hello, you may not remember, but we know each other. How? Well, I'm you. But I'm also not you. Its hard to explain. I'm a separate being inside yourself, who has separate opinions, likes, and desires. But I'm also you. We are the same, yet we are opposite. But don't think about it too much, otherwise I may just take over you, or us.
the Doppelgängers:
You have an alternate self who you become when you sleep, or when you become "unstable". The doppelgänger is ten times stronger than a normal human, and each one has a unique power only they can use. The doppelgänger can be in any shape or form, but when the true owner of the body awakens it will go back to normal and usually the host body will not remember anything that happened. Usually they will have completely different personality traits or major things about them that are different, although this is not always the case. The doppelgänger can be any age since it moves host body's every time the host dies. Although they try not to do this often and try to keep their host alive otherwise it will take longer to transfer plus any pain inflicted on the host will also effect the doppelgänger. Also, the reason the host must be more advanced than the norm is if it were a normal human they would almost immediately die, because their soul isn't strong enough. When a doppelgänger is at its original state, it is somewhat like a spirit or a wandering soul. Since that is all they are made up of, to creat a physical body takes incredible energy, that some don't even have. This energy is taken directly from the soul, since it's all there is, therefore, if a doppelgänger stays transformed in a complex physical body for too long, it will die. The soul does not regenerate on its own, therefore the solution to energy loss is to take from another source, aka, taking possession of another living thing. When they take possession of the host, their soul automatically starts to take from the hosts life source and soul in order to replenish itself, this is something that the Doppelgängers cannot control. They can appear as any age, but the form that costs the least amount of energy is their current age. they'd can transform into literally anything that has a life force, but some forms cost less energy and can be kept for longer periods of time, for example; a human form costs the most energy, the younger you make it the more it costs. The most common form they take is of an animal, which costs medium to low energy. They can speak any tongue therefore it doesn't matter what form they take. Since they share the same body they will either make it so their presence in the body is never detected or make peace with the owner. Not all Doppelgängers are good, not all are bad.

people who have such a being within them are not of normal human standards themselves. There is something that pulls them above the rest, be it a physical power like being unusually fast, or a mental ability like being able to calculate and strategize at unusually high rates. Another thing they all have in common is that they all have a theoretical hole in their heart, meaning that they are missing something, like the ability to see things from another point of view or something in their life has left them broken emotionally. This "hole in themselves" seems to be trying to be filled by this extra ability, but it causes stress on the person. Because they have some higher ability the doppelgänger is able to share a body, because a normal human wouldn't be able to handle the mental and physical stress. The abilities they come to posses rant things they were born with, they discovered them after having severe physical, mental, or situational damage. What they are missing is a valuable piece of what defines someone as a healthy human or just a human in general, therefore the ability they gain from this loss coincides with the loss itself, so they are connected. The abilities they gain aren't things like they can shoot lasers or that they can fly, the abilities are always things that are possible for a human to accomplish, though not many can because they are lacking the requirements but could attain them. The abilities are more like enhancements to either their physical or mental capabilities. An example; a person could lift an elephant if they trained hard enough, but a person could not stop a meteor even if they trained.

HOW THEY POSSESS A HUMAN
So it's basically they shake hands. That's it xD. The Doppelgänger enters the body through the nerves and blood by the fingertips, and let their spirit get caught up in the flow of the blood stream and energy flow which naturally without them needing to do anything since it flows so quickly will pull them in. Then they reside themselves inside either the brain or the heart, if they reside in the brain they can assert more control over when the wake up as well as they can control memories. Its a more natural way to reside for them to be in the heart but most of the time it's quite full with the other persons soul. The closer to the soul the stay, the quicker the soul will degrade and be eaten basically. Automatically as soon as they reach for the hand shake and make contact they take control, meaning the original Soul basically blacks out thereby they have no memory of the situation, like a reset button.
Switching
Well, mostly it's the Doppelgängers who control the switching, but humans can learn to control it too. It takes A LOT of will power though. Sometimes you'll find yourself switch involuntarily, and that can happen either because the one who isn't in control wants to be and is forcing it, or the one who is in control has their mind become unstable and their emotions go haywire

a field and sky with no colour or sound, but a light wind that is visibly moving the plants and clouds, but you cannot feel this wind. Everything is black and white but the Doppelgängers within the space.

An empty room except for a chair or two, you can see outside to the field^^ from before, though this time you can see colour, and you hear the faint chirping of a bird as well as a slight breeze, you see nor hear nor feel anything else.
Since it's already a thing that some Doppelgängers have stronger souls and abilities than others we can say that the strength of the soul also determines powerful they are. and that level difference results in that some Doppelgängers can't transform into humans when they are without a host even at full power, And so, the can only change little thing like eyes and voice. How's that? I actually thought all this through when I first created it, I just never found the time to write EVERYTHING I came up with down. If we're going to say that there's a level difference, then there is also a status difference too, like a pyramid. Tyand for example, is a higher level Doppelgänger so he easily can live without a host for up to a week, and can easily transform into whatever he pleases. Trent is a mid level, so he can only last for anywhere up to 4 days without one, and he can transform into a human but only at the age he currently is at and not for great lengths of time. So that would mean Olivia is a lower level Doppelgänger, who can only last about 1-2 days without a host, and cannot transform into a human under almost any circumstance unless she has a "power up" per say.
Now, the plot for the mother I have some ideas around:
-She dislikes the lower levels and she doesn't expect much from them, so she wishes the exterminate them
-She holds a personal grudge with Olivia or a family member directly related to her
-something that involves the human hosts
