- They were like flashbangs. Sudden. Sheets of white before his gaze between flickering images of Albizia’s disheveled hair and determined russet eyes. Russet eyes that wouldn’t die. Paradox came back to Vaxas… Or rather, Vaxas fell back into it. That demon wasn’t going to let go. It tugged on his soul like a fisherman with his line. In his mind, Vaxas screamed as he tried to overpower that last bit of Paradox that was in control, yet he didn’t make it in time. The katana sunk itself into Albizia’s abdomen which… She seemed to be fine with to his surprise. This didn’t mean everything was alright. She was wounded.
Paradox glared at the woman with mad eyes. “Your Commander is dead,” it lied. “He is as dead as your friend— just as easily manipulated. Just as useless.”
Regaining control for a split second, Vaxas picked up the blade and flung it aside, hissing at the bloodied weapon. “You better not— you better not possess her. Para— You’re able to. You know it as well as I do. Don’t. I’m enough.”
All this was said in Albizia’s arms before Paradox returned, only to smile. “I don’t possess the intelligently inept… But congratulations, Vaxas. You won this round.” In the blink of an eye, Paradox’s teal glow vanished from Vaxas’ body and returned to the sword which had ended up several metres away. The blood on it sizzled and faded off, as if it had never been there.
Vaxas awoke for a moment, his teal gaze returning to its normal state instead of a blank and nefarious stare. He knew Gene would be mad. He knew many more people would be mad. He had lost control within the walls. He was the Commander. He was a man with responsibility— one who had to take his brother’s responsibilities and fulfill his dreams. Vaxas needed to be a good Commander in Mallius’ place… Yet he was already failing.
Amidst his guilt for what he had just done to his friends and his surroundings, Vaxas stopped. His body was still but his heart throbbed as if it was ready to burst out of his chest. A cough erupted from the back of his throat and in a second, Vaxas was sputtering with blood dribbling down his chin from his mouth and nose, slipping off his leather vest and onto the grass where it would stain for several days until the rain came and washed it away. Vaxas felt tears pricking his eyes but urged himself not to cry... To no avail. He clutched onto Albizia’s arms with both his hands and frantically shook his head.
“Not alright… It’s never alright,” He sobbed, though his deranged cries melted down into something quiet as his world was enveloped in black.
“I never thought I could actually be disappointed in you, bro.”
“Mallius? Mallius… It’s you…” Vaxas reached into the void and wrapped his arms tightly around his brother who was more than happy to return the embrace. “I’m sorry… I’m so sorry. I was— I was upset… I did everything wrong, I ruined everything… I’m so sorry… I’m so—”
“Hush.” The younger man stroked his brother’s ivory locks. “I’ll forgive you no matter what. You’re trying as hard as your mind will let you. Everything you feel is eating you from the inside out. I understand.”
“I—”
“You don’t need the pills to make you feel better. They just manipulate your feelings from the inside. Find what makes you happy. Stay with Gene and Alby. They’ll keep you safe because I can’t anymore.”
“Mallius…” No use. The raven-esque man was already fading away into the darkness. “Mallius, please… I love you!”
“I love you, too, Vaxas. It’s okay. I’ll be in your dreams.”
