"Steadily emerging with grace..."
She watched him with steady eyes, her icy gaze locked upon his face. She felt she could almost see the thoughts swarming through his mind as he began to question the possibilities. She remembered her past in that moment, remembering doing the same when she'd reached her first town after her parents had died, how nervous she'd been being a fourteen-year-old girl all alone in need of supplies for her journey. What if someone calls the police on me? What if they ask for my family? What if I have to run and they see me transform? In the end, she'd worried about nothing as she'd gone to all the right places where the people behind the counter were kind but didn't pry into your business. While worrying did keep you cautious, if you let it fester as he was, it will begin to consume you until you can't even move when it's most important. Kathrine set her glass down on the counter beside her and stared straight into the alpha's eyes as she countered his questions with, "What if somehow we all work out our differences and become the best of friends any creatures like us have ever seen? Not in a million years right?"
She knew that telling him to be calm would only make things worse so instead, she tried to make him think,
"If we stay, we are at risk and if we leave we leave these people to suffer alone. One of us will probably get hurt. For someone like us, it's inevitable; it's just in our nature. Occupational hazard. However, you cannot blame yourself because someone got hurt. You'll just drive yourself insane doing that." She felt like deep down, perhaps in some dream of another life she'd had that she knew what that felt like and it wasn't good as she's never been an alpha here. Never been in a pack this long either that hadn't stabbed her in the back by now. Kathrine straightened herself up from her leaning position and finished by saying, "We can take as many safety measures as we can and we will of course, but there will come a time when there's a choice between being safe and the life of another. That's just how fate like to make the world spin...so we'll just have to adhere to that..."
She trailed off before turning to look down at her glass and face away from him. She spoke again without turning back to him, "There are just somethings that we cannot control, but that doesn't mean we should stop trying to save others...I believe we made the right choice by coming here...and as long as we keep everyone close and at full strength, I believe we will be fine. I don't know that for sure just as you don't...but I have faith at least." Her voice had softened and it was even a slight bit warmer than her normal, icy tone, but it was also sad as if recalling some distant sorrow-filled memory. She was, which was why she'd turned away so that she could build her icy wall of defense up again in her expression before anyone could see it. No one was allowed to see that and so one the ice had returned, she glanced back again.
