Cora reached her building and rode the elevator quietly to the fifth floor where she then retreated to her apartment. Her roommate was not home, nor was her roommate's German Shepard, Brutus, who she had been hoping would be there to make her feel safe, but she felt a little better as, with a jingle of his collar, her little Corgi, Dex came trotting out of her room to greet her. She stooped to give him a big hug, then rose again, tossing her purse on the couch and heading to her room to kick her shoes off.

I think if you spoke to the waitress she'd be happy to find you your own table. It's not very crowded." His voice was reedy and odd, almost like it belonged to a different body.
