ashton had an ordinary prince's upbringing in the castle, doing as instructed and learning about how a royal was to behave. it bored him to death and when he was younger he often used to imagine life as a runaway, but came to accept his responsibilities as he got older. a wild card, ashton is unpredictable and often acts on impulse, sometimes somewhat dangerously. he has a temper that flares up very quickly and can be frightening, but fortunately it usually cools as quickly as it heats. a firm believer in the saying 'every man for himself', ashton lacks a caring streak and has no time whatsoever for weakness or stupidity; he also appears to lack the ability to be sympathetic and does not empathise.

♔ The First Night ♔

That most awaited night has arrived; the first night of the Masquerade in Dypressia. It is time for the arrival of the guests, and those of the host kingdom are waiting in the ball rooms as patiently as possible while royalty and nobility from the three other kingdoms arrives in all their splendor. It will be a long night, and long tables of food and drink are set out, along with a large band to play music as long as people are there to dance.

For certain, tonight is a long-awaited night, full of promise and potential.

Alexander stood to the side of the ballroom, already holding a drink. He was incredibly excited, just as he was every year on the first night of the masquerade. Already dressed in his mask and a fine dark red jacket embroidered with gold thread, his black leather boots tapped at the marble tiles with the polished toes that shone in the low candlelight. Oh I wish they'd get here already so we can begin, he thought looking around the room at the same old Dypressian court. He was excited to see old faces and new, from each of the courts. There was a clattering sound outside the doors that he assumed was the arrival of carriages.

Isabella sighed as the gilded carriage that bore her and her family pulled into the grounds of the palace in Dypressia. Fiddling with the hem of the bodice of her dress, she had to admit that she was nervous for the night. I've got a lovely gown, and I should have a good time tonight, she told herself, trying to convince herself that things would go alright. There was a bump and a lurch and her mother called out something to the driver as they pulled to a stop. She stepped out and looked up at the palace in the low twilight, a sight she had seen a thousand times that made her smile every time.

Catherine exited her carriage preceded by her mother and father, who immediately wanted to talk business with their Dypressian trade partners. As always, Catherine first smoothed her ornately embroidered dress, then took a deep breath and moved into the palace through the big double doors after her parents, who sped into the ball room to speak. "Oh, no drinks yet thank you," she said to a servant who offered her a flute of champagne as she stepped into the ball room. For now she wanted to take in the the sights and sounds of the night, before the crowds came and covered up the pretty little details of the room.

Chance waited at the palace with the rest of the servants, waiting for the nobility and royalty to arrive in their own carriages. Each wore a simple mask and their nicest clothes; while the aim of the night was for no one to be known as themselves, the servants were to be identifiable to those who would need their service. They must have been held up somehow, he thought, biting his lip a little, a nervous habit. There was one lady in particular whom he worried about, Shiloh. She was particularly kind to him, though he was naught but a simple servant, even though he was a body servant to royalty.

Will was trying his best to be calm, but this would be the first time he went to the ball as an adult. He shot his brother a betrayed look as the older man chuckled at his enthusiasm, barely holding back a pout. Straightening his mask for the fifth time in as many minutes, William shifted in his seat as the carriage pulled to a stop in front of the Dypressian palace. He ignored the disapproving looks his parents were shooting him, turning to his older brother. "Who exactly will be here again, Seraph?" He asked, as he did every year, not finding it of terrible importance to memorize the names of the other nobility and royalty. 'I really don't see a point, if I forget a name, Seraph will assist me.'

Giving Will a small smile, Seraph calmly explained who would be attending the ball this year. "Royals and nobility from each of the kingdoms, as well as some commoners." He murmured, looking out of the window at the palace. "The most important ones to remember are Prince Halt O'Carrick of Dypressia, Princess Isabella Crawford of Mongolath, Princess Tauriel Elleth of Alistair, and Prince Ashton Caldwell of Alistair. Try not to mix them up or insult them, baby brother. " He teased lightly, gaining an annoyed look from his brother and a frown from his father. Giving his mask a small adjustment to hide his mirth, Seraph glanced at his brother with fondness. "You really should have memorized this by now."

Taking a calming breath, Cara smoothed her simple gown as she waited with the other servants. She had been sent ahead to Dypressia by Prince Seraph several days ago, as she couldn't travel with the royal family and had no way of getting here otherwise. 'It was so kind of His Highness to help me like this...' Smiling gently, she glanced around at the other servants through her mask as she waited for the carriages to arrive. 'I wonder where they are...'

Alexander watched two trades barons that he knew were from Cyrpe bustle in and begin conversations with other known trade barons, their daughter trailing after them slowly. He was certain that the girl was very different from the both of them, not only by the way she moved but by the way she acted. She's more docile and gentle than them, a simpleton could see that, he thought to himself, watching the crowds begin to pour in as he sipped at his cup of wine.

Isabella jumped as she heard more carriage wheels clatter behind her, and hurried up the steps, as quickly as she dared. She had caught a glimpse of the oncoming carriage and knew who it belonged to; the princes from Cyrpe. She found Seraph repulsive, while William was tolerable. I'd rather hold conversation with a fish, she thought as she lingered to watch the carriage roll in. This was a dangerous move, as she hoped neither of the princes would think that she was interested in either of them and that she was waiting for one of them.

Catherine noticed one man watching her observance of the room, but chose to ignore it and instead focus on the beautiful room around them. The high vaulted ceilings painted with fantastical scenes, banners woven with every family crest from the noble families of Dypressia and crystal platters and bowls holding food and drink for the night. There was more rattling outside, and she went to the door to peek out to see who was arriving, seeing the standards of her home kingdom flapping on the nearing carriage.

"You're waiting for someone important, aren't you?" Chance said to the pretty blonde girl closest to him. He looked down at the ground for a split second, trying to discard his nervousness and worry for a few moments. "I can tell. You're watching carefully, and you don't notice it, but you're straining your neck to see." He paused, hoping that she wouldn't find his deduction offensive. "I'm Chance by the way, I think it's safe to tell you my name since I'm only a servant," he said in a low voice, hoping no one else would hear.
