"Why can't I sleep?" she groaned as she rolled over. The letter from the Academy lay on her bedside table, shining in the moonlight.
"I'm not going, so stop it." she said to the envelope.
I'm talking to an envelope. . . she thought. Her dog whined softly and nosed her hand where it hung off the bed, needing to go outside. Maya moaned and got up, deciding to take the envelope with her. She walked out to her backyard with her dog, staying in the doorway as she opened the letter for the umpteenth time. Her dog barks and started digging in the grass, going after a mole.
"Wally, no!" Maya said as she stepped out intro the yard. Her gut twisted and she stumbled. When she looked around, she saw she was no longer on her backyard.
"Aw, man!" she cried.
"I'm not even dressed, and all my stuff is back home!" She was still dressed in her pajamas, since she hadn't planned on going. She sighed and began walking on a small, narrow path, determined they would send her back home to Lily. If not, she'd be stuck, unless she could find another way out.
Unless you actually want to stay, a small voice in the back of her mind said. She shook her head vigorously and continued walking until she reached the school, where she stopped in her tracks.
"This is the school?" she said incredulously.

His mother stood behind him, tears dampening her cheeks.
"Go, Miles. You need this." she said, motioning for him to go with one hand while she wiped away the tears.
"I'll come back as soon as I can, mom, I swear," Miles said as he stepped out the door. When the world stopped spinning, Miles fell to his knees with a groan. He felt like he was going to throw up. . . After a moment, he felt well enough to stand, and he looked around. He found himself at the edge of a lake.
What. . .? he thought to himself. Then he saw a trail, off to the side, and decided to follow it. A while later, he found himself in front of a grand building.
"Whoa. . ." he said softly as he looked around. After a second, he shook his head and headed into the building.
