I was shocked, but concealed it.
"Is there anything I can do to help?" I asked calmly. "Or do you just need some time?" I instinctively placed my hand on her shoulder, something I did for my grandmother often. I felt a pang in my heart when I thought about grandmother, but focused on the girl. There's no need to dwell on the past. There is nothing you can do to change it, I told myself before smiling politely at the girl.
