Different Species of Mermaids
(don't freak out, you don't have to read it all at once lol)
Human
You can play as a human if you wish. Humans have a near total monopoly on land. You could be a researcher, hunter, fisher, anything you want. You could try and catch a maid or fall in love with one or maybe accidentally lead them to their down fall.
Selkie
Selkies or Selkie folk meaning "Seal Folk"
Selkies form proud tribes whom are led by female Chiefs. The males can grow two to three feet bigger and more muscled than the females weighing nearly double. The selkie are an aggressive species and challenging is a normal way of life to settle arguments and conflicts. Of all the merfolk they are the biggest and heaviest with a temper to match.Selkies regard battle scars as tokens of pride and ornamental scars as things of beauty. Other scars, though, mark them as a disgrace or exiled member. They might display these scars proudly or hide them in shame. Selkie usually get by on their physical might, their endurance, and the sheer determination.
Selkies also have a unique ability they can transform in three forms human (this happens when they are either dried out completely or need to), mermaid (half human torso with a seal lower half), and seal (just like the animal but bigger). They range in color but mostly are natural colors or a pure white. The pure white is seen as either beautiful or childish; because all pups/babies are born white and shed the white fluffy, soft baby coat when beginning maturity.
Cecaelia
Cecaeliae or Cecaelia folk meaning “Octopus Folk”
Cecaeliae is creature with the upper body of a human, and the lower torso of a squid or octopus. They can travel on land short distances by use of their tentacles, and some often refer to them as the "witches of the sea" regardless of gender.
Just like octopi and squid, cecaelia are often known for their revered intelligence, proving to be crafty and near genius with puzzles and riddles of nearly any sort. They also have keen eyesight just like their octopi counterparts, making them fearsome in battle and as predators. Cecaelia come with a variety of abilities camouflage (they can copy the area around themselves and ‘disappear’ into thin air) themselves, compacting their bodies, autotomy, ink secretion when scared sometimes at will or when upset.
They live in all parts of the ocean, preferring cold, dark places usually. Most commonly in old ship wrecks and caves.
They have a ability to escape most places, if they can fit their head into a place they can contort their bones and dislocate joints to fit through the space. When they preform this ability they can reform and bounce back within a minute. Cecaelian women, however, are more likely to be magic users than males.
Baby cecaelia are called "pods" (because octopi are cephalopod molluscs).
Eelmaid
Eelmaids meaning “eel folk”
Eelmaids are Mermaids with long bodies like the lamia. They are easily the longest most slippery merfolk out there.
Unlike most mermaids, they have no trouble living on land except they are slow. This because they produce so much mucus while on land they slide on the land but they leave a trail wherever they go. Since they produce so much mucus they have trouble wearing most clothing materials.
Their massage techniques utilizing their mucus are highly advanced, and their mucus possesses cosmetic properties as well, making them popular among other mermaids as healers. They have a tremendous amount of stamina and often stay up all night, consequently making them sleep-deprived most of the time. Some have electric abilities able to produce a small shock to a lethal dose. But for the most part they are very calm and placid creatures.
Mermaid
Mermaids/men known as "fish folk"
Mermaids, like most bony fish, have swim bladders to help control buoyancy. Mermaids vary individually by color of their tail and fins, the former of which commonly matches the individual's hair color. These colors are often soft, flowery, and bright like that of tropical fish. They have great communication and persuasion with fish which in turn act as servants for them and the merfolk are vegetarians in return. They are seen as typically very vain and shallow folk. Putting a lot of the social worth based on appearance. They love shiny things, also they are enamored by the humans because of all the shiny things that they have and throw away.
However the mermaids are still hesitant on making contact with humans because of a legend of humans eating the flesh of merfolk because it will make them immortal. Still some brave or silly merfolk dare to venture out and communicate with the humans. they LOVE humans snack foods, chips, popcorn, candy. they often steal lunchs from beaches and boats.
Raymaid
Rays or Raymaids known as "ray folk"
Rays are known as the traders of the sea, during the migration they seem to always be on they gather different odds and ends from all corners of the world’s oceans and trade with other merfolk. Rays usually have one sack that they keep with them for all the treasures they find, they have to be meticulous about what they pick because they have to be able to keep up with he school during migration.
Rays secrete a slippery slime to keep from drying out, as they can only function upon land if their gills remain adequately moist. These gills are located along the waist and are compatible with both fresh and salt water. In addition to gills, mermaids also have a humanoid respiratory system that allows vocalization and breathing through the mouth. Rays hate the land, they usually get stuck and have a very difficult time moving around. Rays have a protective barb that has a poison in it, located at the tip of its tail, Rays have many ways of using this to protect themselves which are taught during the first migration. If they cannot escape quickly enough they can rapidly bury themselves at the bottom of the sea floor.
Siren
Siren known as "flying fish folk"
The Siren is best known for being a nervous fish folk. That being said they typically get along fine with their own schools. Even going as far as racing and flying through the water, there is a constant thought running through a Siren head that they have to fly as soon as they go fast enough that they can fly. They will ascend to a god-like state and finally be free from al fear and worry.
They have by far the lightest, fine yet well-muscled bodies of all fish folk. The typical scales are a variation of white and blue, which match their hair perfectly. They don’t like wearing a lot, going as fast as they can swim they can feel the pull against them slowing them down, which is why their hair is typically cut really short. They also love to sing and where the original legend of the siren. They sing to calm themselves and it has a magical property that ensnares the opposite sex, lulling them into a extremely passive state. This is extremely effective on humans, but vary on other species of merfolk.
