Feroz dipped his head politely at the MΓΈrklox when she spoke to him in sort of bow. Io listened interestedly she spoke about her dragon. She knew that if Feroz was blind she would never have been able to fly with him, her dragon barely listened to her commands now so if he had to rely completely on them... io winced at the thought of it. He definitely wouldn't trust her enough. "You must be incredibly patient to be able to manage that." She told Onyx in admiration.
"Oh, right." She said with a nod when Onyx told her why the dragon wasn't here. To be honest, she'd forgotten that the girl she was talking to was a MΓΈrklox and not just because the girl towered over her. Once Io started chatting she completely forgot about the other girls race seeing her only as someone she can chat away to. This trait came from both her parents, it was the reason they made such good ambassadors. You couldn't talk persuasively with others if you were judging the whole time. "Your dragon sounds wonderful!" From the sound of it, dragon was huge, adorable and actually liked and trusted her, all excellent traits in a dragon. Feroz chittered angrily at this comment, triggering Io to throw her arms up in exasperation. "You just threw me on the floor!
At Onyx's declaration for the Luxen Io couldn't help but smile, "It's none of my business who's side you're on. I live amongst the Nybans now, if they're not involved in the war then neither am I." Of course, this wasn't entirely true. Io's parents were the Luxen ambassadors after all, they were trying their best to get the authorities in Luxen to attempt a peace treaty. Unfortunately, that would require letting the MΓΈrklox have some land and so there weren't many fans of the idea. "But thank you. It's nice to know you're definitely not going to attack me." Io smiled ,a little sheepishly, "I know Luxen can be cruel and judgemental but I'm trying my best to be more Nyban in the respect." She imagined that was the reason Onyx had made that sudden comment. "Anyway, what is it that brings you to the great Vidreterran capital?" She gestured around her as she said this, having identified implicitly that Onyx had come from outside the capital Io was curious.

Onyx smiled softly at the compliments, and chuckled lightly at Lo and her dragons little fight. "Thank you" She said at he reassurance that that It didn't matter what race she was. She shook her "Yeah unlike most MΓΈrklox I'm not the biggest fan of fighting." She said. Onyx stretched a bit, and rolled her neck. She nodded at her statement about the races, she barely understood what she was saying "I need to get supplies, and food" She said and patted her bag that scrambled when she did "My father usually goes but he is caught up In rebel business" She said "The war has messed up our rutin, Since we are both being chased to join the war, luckily they don't know the mines like we" She said with a certain pride

CILAN

Male β˜€ Helios β˜€ Senegal's Rider

β–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆγ€β˜€γ€‘β–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆ

Cilan chuckled sheepishly as he smoothed out his own hair using his hands. It popped back up like sprouts of trampled grass, but worse, because at least grass had a direction.
"I sure wish you were a grass-braider," He mused as he tried one more time to fix the gigantic catastrophe that was his bedhead. "But then again, even the best grass-braider would have trouble with this."
He finally threw his arms up in exasperation. His dragon had stopped cooing over him like a mother dove, but he turned around to find her cooing over Wisteria now. The feathery steed sang a soft chirrup chirrrrp tweetweet tweet as she nuzzled the girl, giving her a little kiss on the head. The side of Senegal's fluffy head crest brushed Wisteria's cheek. Cilan had to scratch his own face, watching that. He always got ticklish when Senegal nuzzled him because she was so darn fuzzy.

Cilan took the time to greet Xyris. He approached the dragon slowly and gave him a wide grin, chirping in dragon tongue like an affectionate fledgling dragon. Cilan was pretty much speaking baby talk for dragons. He wondered if other dragons found that cute, annoying, or just plain silly. Of course, Senegal loved the baby talk because she tried to mother everyone.
The Helios boy nearly jumped out of his skin when Senegal nudged him from behind. "Hey!" He exclaimed, turning around and pretending to be all ticked off. He wasn't very good at pretending. Senegal laughed at him with a good-natured little churrrrup.
Wisteria no longer had her arms around Senegal's neck, though. She was gonna race him? Cilan's face broke out in a grin as he scrambled to the ladder first. No way she'd get there first, he was already hogging the ladder and she couldn't just climb over him. "Want me to give you a head start?" The boy joked, laughing as he ran a hand over the smooth outline of his ear.
Chirp chirrr tweet. Use your eyes, Senegal chided him gently. Cilan tweeted back in confusion, until he followed her gesture and noticed what was going on. Sneaky Wisteria was climbing up her dragon.
"Cheater!" Cilan laughed, then realized he said it in dragon tongue. No time to correct himself. He raced up the ladder like the lives of his whole village depended on it. As a Helios, the idiom "like his own life depended on it" didn't carry the same weight.

By the time he reached the top of the watchtower, he flopped dramatically onto his side like a dying fish. "Man, I feel bad for our dragons because they've gotta fight gravity like- How are you already up here?!"
Cilan stared incredulously at Wisteria until he heard the familiar birdsong of his own dragon. Senegal was soaring around the watchtower like a mother eagle around her nest. It was no surprise what she was singing. "You lost, my child, now you must be a graceful loser and admit defeat. Be a good child now."
Cilan huffed and pretended to be frustrated, but again, he really sucked at that. He burst out laughing after a few seconds of feigned indignance. "That was a good one! You really got me, Wis." He rolled onto his back and lay there, sprawled out. "I'm just gonna chill like one of those village kirins down East. Come join me and let's talk about, uh, food!"
Cilan wasn't at all tired, but he pretended to be out of sheer laziness. He wanted to lie there and just daydream about heroic stuff or something. "Oh. And if you stop killing me, I'll share my lunch with you next time."
He wasn't really making sense at this point, but that was normal for him.

xyris clicked back at cilan, leaning his head down to flick his tongue against the helio's cheek. just the regular greetingβ€” xyris had a habit of licking whoever he takes likings to.

wisteria knew the last stretch of the climb was the hardest on xyris. she balanced a foot on the wyvern's head, allowing him to tip her into the watchtower. they had done it dozens of times, but even so, gravity was a tough opponent against their mighty (and/or fluffy) beasts, as cilan had just commented on.

"practice makes better!" wisteria exclaimed, taking a seat next to cilan who was still sprawled out. xyris soon joined senegal in the air while the nyban laid back, shifting so that her hands cupped the back of her head comfortably.

"i hope you know it's tough for me to not praise you, cilan. but do note: your offer makes no difference to me. you'd willingly share your lunch with anyone at any point! your race literally lives for us!" wisteria tried her best not to react to that pun about the kirins her friend had just made. she'd admit that she had done a good job with covering up a snicker. quite honestly, that pun was ridiculous.

"by the way, cilan. do you really think grass-braiders exist out there? it's like... i think grass-braiders are some sort of mystical creature, y'know? ack, i'm rambling again." truth be told, wisteria really didn't know if grass-braiders existed. it was some strange topic of conversation, but she was genuinely curious. why groom something that you know will be ruined? as much as the nyban love nature, they have to walk somewhere, and wherever the ground isn't paved with cobblestone or gravel, it's filled with grass. some child would make fun out of undoing the grass-braider's hard work with their toes or something. would grass-braiders even get paid?

"Yeah, you don't seem like any of the MΓΈrklox I've met before." Io told Onyx when the girl mentioned how little she enjoyed fighting, "There was a party I went to. My parents had to be sure to steer the conversation awaqy from land and farming and the mΓΈrklox all seemed to look down on us, even while they were looking up. I suppose we probably looked the same to them though, all pride and hostility." This ha been one of her parents professional parties, used to maintain relations between the races. Or to attempt to, anyway.
"'Rebel business' does make it exciting." Although anything would have sounded exciting to Io, since she was stuck in the capital. "I don't think I could navigate a mine. I lose all sense of direction underground, I've been in the caves a few times but if had been on my own I don't think I'd ever have come out again." Io thought for a few moments before grinning at Onyx. "I'll come with you to fetch those supplies." she told her, it was a statement rather than an offer, "Feroz clearly isn't in the mood for practice and I'm not supposed to leave the capital so it'll be good to have something to do. Besides, if it's usually your father that comes to fetch them I can make sure you know where everything is."

Cilan let out a huff of mock annoyance. He couldn't keep a straight face though, and burst out laughing. It was true that his race would do anything for hers.
Sometimes he wondered how the Helios evolved this way, just out of curiosity. He had a theory his people hadn't evolved, but rather were created for the purpose of protecting others. It was a strange instinct to want to die for another species. Of course, being possessed of such instincts, Cilan wasn't complaining. He shamelessly daydreamed of saving his village from evil every day. It was a happy life to him, being unafraid of death as long as he could protect his people.

"Fine! You win rights to my lunch," The boy ceded. "As for the praise thing..."
His eyes wandered from the cobwebbed roof of the watchtower to Wisteria's ears, then back to the cobwebs before he could be caught staring (hopefully). Even an elf's ears were beautiful, like the spear Cilan used to stab his pretend enemies. Oh wait. That wasn't a pretty thing by Nyban standards. To Svartafhela with cultural differences!
Cultural differences... Cilan finally knew what he wanted to do with the praise thing.
"I swear on Vidreterra's crystals, we need to prank a Luxen or Morklox one day." He grinned. "If their compliments work as well as yours, can you imagine the looks on their faces?"
Cilan closed his eyes and visualized that. A regal, blonde Luxen with high brows raised even higher. A tough old Morklox blinking in astonishment. The mental picture made him snort with laughter.

Outside, Senegal was still singing like a bird. Her soft wingbeats could be heard circling the watchtower, along with the less feathery sounds of Xyris in flight. The sound nearly lulled him into taking a nap. Fortunately, Wisteria started talking about weird stuff and jolted him back to reality. Well, kind of reality.
"Uhh... Yeah! Grass-braiders probably almost break their necks leaning down to work, because I bet they're ridiculously tall. Like, twice the height of Cassia Jin next door." Cilan tried not to laugh at the thought of someone that tall. Poor guys wouldn't fit through any doors. "I have this idea that tall races are actually more peaceful. I mean, look at you compared to the Morklox! I guess my race is an exception, but we're not really elves? Eh, my idea made more sense when it was still in my head."
Cilan shrugged, which wasn't too effective when lying on the watchtower floor. He ended up chafing the bottom of his arms a little. Oh well. A little rug burn was nothing for a future badass hero of Vidreterra, eh?

Onyx nodded in agreement at her statement about MΓΈrklox "Even though I have limited experience, that is generally what I've seen with most MΓΈrklox, There are some exceptions, like my father and most of the rebels." She said "Yeah, I like the lack of routine" She said in response to her comment about rebel business. She gave a small nod when she went on about navigation "That would be great, since this is my first time in the capital" she said "I don't know anything about life in the capital.

"Luxen all seem to have the same attitudes as well." Io replied, when Onyx commented that her impressions of the MΓΈrklox had been mostly correct, "It's not until we leave Chrysolitus that we realise how wrong we are."
Io had been back and forth in Vidreterra since she was five and she was ashamed she still had to catch herself sometimes before falling back on her awful, Luxen judgements.
She nodded at Onyx's reply about the excitement of 'rebel business's. Io understood how great losing the routine must be. Being the youngest daughter of the Luxen ambassadors meant most of her time was dominated by education, not that she was complaining of course but the repetition of learning was definitely tedious.
When Onyx reacted positively to Io's insistence that she was coming along with her Io beamed and clapped her hands together. "This is going to be wonderful!" She cried eagerly, "First things first, do you have a list? There are lots of useful shops and stalls around the square but it'll be easier if you know exactly what you need."

these days on the watchtower with cilan were usually the best. they only come second to family outings when none of her siblings fight over the last piece of pie. it was times like this when wisteria could take off her dragon rider's skin, shed herself from her caretaker's mask and speak about any random thing she wanted without a care in the world. and cilan would listen and talk back. and make a remark about something else once in a while. and then wisteria would compliment him and hope it doesn't kill him.

"y'know, you'd be lucky to even get a compliment out of a luxen. they're as stubborn as you when it comes to protecting us." wisteria gave cilan a laugh at the continuation of her grass-braider theory, remembering just how tall cassia jin was. that height is no joke, but the helios are typically tall protectors so it didn't come across as much of a surprise. "ha, imagine them walking around. you might accidentally get kicked in the head! they'd be literal giants!"

she did have to agree with him about the taller races being more peaceful, helios included. of course, the luxen were the only exception. they weren't particularly a tall race, but their genes were all over the place. the tall ones weren't any less racist, either. "it's not a bad idea, but even if you guys aren't elves, you've still been living with us since the beginning of time. you're practically one of us. the luxens... that's another story."

wisteria shifted so that she was now leaning back on her elbows, at least semi-sitting. "say... if you're really up for it, we could find that luxen or mΓΈrklox. they're kinda centralized near the south or the capital. i'd love to go some day. i don't remember when's the last time i had been inside those walls. it'd be a fun little vacation, but the little ones worry me," wisteria sighed. "i mean, remember that time muscari tried to steal one of the teacher's children because he didn't wanna do his homework? geez, what goes through that kid's head?"

β–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆγ€β˜€γ€‘β–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆ

Stubborn mule Luxens and lanky grass-braiders with towering legs... Cilan couldn't stop laughing. The poor boy was doubled over and could barely get a coherent word out. By the time he calmed down enough to speak, his entire midsection ached like a giant had grabbed him by the waist and squeezed. It was a good ache, though, to laugh so hard it hurt.
He rolled over onto his side, facing Wisteria. The cold floor of the watchtower chilled his cheek where they met. It was a nice, refreshing coolness on this warm day.

"I'm one of you? Man, that flattery is deadly." Cilan dramatically clutched a hand over his chest like he was having a heart attack. Fortunately, this wasn't the case. He wasn't fighting against dreadful wounds or anything. Sticks and stones could break his bones, but words couldn't hurt him until the sticks and stones had already broken his bones.
"No, I'm serious! Luxen warmongers aside, that's a really really nice thing to say. You basically invited us to live in this paradise with you guys." Cilan sat up and gestured around with a grandiose sweep of his arm. Vidreterra was basically heaven on Midea, there was no other way to sum it up. A peaceful haven where people lived in perfect harmony with one another and with nature... this was the exact type of idyllic beauty he was born to protect, and others of his race would concur likewise.

"But, you're right. Besides all the cool protector stuff, you know what's the best thing to do with a paradise?" Cilan's ridiculous grin turned mischievous as he rubbed his hands like a caricature of a villain. "Explore it!"
He lay back down, folding his hands over his chest. "I try to sneak out all the time, but old Senegal turns into a mother hen and brings me right back. It's like I'm grounded for life! But I'm sure she'd let me go with you. Maybe she could stay and watch your siblings... Or we could ask Cassia Jin's family."
Yeah, the whole village knew Wisteria was responsible and Cilan was not. Senegal was no exception. She did count as a villager, after all, she slept in the village at night and watched over it during the day. She was bound to see Wisteria going about her daily duties, looking after all her siblings. Cilan on the other hand... he was more commonly found putting creepy bugs in Cashew Jin's room.

The boy burst out laughing at the mention of the hostage situation. "Oh man, how could I forget? Holding a kid for ransom! That's a creative way to get out of homework. I thought it would work, too! Well, until the poor guy got busted and sent to detention forever."
A year wasn't forever, but it felt longer than eternity when it involved daily detention. Ugh! Cilan would rather eat one of the gross bugs he pranked the neighbors' son with.
"That reminds me. Remember that time I told the teacher the dog ate my homework, but it was actually..." Cilan couldn't keep talking because he started laughing too hard.
He thought that plant microbiology worksheet was too hard, so he took drastic measures. He actually managed to convince the neighbor's daughter, Runt (named for her ridiculously small size for a Helios) to eat the entire paper. Runt was a girl with the personality of a hyper puppy, so Cilan felt it was appropriate to tell the teacher "the puppy ate my homework". He walked into class late and used that excuse immediately.
Unfortunately, just minutes before Cilan arrived late to class, Runt had already blabbed the story of how he made her eat his homework. She'd told this to every student in the class, and the teacher naturally overheard.
Detention! And remedial plant microbiology homework...
