- Although Vaxas next move was to scoff at Gene and roll his eyes, he did so with a playful intention. He realized that he needed to loosen up a bit, especially now that he had a new team. Nonetheless, he still wanted to seem sour for the fun of it. It's not like his attitude was always spoiled or anything, right? The Commander found the perfect opportunity to be a witty jerk again whilst listening to Gene's commands. "Okay, thanks, mom. I guess I'm not the damn Commander anymore."
"I'll best you in a fight for this position, Miss Harms. One v. one me." For a moment when he was taunting the second in command, Vaxas felt something light up inside him. It felt like happiness. Joy. Something he hadn't felt for years. (It's not love, Jasper. Chill.) His condition had only worsened after the death of his brother, but Vaxas had indeed been diagnosed with chronic depression long before the end of the world. He had no idea how many different types of medication he had been on... Or at least he had lost count. Every night he'd either be lying awake or counting pills instead of sheep because that's how the broken kids did it.
Every fire will eventually get put out. The sun will expand and explode, turning into nothing but the void. The dead star will fall so heavy that it'll sap everything from the vacuum around it. It'll sap light. Why was Vaxas comparing his mental state to a black hole anyway? He had a job to do. Had to teach the kids. Ugh.
Vaxas' one-eyed gaze flickered to Jasper for a moment, enough to catch a curt tensing of the muscles, a subtle fury in the eyes. The Commander knew that look very well. He saw the same blaze in his own iris once. A slight dilation of the pupil when he saw her— a fire in his eye that should have burned out, but didn't. There wasn't a lie anywhere in his heart that said Akiria Saito was not the perfect girl. Lords, Vaxas was in love. Was. But like Mallius, she perished among the dust. Or maybe a repressed memory says Vaxas killed her in order to spare her soul from torment. He didn't' remember— he couldn't.
Watching Jasper leave after Gene, Vaxas turned on his own booted heel and strayed off the other way towards the other hall where he could monitor some other classrooms. He had no idea how attendance worked. He'd need a little help from someone else. Luca had left a while ago to train on his own. The Commander didn't hope to bug him about that. Gene had requested for Jesse to teach enchantments, meaning Vaxas was alone in dealing with whoever he had to deal with.
Oh well.
