Casey sat on the deteriorating stone steps of an apartment building, holding their head in their hands. One last sob escaped them before they could stop it, but after that they clamped their mouth shut. That's the last time I'll cry, Casey promised. He had a decent reason to cry like a kid, though. Mom and friends were dead. There wasn't a person to been seen for almost three days, but it seemed like weeks to Casey. The only belongings they had was a backpack full of food and antibiotics they were able to scavenge from some stores that were barely touched. Only preservable food, stuff that would last long. Even if it did last long, however, it wasn't going to last them forever. If Casey planned to go on in life, they needed to leave their neighborhood.
With a heave, Casey stood and rubbed the last of the tears out of their eyes. They were sure their eyes were stark red from the tears, and that was a little embarrassing. They were doubtful that they would see anyone soon, though. It took a moment for their legs to stop wobbling, and another moment that before they could step forward. Casey turned to their left, and started on their journey. They had no clue where their destination was, but, who cared? For now, all Casey needed was a reason to go on. For now, it was to live. They wanted to live, so they needed to stop grieving and move on.
