Alaska tried to block them out with all of her powers. She squinted her eyes, covered her ears, yelled at them to leave her alone. Nothing seemed to quiet the voices in her head. She'd always been able to hear them, from when she was a little girl. Nobody else could. Her parents thought she was crazy as a child, as she spent her leisure time conversation with the quaint voices. They had been her friends, her protectors, her allies at the time- but now they were starting to become a nuisance. They always moaned and shrieked and yelled at the worst times- usually the rare times when Alaska actually had the courage to talk to another human being- and it was getting on her nerves. Over the pest few days they'd been a nuisance non the less. They would not shut up, and she hated it. She believed she was going crazy. maybe she was just imagining it all. No. It was too real. Alaska tried to take her mind off of the silent shrieks and wails inside her mind as she ascended a long set of old, rusty stairs leading to a rooftop overlooking a beautiful, bright, lively city. Maybe all she needed was some fresh air. The stairs creaked under her weight with each step, and the lights flickered- it gave her the chills. She didn't like it, so she picked up the pace, nearly tripping on a step in her haste. She finally reached the rooftop, looking up to see a black sky, polluted and starless. She sighed with content as a slight, chilly breeze hit her face and she shivered slightly. She walked over to the rooftop edge slowly and leaned on the fence that separated her and a 10-story death drop. She looked to her right and almost jumped in surprise- another girl stood next to her, seeming to enjoy the view as well. She stared for a second, and then remembered her manners. She met the girl's eyes and smiled shyly. "Uh, Hello." she said in a timid but friendly tone.
