more from the government than what you had to give your father."
normally, the followup to her answer would have been simple. like, oh yeah, i'm just doing this for the money so i can cure my kind-of-blindness... but blake had told him so much that the only way he could make it up to her for it was by telling her something more personal as well. ryker was a strong believer in equivalent exchange. a life for a life, a secret for a secret.
"well... i'm only here for the ten grand, honestly. for eye surgery. i'm not legally blind so the government won't even pay me a grain of salt, but the damage is prominent enough to hold me back from getting any job ever." there was a pause as he sucked in a breath. this wasn't necessarily difficult to say, but it was strange. most of ryker's friends only ever heard of him speak of his brothers and sisters. never the entire family. "in my particular bloodline, the youngest children are cared for and loved the most. they inherit everything, including the family estate. i'm the eldest of nine children, and i'm not 'fully functional' as my mom and dad had put it. so... they won't give me the money i need for surgery. they think it's a waste. not even my brothers and sisters can pay for it— they can only afford rent for my apartment back in my home city."
ryker broke into a nervous smile, laughing off any tension and discomfort that his little spiel may have caused.
